Unexplained slowdowns, persistent pop-ups, browser changes, unfamiliar extensions, disabled system tools, or messages sent from your accounts can be signs of malware. None proves an infection by itself: software problems can have other causes, and fake virus warnings are often designed to trick you. Look for a cluster of changes, then check safely.
What signs can indicate malware?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Google list several changes that merit investigation. A single symptom is not a reliable diagnosis; a combination of unfamiliar changes is more concerning.

- Performance problems: Your device becomes unusually slow, freezes, crashes, shows repeated operating-system errors, or stops working properly.
- Unexpected browser behavior: The home page or search engine changes, websites redirect you, or pop-ups and new tabs keep appearing.
- Unfamiliar additions: You find toolbars, browser extensions, or other add-ons you do not remember installing.
- Warnings or storage changes: You see messages claiming there is a virus, or notice reduced storage without a clear explanation.
- Security tools stop working: Tools such as Task Manager or Activity Monitor are disabled or inaccessible.
- Messages you did not send: Friends receive emails or social-media messages from your account that you did not write.
The FTC lists slowdowns, crashes, browser changes, excessive pop-ups, repeated errors, disabled tools, and messages sent without your knowledge as warning signs in its consumer guidance on recognizing and removing malware. Google also describes persistent pop-ups, unwanted extensions, changed search settings, virus messages, reduced storage, and a device that no longer works properly in its Google Account Help guidance.

Yes. A warning that appears unexpectedly in a pop-up does not establish that your device is infected. Some alerts try to frighten you into calling a number, clicking a link, paying money, sharing financial details, or allowing a stranger to control your device.

What should you do if you suspect malware?
- Stop entering sensitive information. Avoid logging in to accounts or entering passwords, banking details, or other sensitive information on the device you suspect is compromised. The FTC advises: “Immediately stop logging into online accounts with your usernames, passwords, or other sensitive information — like shopping or banking.”
- Update security software and scan. Use reputable security software obtained from a source you trust, update it, and run a scan. Follow the software’s instructions for any threats it detects.
- Secure potentially exposed accounts. If an account may have been exposed, change its password and enable two-factor authentication. When practical, make these changes from another device you trust.
- Get trusted help if the problem continues. If a scan or other basic steps do not resolve the symptoms, contact the device manufacturer or a support provider you already trust. Depending on the device and situation, a reset may be necessary.
The FTC recommends stopping sensitive logins, updating security software, scanning, and securing accounts that may have been exposed in its malware guidance. Google notes that continuing signs may require a computer reset or help from the manufacturer in its account security guidance. Exact cleanup steps vary by operating system and device, so do not assume one set of instructions applies to every computer or phone.

How can malware get onto a device?
Common routes include opening a malicious email attachment, installing software bundled with another download, downloading from a third-party site, using peer-to-peer file-sharing services, or connecting an unknown removable device. Microsoft describes these risks in its guidance on protecting a PC from viruses. Be cautious with unexpected attachments, downloads, and USB drives; noticing a possible route does not by itself confirm infection.
