There is no evidence-based single winner for every kind of scientific research. Claude can assist with literature reviews, coding, experiment planning and data exploration, but the strongest choice depends on the task, model version and workflow. Available comparisons range from clinical-trial interpretation to scientific benchmarks and a narrow coding-agent study; their results answer different questions and should not be collapsed into one ranking.
What Claude can do in a research workflow
Claude is a general-purpose AI assistant that researchers may use for work such as reviewing literature, writing or debugging code, planning experiments, using tools and looking for patterns in large datasets. Anthropic described these uses in an account published January 15, 2026, based on its work with research partners. That account is useful for understanding possible applications, but it is provider-reported experience—not a controlled, independent comparison showing that Claude improves research outcomes or outperforms other models.

It helps to separate assistance from scientific validation. A model can summarize papers, suggest analysis steps or draft code without establishing that its sources are complete, its calculations are correct or its conclusions are warranted. In research, a plausible answer is not enough: the evidence, method and intermediate work need to be checked.

Scientific research is a collection of different tasks. Interpreting a statistical result is not the same as reading a figure, writing reproducible code, identifying a limitation in a paper or completing a multi-step analysis with tools. A model’s result on one task does not establish how it will perform on the others.

Benchmarks also differ in their questions, inputs, scoring rules and model versions. A test of expert-written scientific problems, an evaluation of agreement with published clinical-trial conclusions, and a model card’s bioinformatics results are not interchangeable measures of research quality. They can provide evidence about particular abilities, but combining them into a single score would obscure what each test actually measures.
- Evidence interpretation: Does the answer accurately represent the source material and distinguish a study result from its implications?
- Statistics and uncertainty: Are methods, estimates, limitations and uncertainty described appropriately?
- Figures and documents: Can the model extract the relevant information from the formats used in your work?
- Code and reproducibility: Does the code run, produce the claimed output and preserve the specified method?
- Tool use and instruction fidelity: Can the model follow a multi-step plan, and are deviations or failures visible?
These are evaluation dimensions, not claims that any one system leads across all of them. The right comparison uses the same research task, reference materials, tools and scoring criteria for every candidate.

Those results are evidence about performance on that benchmark, not a general estimate of how often GPT-5.2—or another model—will get real research right. OpenAI describes the benchmark as constrained and says it does not capture everything scientists do. The organization’s own framing is that current models can support structured reasoning while open-ended thinking remains a substantial challenge.
Clinical-trial conclusion interpretation
A 2026 study in Scientific Reports tested how well model outputs agreed with published conclusions from 25 clinical trials. The reported median total scores were:
| System named in the study | Median total score | What the result represents |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 25/25 (100%) | Agreement with published clinical-trial conclusions in this 25-trial evaluation |
| Gemini | 21/25 (84%) | Agreement with published clinical-trial conclusions in this 25-trial evaluation |
| Grok3 | 18/25 (72%) | Agreement with published clinical-trial conclusions in this 25-trial evaluation |
| Claude | 17/25 (68%) | Agreement with published clinical-trial conclusions in this 25-trial evaluation |
In that evaluation, statistical understanding was Claude’s lowest-scoring median domain, at 3/5. The authors report inter-rater reliability of Cronbach’s α = 0.868. However, raters were not blinded to model identity, which the study identifies as a risk of subjective bias. The findings concern this particular set of trials and scoring approach; they are not general scientific accuracy rates and should not be used to rank models for unrelated disciplines or tasks.

Bioinformatics and scientific tool benchmarks
Google DeepMind’s September 2026 model card reports results for Gemini 3.8 Flash and selected other model versions on BioMysteryBench and LABBench2. It reports the following percentages:
| Model card evaluation | Gemini 3.8 Flash | Claude Opus 5 | GPT-5.6 Sol |
|---|---|---|---|
| BioMysteryBench, human-solvable tasks | 88.8% | 90.1% | 79.5% |
| LABBench2 | 86.2% | 84.2% | 82.1% |
These are provider-published model-card results for the listed benchmark setups and versions. They are useful for seeing that relative performance can change between evaluations: the order shown for the human-solvable BioMysteryBench row differs from the order on LABBench2. They do not demonstrate a general ranking across all scientific work. The same model card says Gemini 3.8 Flash accepts text, image, audio and video inputs, offers a context window of up to one million tokens, and may hallucinate. These are specifications and cautions stated in that September 2026 card, not a guarantee that every task or later version behaves the same way.
Research coding agents
A May 27, 2026 arXiv preprint compares Claude Code and Codex on a simulated gravitational-wave analysis pipeline. In the reported runs, Claude Code completed faster, but in one run silently departed from an instruction. Codex took longer and used explicit corrective restarts. The case is narrow and the report is a preprint, so it does not establish a general winner between coding agents. Its practical lesson is that elapsed time alone is an incomplete measure: the method followed, intermediate outputs, errors surfaced and ability to reproduce the result all matter.

How to choose a model for your research task
Start with the work you actually need done, not with a broad label such as “scientific research.” If the task is summarizing a set of papers, test source fidelity and whether important disagreements or limitations are retained. If it is statistical interpretation, assess whether the model correctly describes the method, result and uncertainty. For code, check execution and reproducibility. For a multi-step agent, inspect whether it follows instructions and leaves an auditable trail.
| Research job | What to test | What a useful result looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Literature synthesis | Coverage of supplied papers, accurate attribution, treatment of conflicting evidence | Claims can be traced to the cited source, and uncertainty or disagreement is not erased |
| Statistical interpretation | Understanding of the analysis, numerical accuracy and recognition of limitations | The explanation matches the reported methods and results without overstating what they prove |
| Figure or document reading | Extraction of labels, values, relationships and context from representative materials | Key details are read correctly and can be checked against the original |
| Research coding | Code correctness, execution, adherence to instructions and reproducibility | The analysis runs as specified, outputs are inspectable and results can be recreated |
| Tool-assisted, multi-step work | Tool use, instruction fidelity, visible intermediate steps and recovery from failure | Actions and decisions are reviewable rather than hidden behind a final answer |
Cost and latency can also affect a real choice, but compare them only when you have current, reliable information for the versions and access routes you would actually use. The cited evidence does not establish a comparable, general research-productivity improvement or a universal cost-performance winner.
A practical, fair comparison you can run
A small internal evaluation is often more relevant than a leaderboard if it reflects your lab’s data, methods and standards. Keep the task fixed so that a model is not rewarded for receiving easier inputs or more generous evaluation.
Best Value
- Choose representative tasks. Select a few real examples from the work at issue—for example, synthesizing supplied papers, interpreting one result, reading a representative figure or modifying a defined analysis script.
- Prepare the same inputs. Give each model the same documents, data, instructions and available tools. Record the product and model version used, since results may vary across versions.
- Set scoring criteria in advance. Score factual support, calculation accuracy, uncertainty handling, source traceability, code execution and reproducibility as relevant to the task. Include instruction fidelity and intermediate-step auditability for agents.
- Check outputs against authoritative materials. Have a qualified researcher verify claims, numbers, citations and code against the original papers, data or validated analysis rather than judging answers only by fluency.
- Keep the work inspectable. Retain inputs, outputs, tool actions and relevant intermediate results. For consequential analyses, rerun code and document the environment and steps needed to reproduce the result.
- Decide by task. Choose a system only for the jobs where it meets your threshold. A good result on one evaluation should not automatically qualify it for unrelated tasks.
This process also helps distinguish a model that produces a polished explanation from one that reliably supports the actual work. If two systems appear close, examine the errors that matter most: a missed caveat in a literature synthesis, an incorrect statistical interpretation or an undocumented change to analysis instructions may have different consequences from a slower response.
Where human review remains essential
Use AI output as assistance, not as an unverified research result. Check that references exist and support the claim attached to them; verify calculations and statistical interpretations; run and inspect code; and confirm that conclusions follow from the evidence. In an agent workflow, review intermediate actions as well as the final response, because a silent departure from instructions may not be apparent from a concise final summary.
The strongest claims supported by the available evidence are task-specific. Anthropic describes researchers using Claude in several parts of research, while independent and provider-published evaluations show that measured outcomes vary with the task and benchmark. None establishes Claude—or any other model—as the best choice for every scientific discipline and workflow.
