The change is about authorization and control paths—not a blanket loss of basic printing ability. The original restrictions concerned the X1 Series, and later reporting described similar default restrictions on the P1P, P1S and A1. The exact effect depends on the printer model, firmware and software versions.
What changed—and what “less capable” means
In 2025, Bambu Lab announced authorization controls for X1 Series firmware version 01.08.03.00 or above, alongside specified versions of Bambu Studio and Bambu Handy. The company said unauthorized third-party software would no longer be able to execute certain critical operations. It advised owners who depended on direct third-party software or hardware control to remain on older firmware; after updating, those tools would not control an X Series printer in the previous way.

That can reduce practical flexibility: a printer may still perform its core printing functions, while a preferred slicer, accessory or local control workflow loses direct access or requires an additional step. Bambu Lab also warned that outdated versions of its companion software could leave some controls unusable.

Tom’s Hardware reported on June 8, 2025 that new firmware for the P1P, P1S and A1 restricted unofficial software by default. That report described older firmware and Developer Mode as alternatives at the time. It is not a current compatibility chart: the exact present-day behavior must be checked against the specific model’s current release notes.

Why Bambu Lab said it made the change
Bambu Lab said the authorization checks were intended to verify hardware interactions, including axis movement and heating, and to address abnormal requests to its cloud services. In its 2025 announcement, the company reported a peak of up to 30 million unauthorized requests per day. That is the manufacturer’s reported figure, not an independently verified measurement in the reporting covered here; no independent security audit or confirmed effectiveness figure is established by those sources.
The company summarized its position this way: “This security update is necessary to enhance the overall security of your printer.” That explains the manufacturer’s stated rationale, but it does not by itself establish how much the update improves security in practice.

What the change means for common workflows
Using Bambu’s own software
Contemporaneous reporting described users of Bambu’s own software as less affected than owners relying on direct third-party access. Still, Bambu Lab warned that companion software versions matter: if Bambu Studio or Bambu Handy is too old for the printer’s firmware, some controls may not work as expected.
Using OrcaSlicer or another third-party slicer
Third-party slicing could continue through Bambu Connect, Bambu Lab’s separate communication client for connecting third-party slicers to printers. This preserves a route for using another slicer, but adds a client and a separate communication step to the workflow. Later reporting also described limitations in viewing or changing some printer and AMS settings directly from OrcaSlicer in a Connect workflow. Those observations should not be treated as a guarantee for every model or current software version.

Using accessories or direct network control
Accessories and software that relied on direct communication with the printer may be affected by authorization controls. Bambu Lab proposed LAN Standard Mode and an optional Developer Mode in a January 20, 2025 follow-up. The company said Developer Mode would leave MQTT, livestream and FTP open for advanced users. It also said users choosing that mode would take responsibility for local network security and would not receive customer support for the mode.
Bambu Lab explicitly rejected claims that the change disables third-party filament or bricks the printer. The documented issue is control and access, not a general inability to print or use filament from another source.

Should you update your Bambu Lab printer?
Decide based on the exact printer and the controls you rely on—not on a general claim that every update makes every printer worse. Before installing a firmware update:
- Identify the printer model and the firmware version currently installed.
- Check that model’s current release notes for authorization changes and the status of LAN Standard Mode, Developer Mode and third-party integrations.
- List any slicers, accessories, scripts or local tools that communicate directly with the printer; confirm their current compatibility rather than assuming that a slicer’s ability to prepare files means its printer-control features will still work.
- Check whether your intended workflow needs Bambu Connect or another additional client, and whether it supports the controls you actually use.
- If considering Developer Mode, weigh the open interfaces against the stated responsibility for local network security and the absence of manufacturer support for that mode.
- If you depend on a direct third-party connection, do not assume an update is reversible or that older firmware remains available; verify the current model-specific options before proceeding.
The announcements and reporting establish the 2025 policy changes and the routes proposed at that time, but not a complete compatibility matrix or the exact current behavior of every model as of October 2026. Check Bambu Lab’s latest release notes for your printer before updating.
