Contract-first engineering makes an interface definition an early, shared artifact that producers and consumers can review before they depend on one another. In distributed core banking, it helps teams make operations, messages, data formats, and expected behavior explicit across both synchronous service calls and asynchronous events. A specification does not, by itself, ensure that implementations conform, that systems interoperate, or that a bank meets its reliability requirements; those outcomes also depend on governance, testing, deployment, security, and operational controls.
What contract-first engineering means in core banking
In a contract-first workflow, teams agree on the shape and meaning of an interface before building or changing the systems that use it. A contract is a machine-readable description of what a service accepts and returns, or what an event channel carries, along with relevant rules for expected behavior. It gives producers and consumers a common artifact to review, validate, publish, and test against.

For HTTP request-and-response interfaces, OpenAPI is a familiar specification family. For asynchronous interfaces, AsyncAPI describes channels, messages, and related interface details. The AsyncAPI Initiative presents its specification and tooling as platform- and language-agnostic; it is a modeling layer, not a message broker. Its tools support common brokers such as Kafka and RabbitMQ and languages including Python, Java, and Node.js. Those capabilities do not make any particular technology choice mandatory.

A request to perform an operation and a notification that business state has changed are different interactions. They have different timing, failure, and ownership implications, so modeling them as if they were interchangeable can leave important behavior implicit.

| Interaction style | What the contract describes | Questions teams need to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Synchronous service call | An operation, its inputs and outputs, and the expected response behavior. | What constitutes success or failure? What response time is expected? How should a caller handle a timeout or retry? |
| Asynchronous event exchange | A channel, message format, event meaning, and the conditions under which it is emitted and consumed. | Can delivery be delayed, repeated, or reordered? How does a consumer recognize and safely handle an event it has seen before? |
These are complementary patterns, not competing standards. A synchronous call can request a business operation, while an event can tell interested consumers that a state change occurred. Choosing between them—or combining them—depends on the business capability, required response behavior, and operational context.
How to make a contract meaningful to banking teams
Schema fields alone do not settle the business rules behind an integration. BIAN’s Semantic API Practitioner Guide V8.1 (2020) offers banking-specific guidance for thinking about service domains and event-driven design. It describes BIAN as a conceptual business component framework and leaves implementation choices to solution design; it does not mechanically prescribe a bank’s architecture.

Agree on vocabulary and ownership
Define exchanged terms at the precision consumers need, and identify which service domain owns the relevant business concept and its state transitions. A change in the meaning of a value can trigger different behavior even when the field name and data type remain unchanged. Teams should therefore review semantic changes, not only schema changes.

Describe state, triggers, and policies
For event-driven behavior, specify which state changes matter, what triggers an event, and which thresholds or policies affect that decision. Make operational agreements visible as well, including performance expectations, information integrity, and security controls. The exact policies will vary by bank and use case; the contract should make applicable expectations reviewable rather than leaving them to assumptions between teams.

Define safe behavior under delay and concurrency
Distributed systems can deliver messages late or more than once, and concurrent work can complete in a different order from the order in which events began. BIAN’s 2020 guide states: “The Service Domains must handle duplicate exchanges and tolerate that any business event may result in parallel threads of activity that can complete in different relative sequences based on prevailing physical conditions.”
Translate that principle into explicit consumer behavior: which operations must be idempotent, which updates can be combined safely, how duplicate messages are recognized, and what happens when an event arrives after a later state change. Also define defensive handling for delayed or erroneous requests. A message schema cannot answer these questions on its own.

Include operational support in the design
BIAN’s guide also identifies concerns such as service discovery, messaging, transaction logging, state and trigger handling, and assurance utilities. These are part of the operating environment for an integration, not details that a specification file automatically supplies. Assign responsibility for the relevant controls and decide how teams will observe and investigate failures.

A practical contract-first workflow
- Set the business boundary. Identify the business capability, information responsibility, producer, and intended consumers. Use service-domain concepts to clarify ownership without treating a conceptual model as a deployment blueprint.
- Choose the interaction model. Define an operation contract for a request/response interaction, an event contract for asynchronous exchange, or both where the business flow needs both forms.
- Write semantics and behavior into the contract. Describe formats and operations, then document event meaning, triggers, security and integrity expectations, and relevant failure behavior. Make retry, duplicate, delay, ordering, and idempotency expectations explicit where they apply.
- Version and review changes with consumers. Treat the contract as a shared interface: review proposed changes with producers and affected consumers, and establish compatibility rules before releasing changes.
- Validate in continuous integration. Check the specification and run compatibility or contract checks as part of the build. Generated code can reduce repetitive interface work, but generated artifacts still need integration checks and governance.
- Publish accessible documentation and test real behavior. Make approved contracts easy for teams to find, then test representative consumer interactions, including relevant failure cases. Specification validation alone cannot show that every deployed participant behaves as described.
What an implementation example can—and cannot—show
TransferGo’s company-reported account of adopting AsyncAPI describes generating AsyncAPI schemas from DTOs, adding validation pipelines and schema scoring as service and channel counts grew, and providing a central developer portal. It also describes end-to-end contract tests against real message consumers using Microcks and LocalStack in Jenkins CI. This is an example of one fintech organization’s workflow, not an independent performance study or a universal recipe; another bank may have different infrastructure, governance, and integration constraints.

How to interpret core-banking architecture targets
Amazon Web Services publishes a reference guidance for building a modern core banking system on its cloud services. Its design discusses independently scaling microservices, event-driven architecture, API ingress, monitoring and auditing, security controls, and multi-availability-zone reliability. It is an AWS-specific reference architecture, not a neutral standard or proof that the same design suits every bank.
The guidance describes an example targeting a response of about 200 ms for real-time transactions written to the database, with the response returned through direct connectivity to the bank’s data center and by minimizing hops to the ledger database. The page does not state a year for this figure. Treat it as a scoped target in that AWS example—not as an industry benchmark or a universal service-level objective. A contract can make a chosen latency expectation visible, but meeting it depends on the whole implementation and operating environment.
Quick Recap
What a contract-first approach does not replace
- Conformance in production: Teams still need implementation checks and runtime oversight; a valid specification does not prove deployed services follow it.
- Business correctness: A structurally valid message can still carry the wrong meaning or reflect an incorrect state transition.
- Interoperability: Shared formats help, but producers and consumers must also agree on semantics, versions, security, and failure handling.
- Banking-grade reliability: Reliability depends on architecture, deployment, recovery, security, monitoring, and operational practices in addition to interface design.
