Claude Code’s dynamic workflows can coordinate “tens to hundreds” of parallel subagents, according to Anthropic’s May 28, 2026 announcement. That announcement does not establish a 1,000-agent maximum—or confirm that Claude can run exactly 1,000 agents—so the headline figure should not be treated as a verified limit. Dynamic workflows are designed to break larger coding tasks into parallel work, check the results, and combine them into a response.
What are Claude Code dynamic workflows?
Dynamic workflows let Claude plan from a prompt, divide the task into subtasks, and dispatch subagents to work in parallel. Claude then checks their results before combining them. Depending on the task, agents can investigate different angles, attempt to challenge findings, and iterate toward a result.

Anthropic describes these workflows as suited to long-running work that may take hours or days. Progress is saved so an interrupted workflow can resume. The approach is intended to bridge the gap between delegating to one subagent and building a full agent team, but the work is still coordinated through Claude Code rather than requiring the user to manually manage every agent.

Anthropic’s official announcement says dynamic workflows run “tens to hundreds” of parallel subagents in a session. It does not specify a precise maximum, and it does not substantiate a cap of 1,000. The exact ceiling is therefore unspecified in the announcement, not confirmed at 1,000.
#1 Best Overall
Anthropic’s Claude Platform documentation separately describes ordinary subagent delegation as one level deep, with up to 25 child threads at a time in a session. Advisor threads and workflow-run threads do not count toward that limit. That 25-thread figure applies to the documented subagent thread limit; it is not a stated ceiling for dynamic workflows. Anthropic’s multiagent orchestration documentation distinguishes the delegation approaches.
What kinds of work fit dynamic workflows?
Anthropic names tasks where many independent investigations or file-level changes can proceed at once:
- Codebase-wide bug hunts: inspect separate components or follow different possible causes in parallel.
- Profiler-guided optimization: investigate performance hotspots and potential changes across a large codebase.
- Security audits: review broad areas of a project, with independent checking before findings are reported.
- Large migrations and modernization: coordinate changes spanning many files.
- Independent or adversarial review: ask agents to validate or try to refute findings, particularly for high-stakes work.
These are examples Anthropic lists, not a guarantee that parallelizing a task will improve its result. A focused task with clear boundaries is a better starting point than an open-ended request, especially because each added workstream can consume tokens.

Anthropic’s May 28, 2026 announcement describes availability in Claude Code CLI, Desktop, and the VS Code extension for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, as well as through the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry. Product access can change, so consult the current Anthropic announcement for the latest availability.

According to that announcement, workflows are on by default for Max, Team, and Enterprise, and for Claude Code via API. Pro users can enable them in /config. Users can also ask Claude to create a workflow or enable the Claude Code ultracode setting. Organization administrators can disable workflows through managed settings.
- Check access: confirm your Claude Code plan or deployment supports dynamic workflows.
- Enable the feature if needed: for Pro, open Claude Code’s
/configand enable dynamic workflows; alternatively, use theultracodesetting as Anthropic describes. - Give Claude a bounded task: describe the codebase area, goal, and constraints so the parallel work has clear scope.
- Review the proposed run: the first time a workflow triggers, Claude presents the proposed run and asks for confirmation.
Do dynamic workflows use more tokens?
Yes. Anthropic warns that dynamic workflows can consume substantially more tokens than a typical Claude Code session. Parallel agents and repeated checking may increase usage, so the feature’s broader reach comes with a usage trade-off. Begin with a scoped task and review the proposed workflow before confirming it. Anthropic also says organization admins can turn workflows off through managed settings.

What Anthropic’s Bun example shows—and does not show
Anthropic reports that Jarred Sumner used dynamic workflows to port Bun from Zig to Rust. The company says the project involved roughly 750,000 lines of Rust, reached 99.8% of the existing test suite passing, and went from first commit to merge in eleven days. Anthropic also says hundreds of agents worked in parallel, with two reviewers on each file.
These are company-reported figures for one example, not an independent benchmark of workflow speed or quality. Anthropic noted the rewrite was not yet in production when it announced the example, so the figures do not establish production performance.
Dynamic workflows are not Claude Managed Agents
Claude Code dynamic workflows are a way for Claude Code to coordinate parallel subagents within a workflow. Claude Managed Agents is a separate suite of APIs for building and deploying cloud-hosted agents. Anthropic announced Managed Agents on April 8, 2026, describing multi-agent coordination as being in research preview at that time. Its availability and pricing are separate from Claude Code dynamic workflows; see Anthropic’s Managed Agents announcement for details and check the current status before relying on them.
