Losing access to Steam does not automatically erase installed games or every save, but it can stop you using your account-based game licenses. Recover the account first. Whether progress survives depends on the game, whether Steam Cloud is enabled and synchronized, and whether you still have the computer or a separate backup containing local saves.
What you lose—and what may still be on your computer
Your Steam library is tied to your Steam account. Copying or reinstalling Steam, or keeping game files on a drive, does not transfer licenses or restore sign-in access. Recover the account associated with the purchases to regain access to its library.

Installed game files may remain on your computer, and a separate backup may preserve compatible files. Those files are not the same as licenses or save data: having a game installed does not guarantee you can launch it through your account, and preserving the installation does not necessarily preserve progress.

How to recover a Steam account
- Go to Steam’s official account recovery page and follow the recovery flow. Try possible account login names and previous email addresses.
- If automatic recovery does not resolve the problem, use the Support intake form offered in the process. Steam says you can contact Support even if you have forgotten the account email address, password, and phone number. Provide as much information that helps establish ownership as you can.
- If you suspect someone stole the account, secure the email account and the computer before changing your Steam password. Follow Steam’s stolen or hijacked account guidance and account security recommendations: review authorized devices, use “Sign out everywhere” if you see an unfamiliar device, change passwords, and scan the computer for malware.
Use Steam’s official Help site, and do not enter credentials on suspicious pages or trust people in chat who claim to be Steam Support.

Will your Steam saves still be there?
There is no single answer for every game. Steam Cloud is optional, and developers decide whether and how their games use it. Check a game’s Steam Store page for its Cloud indicator; for details about which data is synchronized, consult the developer or the game’s community. A Cloud indicator does not mean a particular save has successfully synced.
If you still have the old computer
It may contain a newer save that never reached Steam Cloud. Connect it to the internet and give Steam a chance to synchronize before playing on another device or choosing a version during a conflict. Avoid overwriting the newer local progress with an older cloud copy.

If the save was local-only
Some games save progress only on the computer. If that machine is gone and the save was not synchronized or separately backed up, Steam says the save cannot be recovered. Save-file locations vary by game, so consult the game’s documentation or developer for its specific location.
Where Steam keeps local Cloud copies
Steam stores local copies of Cloud files in the userdata directory by default. If you can access the relevant computer, these locations may help you find files that were downloaded or synchronized there:

The folders are organized by Steam account ID and game app ID. Finding this directory does not restore files that were never saved there.
If Steam shows a Cloud conflict
A conflict means the local and cloud versions differ. Compare the timestamps in Steam’s conflict window and select the copy that matches your latest intended progress; do not choose blindly. Playing offline can delay synchronization and contribute to conflicts. Steam Support says it can explain how Cloud works, but “they cannot recover lost saves or assist in resolving cloud conflicts.” See the Steam Cloud FAQ.

What Steam backups include—and what they do not
Steam’s Backup feature can save and restore compatible game files, but it is not a way to recover an account or licenses. Games that use third-party installers or downloaders may not work with the tool, and Steam recommends testing backups after creating them.
For Valve-created games, Steam’s backup does not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files. Custom material must be copied separately. Save locations and backup needs for third-party games vary, so check the developer’s instructions rather than assuming a game backup contains progress.

An external hard drive or SSD can hold copies of compatible game files and local saves that you copy separately. It cannot restore account access, licenses, cloud data that was never downloaded, or saves that were never copied. Choose storage based on the amount of data you need to preserve and the connections available on your computer.

Reduce the risk of losing access or progress
- Keep your account email secure and current so it remains useful for recovery.
- Enable Steam Guard for an additional sign-in security layer. Steam describes it as making it harder for an account to fall into the wrong hands. See the Steam Guard FAQ.
- If you use the mobile authenticator, attach a confirmed phone number and store the recovery code safely. Steam says the code can help with self-recovery if you lose your phone or authenticator. Follow Steam’s mobile authenticator setup guidance.
- For important games, confirm Cloud support and synchronization, and make separate copies of local saves where the game requires it.
