Adaptive VSync: What the NVIDIA Setting Changes in Games

Adaptive VSync is a conditional NVIDIA driver setting—not the same thing as display-based VRR. Here’s how the terms differ and what to check for compatibility.

Adaptive VSync usually means NVIDIA’s graphics-driver setting that changes conventional VSync behavior according to whether a game is rendering above or below the display’s refresh-rate cap. It is not the same as VESA Adaptive-Sync or other variable refresh rate (VRR) technologies, which let a compatible display adjust its refresh timing to follow the source.

What NVIDIA Adaptive VSync does

Conventional VSync coordinates frame presentation with a display’s fixed refresh cycle. When a game’s frame rate falls below that rate, VSync can contribute to stuttering; when frame delivery exceeds the display rate, turning VSync off can allow visible tearing. NVIDIA describes Adaptive VSync as a conditional policy intended to address that trade-off.

In NVIDIA’s control-panel reference, Adaptive turns V-Sync on only when the frame rate is faster than the refresh rate. In practical terms, it releases the VSync lock when performance drops below the display’s refresh-rate cap and applies VSync when performance is above it. This can reduce the forced VSync lock during slower scenes while limiting tearing when the game is rendering faster than the display can refresh.

Adaptive VSync vs. Adaptive-Sync, VRR and FreeSync

The names are similar, but the features operate at different levels. Adaptive VSync is a GPU-driver policy; Adaptive-Sync and VRR describe display timing that can vary to match frame delivery. FreeSync is AMD’s branded technology, which uses standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate.

VESA Adaptive-Sync Display interface and compatible display Enables variable refresh rate over DisplayPort and Embedded DisplayPort, so the display update rate can follow content. VESA standard; see VESA’s explanation of Adaptive-Sync.
AMD FreeSync Compatible graphics hardware, software and display Delivers dynamic refresh rates using supported display technologies. AMD technology using standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI VRR; AMD’s FreeSync page notes that VESA AdaptiveSync certification does not necessarily mean AMD FreeSync certification.

VESA’s May 16, 2023 announcement describes its Adaptive-Sync Display Compliance Test Specification as an open standard for evaluating front-of-screen VRR performance. A standards specification or certification label is useful context, but does not establish that every particular GPU, display and connection will work together.

How to check whether display-based VRR will work

If you want the display itself to vary its refresh rate, check the exact devices and connection rather than relying on a generic “Adaptive-Sync” label. AMD says FreeSync requires compatible AMD Radeon graphics and an AMD-certified display; its support information also summarizes the technology’s behavior at AMD FreeSync.

  • GPU: Confirm the exact graphics card supports the VRR technology you intend to use.
  • Monitor: Check the specific model’s supported VRR range and certification, not just the product family or marketing label.
  • Connection: Verify that the port and cable path support the relevant feature, such as DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync or HDMI VRR.
  • Settings and software: Check the monitor’s on-screen settings and the GPU driver or system settings required to enable VRR.

When choosing a monitor for display-based VRR, compare its published refresh-rate range, port support, GPU compatibility and certification with your actual setup. No single label guarantees compatibility across all hardware and connections.
