A low price or unfamiliar brand alone does not mean a streaming device is infected. The more useful question is whether it shows specific warning signs: for example, promises of free premium content, unofficial app sources, requests to turn off Google Play Protect, or unexplained network activity. The FBI says some compromised devices may arrive with malware already installed or acquire a backdoor while downloading apps during setup.
What risks do suspicious streaming devices create?
A compromised device connected to home Wi-Fi may be recruited into a botnet or residential proxy network. In a residential proxy setup, someone else routes internet activity through your household’s connection and IP address without your knowledge. That can make outside activity appear to originate from your connection.

The FBI describes the BADBOX 2.0 botnet as involving “millions of infected devices,” but its advisory does not give a denominator or an individual device’s probability of infection. That figure is not a measure of how many cheap or off-brand streaming devices are compromised. The advisories also do not establish that every compromised streaming device steals stored personal data. Which warning signs should you look for?
- Promises of free premium content: Be wary of devices advertised as unlocked or as providing free sports, shows, or movies. The FBI warns that they may contain malware or backdoors. It advises: “Avoid TV streaming devices that claim to provide free sports, TV shows, and movies, as they may contain malware or backdoors that hijack your internet network and can lead to identity theft or other cyber crimes.” FBI, March 12, 2026.
- Requests to disable Google Play Protect: Treat an instruction to turn off this protection as a warning sign, not a routine setup step.
- Unofficial app marketplaces or unknown apps: Apps obtained outside trusted, official stores may introduce risk, including during initial setup.
- Unexplained network traffic: Unexpected activity from a streaming device warrants closer attention, especially alongside other warning signs.
- Unclear maker or support: Check who makes the device and whether the manufacturer explains how it provides software and firmware updates. An unfamiliar name alone does not prove compromise, and a recognizable brand is not a guarantee of security.
How can you choose and set up a device more carefully?
- Check the manufacturer and update information. Look for an identifiable maker and clear information about software and firmware updates before buying.
- Use trusted app sources. Prefer an official, trusted app store and known publishers. Avoid unofficial sideloading and unknown applications.
- Keep protections enabled. Do not disable Google Play Protect in response to an unexpected setup request, and be cautious about unusual permissions.
- Install updates. Keep the device’s software and firmware current. The FBI calls timely patching “one of the most efficient and cost-effective steps to minimize its exposure to cybersecurity threats.” FBI, June 5, 2025.
- Review your connected devices and network activity. Periodically check which devices are on your home network and watch for activity that seems out of place.
What should you do if an Android TV box seems suspicious?
If a device asks you to disable protections, install an unknown app, or accept unusual permissions—or you notice unexplained network activity—stop using it for sensitive tasks while you assess the situation. The FBI’s 2025 advisory says to consider disconnecting a suspicious device from the network. If you suspect an intrusion, report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
