How Corporate Bitcoin Buying Affects Bitcoin’s Price and Volatility

Corporate bitcoin buying can affect demand, but the price and volatility effects depend on execution, market depth and expectations. Evidence does not support a simple universal rule.

Corporate bitcoin buying adds demand when orders are executed, but the available evidence does not show that it reliably pushes bitcoin higher or makes bitcoin more volatile. The effect depends on the order’s size, timing, execution, market depth and what investors already expect. A purchase announcement is news about buying—not the purchase itself—and its price impact can differ from the effect of the trades.

Does corporate bitcoin buying move the market?

It can, particularly if a large order reaches a market with limited liquidity. Buying means competing for bitcoin offered for sale; depending on how much is available and how quickly the buyer acts, the orders can move the price while they are being filled. The eventual impact depends on factors including the order’s size relative to market activity, the pace and method of execution, and other buying or selling at the same time.

But a company’s public announcement is not a direct measure of the trades’ impact. Investors may anticipate a recurring buyer, and the price may move before the company confirms a purchase. If the announcement contains little that is new, the market may react modestly—or move in the opposite direction—without showing that the underlying purchases had no effect.

It helps to keep four different things separate: executed orders, announcements about purchases, the value of a company’s bitcoin holdings, and the company’s share-price volatility. Evidence about one does not automatically establish what happened to the others.

What did the Strategy announcement study find?

A Bitwise Europe analysis examined 100 Strategy purchase announcements from August 2020 through March 2026, using Bloomberg bitcoin data to chart price performance around the announcements. Its sample showed a short-term peak before disclosure, followed by a small average decline and partial recovery. That pattern is consistent with some buying expectations being reflected in price before the news is public, but it does not prove that anticipation caused the pattern.

Bitwise Europe event group Reported indexed bitcoin performance What the result describes
All 100 announcements 100.28 two hours before; 99.97 at 30 minutes after; 99.96 at 60 minutes after The average event path peaked before announcement and was lower shortly afterward.
Largest 10% of purchase tranches, by BTC volume 99.14 at two hours after announcement The sharpest reported post-announcement decline among the size groups described.
Smallest 10% of purchase tranches, by BTC volume 100.51 at two hours after announcement A different path from the largest tranches; the indexed measure was higher at that point.

These are Bitwise Europe’s sample-specific indexed results, not a forecast or a causal estimate of how much a purchase moves bitcoin. In its summary, Bitwise said: “Bitcoin tends to underperform in the two hours following an announcement, not outperform.” That describes the study’s 100-event sample, not a rule for every announcement. The analysis is observational: other market news, event selection, disclosure timing and prior expectations may also help explain the price path.

Does corporate buying make bitcoin more volatile?

The reviewed evidence does not establish a general causal link between corporate buying and higher bitcoin volatility. The announcement study measures a short-term price path around Strategy disclosures; it does not isolate the effect of executed purchase orders on market-wide volatility.

A separate 2025 working paper by Aufiero, Briola, Salarin, Caccioli, Bartolucci and Aste examined 39 publicly listed bitcoin-holding firms, with data through April 2025. It reports an average bitcoin beta of 0.62 across the firms and finds 12 with a beta above 1. Beta describes how a firm’s returns moved in relation to bitcoin returns in the model; it is not a measure of bitcoin volatility and does not mean that corporate buying multiplies bitcoin’s volatility.

For Strategy over April 2023–April 2025, the paper estimates a bitcoin beta of 1.37 and an R-squared of 0.44 in its single-factor model. The authors’ transfer-entropy analysis finds bitcoin was generally the stronger information driver, with brief feedback from company shares to bitcoin around major financial events. These are model results about co-movement and information flow, not proof that a company’s purchases caused bitcoin-price movements.

Why can a treasury company’s shares move differently from bitcoin?

A listed company that holds bitcoin gives investors exposure to both the asset and the company. Its share price can reflect expectations about future purchases, financing, business operations and other company-specific factors as well as the market value of its holdings. Its shares may therefore move more sharply than bitcoin without bitcoin itself becoming more volatile as a result.

Fidelity Digital Assets’ 2024 report recounts the start of this corporate-treasury trend: MicroStrategy’s initial purchase in August 2020 was 21,454 bitcoin for $250 million. Strategy—the company formerly known as MicroStrategy—is a prominent example, but it is not a stand-in for every corporate holder. A 2025 scholarly article by Jan Kunikowski argues that aggressive acquisition exposes the firm to significant financial risk and could pose broader market risk if selling pressure emerges. That is a conditional risk assessment, not a measured estimate of price impact.

How do financing, liquidity and selling risk matter?

Strategy’s 2025 Form 10-K says its reserve policy treats bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset, subject to market conditions and anticipated business cash needs. The company describes using capital-market financing, including equity and preferred securities, among other mechanisms, to buy bitcoin. Its filing reports approximately 717,131 bitcoin held as of February 13, 2026, acquired at an aggregate purchase price of $54.5 billion. These are company-reported figures for that date, not a current holdings count.

Strategy’s filing says bitcoin markets have historically had significant price volatility and less liquidity and trading volume than sovereign-currency markets. Its March 2026 quarterly filing also warns that it might not be able to sell bitcoin at its reported market value—or at all. These disclosures make the scale and timing of purchases, and the possibility of selling during financial stress, relevant to market-risk analysis. They identify risks the company recognizes; they do not demonstrate that a particular purchase or sale has already caused a market-wide price or volatility effect.

What can investors reasonably conclude?

  • Executed corporate purchases are real demand, but their immediate price impact varies with order size, execution and market conditions.
  • Announcements can be anticipated or partly reflected in prices before disclosure. The Bitwise Europe study found a pre-announcement peak in its Strategy sample, not a universal post-announcement sell-off.
  • Public-company shares can be more sensitive to bitcoin returns than bitcoin itself. A higher equity beta is not evidence that corporate buying increases bitcoin volatility.
  • Large holdings, financing choices and the prospect of selling under stress create potential feedback channels. The sources reviewed do not provide a general causal estimate of their effect on bitcoin’s price or volatility.
