A college basketball coach’s “buyout” is not one standard fee. It is a contract term that can require a departing coach to pay the university, or require the university to pay a coach it dismisses. The trigger, calculation, timing and conditions depend on the individual agreement; a later settlement can change what either side ultimately pays.
What a coach buyout means—and who pays whom
Read “buyout” as a shorthand for a contract-defined payment tied to an early departure or termination, not as a single NCAA-wide formula. A coach’s resignation to take another job and a university’s decision to terminate the coach without cause may trigger separate clauses with different amounts and rules.

Before interpreting a reported figure, establish which party initiates the departure, whether it is for cause, and which clause the figure describes. A coach-initiated buyout is not interchangeable with a school’s obligation after a no-cause dismissal.
How contracts can calculate the payment
Coach leaves early
Missouri State’s April 2024 men’s basketball agreement with Cuonzo Martin sets a declining amount for a no-cause departure by the coach. It requires payment within 30 days after termination.
#1 Best Overall
| Departure date | Amount specified in Martin agreement |
|---|---|
| Through March 15, 2026 | $600,000 |
| March 16, 2026 through March 15, 2027 | $400,000 |
| March 16, 2027 through March 15, 2028 | $200,000 |
| March 16, 2028 through March 31, 2029 | $0 |
The agreement also lists exceptions for specified coaching changes. These include leaving collegiate coaching for at least a year, taking an assistant collegiate coaching role for at least a year, accepting a Division II or III head-coaching position, or taking a professional basketball head-coaching job. Those exceptions and amounts are terms of this particular agreement, not a general rule for coaches.
University terminates without cause
Martin’s Missouri State agreement treats a no-cause university termination differently: base salary for the contract term is guaranteed, with the payment calculated from remaining base salary and prorated for the remaining months of the contract year. The agreement gives $1,895,833.33 as an illustrative amount for a termination on April 30, 2026, payable within 15 days. That example is a contractual calculation, not evidence that the amount was paid.
Earned compensation is addressed separately in the agreement, which also specifies payroll tax treatment. A reported “buyout” therefore may not describe every amount owed, such as earned pay or achievement payments.

Termination for cause
Cause can change the result substantially. Martin’s agreement calls for written notice of the alleged cause and an opportunity for the coach to be heard. If the university terminates for just cause, the coach is not entitled to further compensation after termination, but remains entitled to compensation and achievement payments earned through that date.
Do not assume these procedures or definitions apply to another coach. The relevant contract determines what counts as cause, whether notice or an opportunity to respond or cure is required, and what happens to compensation already earned.
Why mitigation and conditions matter
Mitigation clauses can require a coach to seek other work and reduce payments by earnings elsewhere. The amount ultimately payable may depend on the jobs covered, how much effort is required, when new earnings count and how offsets are calculated.

- Clemson’s March 2024 women’s basketball term sheet requires reasonable efforts to seek other collegiate or professional basketball coaching work and reduces the buyout dollar-for-dollar by earnings during the remaining contract term. It makes severance conditional on providing an executed release.
- A reported 2026 proposal for Michael Malone describes monthly dollar-for-dollar offsets for basketball coaching compensation elsewhere, an obligation to pursue coaching work, and payment only after release of legal claims and delivery of information needed to calculate mitigation and offsets. The report says the proposal remained subject to approval and execution of a long-form agreement; it should be treated as a proposal unless an executed agreement is verified.
Approval rules can also shape contract terms. North Carolina system policy treats a waiver of damage mitigation and earnings offsets as a provision requiring special approval. That is a state-system example, not a nationwide requirement.
A contractual buyout is not the same as a settlement
A buyout clause is an agreed formula for events specified in the contract. A later settlement is a separate agreement that resolves a dispute or changes what the parties will pay or claim. The contract’s headline amount alone does not establish what was ultimately paid or whether the parties negotiated a different result.
To substantiate a final settlement figure, look for the signed agreement, amendments, settlement instrument, release and any public filing. Without direct documentation, do not report the contractual buyout as the amount paid or assume it was reduced.

Do not confuse coach contracts with athlete litigation
The NCAA’s July 26, 2024 account of House v. NCAA, Hubbard v. NCAA and Carter v. NCAA concerns athlete back-damages claims, future benefits, and roster and scholarship changes. It is a separate matter from an employment agreement between a coach and a university. A settlement in athlete litigation does not describe a coach’s buyout.
How to compare two reported buyout figures
A headline number is meaningful only when the contract terms behind it are comparable. Check these items before deciding which figure is larger in practical terms:
- Trigger and payer: Is the coach leaving, or is the university terminating the coach?
- Cause: Is the departure without cause, for cause, or governed by another defined event?
- Calculation base: Does the formula use base salary, total compensation or another defined amount?
- Term and schedule: How much time remains, and does the amount step down by date?
- Guarantee: What percentage or portion of future compensation is guaranteed?
- Mitigation and offsets: Must the coach seek work, and which earnings reduce the amount?
- Payment mechanics: When is payment due, and is it paid in installments?
- Conditions: Does payment depend on a release, disclosures or other cooperation?
- Earned amounts: How are earned bonuses, achievement payments and vested benefits treated?
- Exceptions: Do retirement, a move outside coaching or a particular new role change the obligation?
- Approvals: Were institutional approvals required and obtained?
Where to find the controlling documents
For a particular coach, the executed contract and amendments—not a generic explanation—control the calculation, alongside applicable law, approvals and any settlement documents. Public access depends on the institution and jurisdiction.

North Carolina system policy provides one example of a public-university approval framework: head-coach agreements longer than one year require board of trustees approval; agreements must address NCAA compliance and disclose their public-record status; and specified financial provisions, including certain buyout clauses and waivers of mitigation, require additional approvals. This policy is not a promise that every coach’s agreement is public or that every state uses the same rules.
When records are available, useful documents include the executed agreement, amendments, board materials and settlement records. Request them under the applicable public-records law for that institution.
