The Component Object Model (COM) is Microsoft’s binary standard for software components to expose functionality through interfaces and work with other components. It is an object model and set of requirements—not a programming language. Microsoft describes COM as “a platform-independent, distributed, object-oriented system for creating binary software components that can interact” (Microsoft Learn: The Component Object Model).
How COM components work together
A COM component makes functionality available through one or more interfaces. An interface defines a contract: a group of methods a client can call. The component provides the code that implements those methods, while the client uses an interface pointer to call them rather than accessing the object’s internal data directly.

Because COM specifies how compiled components present and call functionality at the binary level, components written in different languages can interoperate when they meet COM’s interface and calling requirements and have suitable runtime or interoperability support. COM does not require a particular language, internal structure, or overall application architecture (Microsoft Learn: Interfaces).
What IUnknown does
IUnknown is the base interface mechanism used by COM. Its methods support discovering an object’s interfaces and managing the object’s lifetime:

QueryInterface: Requests a pointer to another interface the object supports.AddRefandRelease: Adjust the object’s reference count to help manage its lifetime. This convention must be used correctly; reference counting does not by itself prevent every lifetime error.
These methods are part of the COM interface fundamentals described by Microsoft Learn’s IUnknown interface documentation.
Where COM calls can happen
COM supports interaction between objects in the same process and across process or computer boundaries. Marshaling adapts interface calls and data for boundaries such as process or network communication. This flexibility does not mean every COM call is remote: many happen within one process, and remote use is not automatically configured simply because an object uses COM (Microsoft Learn: Marshaling Details).

COM classes, objects, and CLSIDs
A COM class is an implementation that can provide one or more interfaces; a COM object is an instance created from that implementation. A component commonly refers to the binary unit that creates COM objects. On Windows, a class is identified by a CLSID (class identifier), a unique 128-bit GUID. COM registration maps that identifier to information about where the class’s server implementation can be found (Microsoft Learn: CLSID Key).

- Programming language: COM is a binary component standard, not a language. Developers can implement components in different languages if they meet COM requirements and have suitable interoperability support.
- C++ class: A C++ class is a language-level type. A COM interface is a callable contract, and a COM class is an implementation that supplies one or more such interfaces.
- OLE and ActiveX: These are technologies built on COM, not alternative names for COM itself.
Microsoft’s COM overview describes the relationship between COM and technologies built on it (Microsoft Learn: The Component Object Model).
