A proposed ocean-based carbon-removal method would use electricity to separate seawater into acid and base, then put each where it is intended to help: acid in the deep ocean to dissolve carbonate sediments, and base near the surface to support continued uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide. A model reported in 2022 projected removal of up to 3 gigatonnes of carbon per year over 50 years, but this is a simulation—not a field-tested result or an operating system.
How could changing ocean acidity lower atmospheric carbon dioxide?
The proposal, described by Michael Tyka, C. Van Arsdale, and J. C. Platt in a 2022 paper, treats seawater acidity as something that can be redistributed. Instead of relying on large quantities of crushed terrestrial minerals as its central feedstock, the system would use energy to split seawater electrochemically into an acidic stream and a basic one. The proposal is outlined in Chemistry World’s report on the study.

- Generate acid and base: An electrochemical process separates seawater into acidic and alkaline streams. Wave, wind, or ocean thermal energy are described as possible energy sources.
- Release acid at depth: The acidic stream would be placed near naturally occurring carbonate sediments. Lower pH is intended to speed their dissolution.
- Return dissolved carbon toward the surface: Dissolving carbonate produces bicarbonate, which would eventually circulate toward surface waters.
- Use the base near the surface: The alkaline stream is intended to stabilize surface pH and support continued atmospheric CO2 uptake.
This is a proposed carbon-cycle intervention: it aims to change how and where ocean chemistry processes carbon, rather than simply pumping captured CO2 into storage. The researchers’ paper is cited as M. D. Tyka, C. Van Arsdale, and J. C. Platt, Energy & Environmental Science (2022), DOI 10.1039/d1ee01532j.

What did the simulations project?
Chemistry World reported that the model projected up to 3 gigatonnes of carbon removed annually over 50 years. It also reported a modeled surface-water alkalinity increase and a deep-water pH decrease of no more than 0.2. These are model outputs, not measurements from a deployed system or ocean trial. The reported removal figure is carbon, not tonnes of CO2; the two units should not be treated as interchangeable.

The same report gave a minimum modeled cost of $93–297 per tonne of CO2 captured. That estimate depends on deployment at a scale described as many orders of magnitude larger than the current uses of the relevant technologies. It is therefore not an established commercial price or a demonstrated cost for a working installation.
What could the pH shift mean for ocean life?
The intervention deliberately makes deep water more acidic near carbonate deposits while aiming to make surface water more alkaline. That distribution matters: a rise in surface pH does not establish that all ecological effects would be beneficial, particularly when the deep ocean is also being changed.

Phil Renforth, an engineer and geochemist at Heriot-Watt University, told Chemistry World: “While the deep ocean becomes more acidic in their model, the surface ocean pH increases, which may be good news for surface dwelling organisms and ecosystems sensitive to ocean acidification.” This is an expert comment on the modeled pH pattern, not evidence of observed ecosystem outcomes. The reporting does not establish the consequences of sustained deep-ocean acidification.

The projected scale would require much more than demonstrating that electrochemistry can separate seawater into acid and base. The report does not establish full-system engineering performance, field validation, lifecycle costs, or how the results would change under different model assumptions. It also does not provide enough detail to independently assess the model’s assumptions or sensitivity analysis.

- Contains one (1) API POND WIDE RANGE pH TEST KIT 160-Test Pond Water Test Kit, including 1 bottle of testing solution, 1 color card and 1 test tube with cap
- Helps monitor and adjust pH and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish
- Accurately reads pH levels 5.0 to 9.0.
- Because different geographies have different tap water conditions, and different fish need different pH levels to be healthy, API helps measure pH levels & detect pH fluctuation caused by fish waste, uneaten food and addition of tap water.
- Use for weekly monitoring and when water or fish problems appear
Renforth cautioned that “the scale of deployment examined in the study is so many orders of magnitude larger than what these technologies are used for today… time will tell which ones can get cheaper with scale.” In other words, the cost projection relies on substantial scale-up; it should not be read as proof that the system can be built, operated, or financed at the modeled level.

What the proposal does—and does not—show
- It shows a modeled pathway: use energy to create acid and base from seawater, apply them in different ocean layers, and aim to promote carbonate dissolution and atmospheric CO2 uptake.
- It does not show current removal at the projected rate: the 3-gigatonne annual estimate is a simulation result, not a measured deployment outcome.
- It does not settle environmental safety or economics: deep-water ecological effects and real-world lifecycle costs remain unestablished in the reported evidence.
