Anthropic says supported Claude models use an invisible statistical watermark: a pattern in the model’s token choices that a detector can assess. It is not a string of hidden characters, and a positive result suggests Claude was involved—not that Claude was the original or sole author. A missing result does not prove a person wrote the text.
What Claude’s text watermark is
Anthropic describes the system as a version of Google DeepMind’s SynthID-Text approach, published in a 2024 Nature paper. The watermark is a statistical pattern distributed across generated text, rather than metadata embedded in a document or special characters a reader can reveal.

When generating language, a model often has several plausible next-token choices. Anthropic says its method uses keyed randomness to guide some low-stakes choices—where alternatives preserve meaning—so that a detector with the relevant key can assess whether the resulting sequence is consistent with the mark. Anthropic’s description is about the method family; it is not a complete public specification of Claude’s implementation.

What a detection result does—and does not—mean
Anthropic says its detector estimates the likelihood that Claude was involved in producing text. A positive result does not establish that Claude originated the writing, wrote all of it, or was the only tool or author involved. Claude may have edited text written by someone else, for example. The signal also cannot identify a particular user, organization, or chat.
A result without a detected Claude mark is not proof of human authorship. It cannot rule out Claude involvement, and it cannot establish whether another AI system wrote the text. Treat the result as one limited signal, not a verdict about provenance or a person’s conduct.

Why a watermark can be hard to detect
The method depends on Claude having enough suitable choices among tokens. Some text offers fewer such opportunities, and later changes can weaken or remove the pattern. Anthropic identifies several relevant cases:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Short samples: A brief excerpt contains fewer token choices from which a detector can assess a pattern.
- Constrained wording: Exact facts, required phrasing, and code leave less room for the model to choose among equivalent alternatives.
- Editing and mixing: Light proofreading may leave much of a person’s original wording intact; heavy editing, paraphrasing, or combining text from different sources can weaken the signal. Anthropic says a complete rewrite can remove the watermark.
- Unsupported model or route: Marking coverage differs by model, product surface, and cloud route, so generated text is not automatically marked in every case.
Anthropic has not published a Claude-specific detection accuracy percentage, false-positive rate, or minimum text length in the sources cited here. Avoid treating a detector result as more precise than the company’s stated likelihood estimate.

Which Claude models and surfaces are covered?
Anthropic’s Help Center page, “How Claude marks AI-generated content,” accessed October 7, 2026, lists coverage separately for first-party text watermarking, cloud-partner text watermarking, and C2PA credentials on supported files. Coverage differs by model; do not assume every Claude model has the same text and file marks.
The page says models launched on or after August 2, 2026 support marking at launch, while marking for earlier models is being added. It describes marking for supported models across Claude Platform/API, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag, with some platform or feature exceptions. Supported cloud-partner routes include AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry. Its starred Amazon Bedrock rollout was expected to finish by October 12, 2026, so that status was still pending as of October 10. Coverage can change; consult Anthropic’s current Help Center table for a named model or route.
Anthropic says supported-model marking applies worldwide. It says it introduced marking to comply with the EU AI Act and the EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content, which Anthropic says it signed in July 2026 alongside 190 other signatories. The company says it applied marking globally at launch because it did not have a durable way to scope it by region. These are Anthropic’s stated rationale and policy account.
How to check whether text was written by Claude
There is not currently a general public text checker from Anthropic. The company says its text-watermark detector is in private preview for eligible organizations, including regulators, law enforcement, media, fact-checkers, independent researchers, educational organizations, EU civil society groups, and enterprises with relevant compliance obligations. Anthropic says it plans to expand access.

If you are not part of an eligible organization, Anthropic’s text watermark detector is not a public self-service way to verify a passage. General AI-text detectors use different methods. Anthropic names Pangram as an example, but the sources cited here provide no comparative accuracy figures, so they do not support ranking detectors or treating an outside classification as proof.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Text watermarks and file credentials are different
| Signal | What it checks | Content and access | What a result indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude text watermark | A statistical pattern in token choices | Generated text on supported models and routes; Anthropic says detection is in private preview for eligible organizations | An estimate of whether Claude was involved, not proof of authorship |
| C2PA Content Credential | Signed provenance metadata | Supported generated files; Anthropic points users to its free Content Checker | Credential information associated with a file, not a text-watermark result |
| General AI-text detector | Linguistic patterns assessed by that detector’s method | Text, depending on the service | A service’s classification; it is not the Claude watermark or proof of who wrote the text |
Anthropic describes embedded text marking and C2PA signed metadata as separate mechanisms. Its Content Checker checks supported files for a Claude-issued Content Credential; it does not provide the same check as the text-watermark detector. A file credential’s history and a statistical text signal answer different questions.
Quick Recap
How to interpret a result responsibly
- Ask what was checked: a statistical text watermark, a file’s signed credential, or a general detector’s linguistic classification.
- Check whether the relevant model and generation route are covered in Anthropic’s current support table.
- Consider the amount and condition of the text: excerpts, constrained wording, edits, paraphrases, and mixed authorship can affect the signal.
- Do not use a positive result to identify a person or claim sole authorship; do not use a negative result to certify human writing.
- For consequential decisions, seek corroborating evidence rather than relying on a detector alone.
