Nuclear fusion has not yet supplied electricity to a public grid. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes a pathway toward a U.S. fusion pilot power plant in the mid-2030s, but that is a conditional target—not a promised date for commercial electricity. Fusion is moving from scientific demonstrations toward pilot-plant engineering; the systems needed to generate, maintain and deliver dependable power still have to be demonstrated together.
What “close to the grid” means
There is no single milestone called “fusion power.” A plasma experiment, an experiment that produces a burning plasma, a pilot plant that exports net electricity, and a commercial plant that delivers reliable power are different achievements. Success at one stage does not establish that the next is ready.

- Plasma performance: The fusion reaction reaches relevant conditions in an experimental device.
- Net electricity: An integrated facility generates more electrical power than it consumes, with power available for export.
- Pilot-plant operation: A plant demonstrates the fuel cycle, heat handling, maintenance and repeated operation needed to assess a grid-scale design.
- Commercial supply: Plants can operate reliably, meet regulatory requirements and provide electricity on a viable basis.
That distinction matters when interpreting headlines about “net energy.” Energy gain in a plasma is not the same as net electricity from a power plant: the plant’s own systems use power, and the heat and energy must be converted and delivered.
What the current timelines actually say
DOE’s U.S. pilot-plant pathway
DOE’s finalized Fusion Science and Technology Roadmap, released June 9, 2026, sets out a pathway intended to support a U.S. fusion pilot power plant in the mid-2030s. Its near-term, mid-term and long-term planning horizons span 2–3 years, 3–5 years and 5–10 years, respectively. The longest horizon is intended to support infrastructure for industry scale-up by the mid-2030s.

Those are planning horizons and a program target, not a guarantee that a plant will be built, licensed, operate successfully or supply routine commercial power by that date. DOE says the roadmap’s milestones and timelines depend on future public-private partnerships and congressional appropriations.
ITER’s experimental programme
ITER is an international experimental facility, not a power station selling electricity. DOE’s June 2026 roadmap says ITER’s first plasma is delayed until the mid-2030s and deuterium-tritium operations until the end of the 2030s. Those dates concern ITER’s experimental programme, not grid delivery. At its June 2026 Council meeting, ITER reported continuing construction and assembly, preparation for commissioning, and regulatory engagement.

What has to work before a fusion plant can export power
DOE groups the remaining work into six challenge areas. Progress is needed across them, and regulatory and non-proliferation arrangements must advance alongside technical readiness.
- Structural materials: Materials must withstand the demanding conditions inside a fusion plant, including neutron irradiation.
- Plasma-facing components: Components exposed to extreme heat—including divertors—must handle the exhaust and be maintainable or replaceable.
- Confinement systems: The system must sustain useful plasma conditions at a scale and duration relevant to an integrated plant, not merely produce a short-lived experimental result.
- Fuel cycle: Deuterium-tritium designs must handle, extract and recycle fuel, and ultimately breed enough tritium to support operation.
- Blankets: Plant systems must manage the conditions around the reaction and support the fuel-cycle and heat-management functions of the design.
- Plant engineering and integration: The equipment must work together through repeated operating and environmental cycles, with maintenance, predictable availability and an applicable operating licence.
The National Academies’ 2021 report, Bringing Fusion to the U.S. Grid, treats these as staged pilot-plant requirements rather than assuming that plasma performance alone establishes readiness. Its Phase 1b recommendation includes a target of at least 50 MWe peak electricity with Qe > 1 for at least three hours. These are report recommendations and design targets—not present-day achievements or a schedule commitment from any company. The report’s later phases also call for sustained output across environmental cycles and component maintenance.

How to judge a fusion-power announcement
When a company or government gives a date, identify the milestone behind it before comparing it with another timeline. A claim about an experimental machine should not be read as a claim that a commercial plant will supply the grid.
- Does “gain” refer to energy in the plasma, or net electrical output after the facility’s own power use?
- Is the date for an experiment, a pilot plant, or commercial operation—and is it an expected start date or a demonstrated result?
- What pulse duration and repetition are planned, and is sustained duty demonstrated?
- For a deuterium-tritium design, what evidence exists for fuel handling, recycling and breeding?
- Are component lifetime, replacement and maintenance included in the operating plan?
- Is the date attached to a funded, licensed project schedule, or to a roadmap aspiration dependent on future support?
What the roadmap can—and cannot—tell you
More than 800 researchers, engineers and industry stakeholders contributed to DOE’s 2026 roadmap, according to the department. That figure describes participation in preparing the roadmap; it is not a measure of technical progress or proof that a pilot plant will meet its target.

- True to the mission of the Real Grade line to make these larger than life characters “real”, the RG Evangelion features intricate linked parts construction to represent the relaxation and contraction of muscle fibers resulting in a very close emulation of human-joints.
- The movement of the spine and shoulder blades are linked to the armor parts and follow the movement of the arms and chest, shifting as needed to prevent parts from obstructing each other. From this, realistic humanoid crouching and running poses can be re-created for EVA Unit-00.
- DX Set features 2nd Experimental Positron Cannon as well as Type G equipment for RG Evangelion Unit-01to recreate the apperaance during Operation Yashima
- Includes parts from "Evangelion 1. 0 You are(Not) Alone" and after being upgraded, Pallet Rifle, 2 Progressive Knives, Umbilical Cable, and 6 types of hands in different expressions.
- Only product with affixed official Bluefin and Bandai Namco label has been thoroughly tested for safety and meets all North American consumer product safety regulations and entitles the purchaser to product support assistance
The roadmap frames fusion as a coordinated science, technology, infrastructure and workforce effort. It identifies work intended to move the field toward pilot-plant engineering, while making its timelines conditional on future partnerships and appropriations. The gap between that pathway and actual grid supply depends on whether the technical systems, plant integration and regulatory arrangements can be demonstrated—not simply on reaching a plasma milestone.
