Put consequential changes behind fresh human approval, and keep action-level logs so you can investigate and revoke access. These controls reduce the potential impact of mistakes or manipulation; they do not eliminate prompt injection or other agent risks.
What does a safe connection look like?
Think of an agent as a principal that can make requests to company systems, not as a trusted user whose intentions can be established by its instructions. Its access should have an owner, a stated purpose, a defined identity, explicit permissions, an approved set of tools, and a lifecycle. The boundary that decides whether a request can proceed belongs in ordinary identity and access-control systems outside the model.

A request can pass through several boundaries: the person or process initiating work, the agent runtime, a connector or MCP server, and the business application or data store. A permission check in one layer does not prove that the next layer will enforce the same identity or scope. Design and verify authorization across the full path.

Which identity and access model should you choose?
Use these comparisons to evaluate a design. The safer default is a distinct identity and narrow, task-specific authority; a design that cannot express or audit those boundaries is harder to secure.
| Decision | Safer design | Riskier design | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agent identity | Unique, lifecycle-managed identity with a named owner and documented purpose | Shared service account or credential used by unrelated agents | Can you identify the agent, owner, grants, dependencies, and environment, then disable it without disrupting unrelated workloads? |
| Execution model | User-delegated access when the task should inherit a specific user’s authority; autonomous identity when the workflow genuinely runs independently | Unclear or mixed identity, where logs and permissions do not show whose authority was used | Is the initiating user recorded when relevant, and are autonomous permissions separately bounded? |
| Permission scope | Grant access to the specific tenant, workspace, data sensitivity, resource, and operation required | Broad access granted because the agent might need it later | What is the effective aggregate access across all roles, connectors, and downstream services? |
| Tool capability | Reviewed allowlist, with retrieval separate from editing, sending, deletion, export, deployment, and permission changes | General-purpose tools that can perform unreviewed operations | Can each action be authorized and disabled independently? |
| Temporary privilege | Short-lived credentials or just-in-time elevation for exceptional tasks | Standing elevated access | Does temporary access expire, and can you verify and revoke it? |
How should you implement the connection?
-
Inventory the workflow before granting access
Name the owner, use case, environment, data stores, connectors, tools, downstream services, and whether execution is user-delegated or autonomous. Write down the exact task and what the agent must never do. Include guest and cross-tenant paths if they exist.
-
Create a distinct identity and permission plan
Assign a unique, lifecycle-managed principal to the agent. Scope its roles to the task and examine effective access across integrations, rather than reviewing each grant in isolation. Do not reuse a broad service account for unrelated agents. Keep credentials out of prompts and model-visible text; have the trusted runtime or connector supply them at the authentication boundary.

Expose only reviewed tools and actions
Publish an allowlist of tools and constrain what each tool can do. Separate read and retrieval from write or remediation where practical. Treat sending messages, external sharing, deletion, export, purchases, deployment, and access changes as distinct capabilities rather than incidental parts of a broad tool.

-
Authorize each hop, including the downstream service
Bind each request to the initiating principal and requested scope. The connector must check authorization before carrying out a tool call, and the business service or data store must enforce the identity’s actual permissions as well. Do not assume that access granted in the agent interface protects an API or downstream resource.
-
Gate high-impact operations
Require fresh human confirmation for consequential actions such as deletion, external sharing, purchases, deployment, or permission changes. Where elevated privilege is needed only for a particular operation, use time-bound elevation rather than permanent broad access. A prompt can express intended behavior, but deterministic controls must decide whether an action executes.
-
Test a bounded, low-risk deployment before expanding
Start with read-only work in a limited environment. Exercise representative benign inputs and adversarial cases, including indirect prompt injection and attempts to trigger unauthorized actions. Examine permissions and logs before adding write actions, more tools, or broader data access. Re-review whenever the tool set, data scope, or deployment changes.

What must an MCP server check?
Treat an MCP server as an API security boundary, not as a trusted extension of the model. Microsoft Learn’s “Secure a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server with Microsoft Entra ID” says: “Because an MCP server can act on behalf of a user or an autonomous agent, you should protect it like any other API: require an OAuth 2.0 access token on every request, and validate that token before you run a tool.” The guidance was retrieved October 4, 2026.

For each request, require and validate the OAuth 2.0 access token before tool execution, then check that the authenticated identity is authorized for the requested tool, operation, and resource. The downstream service must enforce its own authorization. Confirm the supported OAuth flow and permission behavior in the specific server and product configuration you deploy; a general MCP design does not establish how every implementation handles identity or scope.
How do you reduce prompt-injection and tool-abuse risk?
Retrieved documents, emails, websites, user inputs, and tool output are untrusted content. Any of them may contain instructions that try to redirect the agent or induce it to misuse a tool. Treating content as untrusted means the agent’s interpretation of it must not be able to grant itself access or bypass server-side authorization.
- Allowlist reviewed tools and actions, and enforce their permissions at the connector and downstream service.
- Keep critical data and action boundaries in conventional access-control logic, not solely in system prompts or model behavior.
- Review tool descriptions and connector configuration, because they affect what the model can call.
- Use input and output checks and prompt-injection defenses as additional safeguards, not substitutes for authorization.
OWASP’s “AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet,” retrieved October 4, 2026, covers direct and indirect prompt injection and tool abuse and recommends least privilege. No wording of an instruction can guarantee that an agent will resist hostile content.

Preserve enough detail to reconstruct an action across the orchestrator, connector, and service. Useful fields include the caller and agent identity, role or scope, tool and action, target resource, authorization outcome, initiating user where relevant, and a correlation identifier. Make sure the records can be related across system boundaries; an isolated tool-call log may not show which identity or downstream resource was involved.

Rehearse the response rather than assuming revocation will work. Test disabling the agent, rotating credentials, invalidating or expiring tokens, and removing stale downstream grants. Review its effective permissions after changes to roles, tools, data scope, or deployment. Microsoft’s agent guidance retrieved October 4, 2026, recommends permission review and revocation testing.
How should you evaluate a vendor or deployment?
Compare the exact version and configuration you plan to deploy, not just a feature list. Check whether it supports a distinct agent identity, fine-grained scope by resource and operation, per-call authorization, tool allowlists, approval gates, useful audit records, and practical revocation. Also validate fit with your identity provider, tenancy, data-residency requirements, security monitoring, and contractual data handling. Product capabilities and terms can vary; the cited guidance does not establish the behavior of any particular vendor configuration.
Protecting the human administrator’s account is a separate supporting control. CISA’s “Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance,” dated December 18, 2024, describes hardware-based FIDO keys as a phishing-resistant sign-in option where supported and feasible; CISA’s “Implementing Phishing-Resistant MFA,” published in October 2022, provides related MFA guidance. A key can protect an administrator’s sign-in, but it does not limit an agent’s permissions or tool calls.
