Climate change is warming the Hindu Kush Himalaya, accelerating glacier loss and altering snow, snowfall and permafrost. In Nepal, faster melting can add water to rivers for a time, but shrinking glaciers hold less water for the future. The effects on supply depend on when and where water is available, and on local conditions—not glacier volume alone.
How is climate change affecting Himalayan glaciers?
The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH), which includes Nepal’s high mountains, is undergoing changes across its frozen water systems: glaciers are losing ice, snow cover is declining, snowfall patterns are becoming more erratic, and permafrost is thawing. These regional findings describe the broader mountain system; they should not be read as measurements of every Nepalese glacier or valley.

ICIMOD’s 2023 regional assessment reported that HKH glaciers lost mass 65% faster in 2011–2020 than in the preceding decade. Mass loss measures the amount of ice lost, not the area covered by glaciers. Separately, a 2026 ICIMOD assessment reported a 12% reduction in HKH glacier area between 1990 and 2020, with particularly rapid losses in the eastern and central HKH. The two figures describe different measures over different periods.

This is a regional projection, not a prediction that every Nepalese glacier will lose the same share. The outcome depends in part on future emissions and local conditions.

How does glacier melt change river flow?
More melt can mean more runoff at first
Glaciers store water as ice and release some of it as they melt. When warming increases melt, the additional runoff can temporarily raise the amount of glacier-derived water entering downstream rivers. This near-term increase is not evidence that the supply is secure: it comes from drawing down the glacier’s stored ice.
Peak water marks a turning point
As a glacier shrinks, its remaining ice reservoir becomes smaller. Eventually, the glacier reaches “peak water”—the point after which its contribution to runoff declines, even if melting continues. The timing varies by glacier and basin; the reviewed assessments do not establish a single date for Nepal’s rivers. The IPCC’s Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate explains that changing glacier runoff can affect people close to glaciers and far downstream, including users who depend on water for agriculture and drinking.

Will melting glaciers cause water shortages in Nepal?
Glacier loss can contribute to water stress, but it does not mean Nepal will simply run out of water. River supply is not the same thing as glacier volume: flow also depends on snowmelt, rainfall, seasonal timing, groundwater, basin conditions, infrastructure and demand. The reviewed sources do not give a comparable Nepal-wide breakdown of how much water comes from each source, or a single national share attributable to glacier melt.
The distinction matters at both geographic and seasonal scales. A community near a glacier may experience a different change in water availability from a downstream town, and a shift in when water arrives can matter even if annual flow does not change in the same way. The IPCC has reported decreases in drinking-water availability in rural Nepal Himalayan settings, but that evidence does not establish the same impact across the country.

ICIMOD’s 2023 assessment projects that water availability across the HKH may peak around mid-century and then decline. This is a regional projection with substantial uncertainty, not a precise forecast for Nepal as a whole or for any particular river basin.
What other risks come with glacier and permafrost change?
Warming affects more than the quantity of meltwater. ICIMOD identifies declining permafrost extent as a contributor to landslides and infrastructure problems at high elevations. Glacier-fed lakes can also pose a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) risk: a GLOF is the sudden release of water from such a lake.

Flooding, landslides, erosion and sedimentation can overlap in a catchment. Depending on the location and event, they can damage settlements, roads, hydropower facilities, irrigation systems and water infrastructure. These are regional hazard concerns, not a prediction that a specific valley will experience a particular event. Risk differs among basins and communities.

Regional HKH assessments provide important context, but they are not a substitute for observations at individual glaciers. In Nepal, ICIMOD and partners have systematically monitored the Yala and Rikha Samba glaciers since 2011. Such field observations help show how particular glaciers change; they should not be treated as a direct forecast for every glacier or as a nationwide water-supply estimate.
