What “browser-native VB6 IDE” means
In this context, “browser-native” means the development environment is built to run through a web browser. VB6 Studio Web’s repository describes an implementation made with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, including a source compiler/runtime and browser control implementations. These are different approaches, not interchangeable versions of one product. A browser IDE may suit experimentation or web-oriented output; a VB6/VBA compatibility project may be more relevant when your priority is a newer development path for existing code. Neither description, by itself, certifies that a particular legacy application will work.

How to decide whether a browser IDE fits your project
Before moving code or choosing a tool, identify what “compatible” needs to mean for your work:
- Language: Does the environment support the syntax and behavior your source uses?
- Project files: Can it open, preserve, or export the project structure you need?
- Controls and APIs: Are the specific controls and calls in your project implemented, rather than merely represented by familiar names?
- COM/OCX and binaries: Does your application depend on installed Windows components or native compiled behavior? Browser emulation and native execution are not the same.
- Deployment: Is browser access or HTML export suitable, or do you need a Windows-native build and runtime?
- Local data and persistence: Check how the environment handles local files, clipboard access, browser storage, and backups.
For an existing application, test a representative project and its essential dependencies before committing. Confirm the exact controls and integrations it needs, then verify that the result runs in the intended deployment environment. A small syntax demo is not enough to establish compatibility with a full VB6 application.

Microsoft’s support policy: IDE and runtime are different
Microsoft says VB6 development is no longer supported and the VB6 IDE has been unsupported since April 8, 2008. Its current policy lists the IDE as not supported on Windows 11, while specified VB6 runtime files remain supported on supported Windows versions. That runtime support is limited to the lifetime of those Windows versions and to serious regressions and critical security issues for existing applications; it is not support for creating or maintaining software with the old IDE. Microsoft’s VB6 support statement and support announcement explain the distinction.

The runtime files remain 32-bit. Microsoft says VB6 applications and runtime components are supported only in the WOW emulation environment on 64-bit Windows; the 32-bit IDE is not supported on 64-bit Windows. Microsoft summarizes its compatibility aim this way: “Microsoft’s goal is ‘It Just Works’ compatibility for pre-existing Visual Basic 6.0 applications on supported Windows versions.” That statement concerns existing applications on supported Windows versions, not ongoing IDE development support.

Which option should you choose?
- For a browser-based VB6-style environment: Consider VB6 Studio Web or WebVB Studio, while treating compatibility as specific to each implementation and project.
- For a modern VB6/VBA-oriented development path: Evaluate twinBASIC against your needs, bearing in mind its documentation describes a beta compiler and IDE rather than a browser tool.
- For an existing VB6 application: Separate the need to run it from the need to edit or rebuild it. Microsoft’s runtime policy addresses supported Windows runtime files, not continued support for the VB6 IDE.
