You can reduce your contribution to light pollution by switching off lights that serve no current purpose, then making necessary outdoor lighting useful, targeted, low-level, time-limited and warm-colored. You do not have to replace every fixture: start with the switch, then improve the lights that remain.
Why outdoor lighting choices matter
The National Park Service (NPS) defines light pollution as artificial light introduced into the natural environment. It can interfere with viewing the stars, affect wildlife and ecological functions, and waste energy. NPS gives examples such as moths drawn to lamps and sea turtle hatchlings being misdirected by artificial light. These effects vary by setting; one light does not cause every impact.

How to reduce light pollution around your home
1. Audit outdoor lights after dark
Walk around your home and check each outdoor light. Ask what task it serves and whether it shines upward, causes glare, spills onto a neighbor’s property, is brighter than necessary, or stays on all night. 2. Turn off lights without a useful purpose
Switch off decorative, landscape or porch lighting when it is not needed. If a light has no useful purpose, simply leaving it off—or removing or disconnecting its lamp where appropriate—may be all that is required. You do not need to buy a replacement fixture or gadget to reduce unnecessary light.
3. Aim and shield lights that need to stay on
Direct light onto the area where it is needed, rather than into the sky, a neighbor’s property or someone’s eyes. A fully shielded or full cut-off fixture directs light down onto the task area. Avoid globes or diffusers that hang below a fixture and floodlights aimed sideways; they can send light beyond the area you intend to illuminate. 4. Use the lowest brightness that does the job
Compare bulbs by lumens, which measure light output, rather than watts, which measure power use and do not provide a dependable brightness comparison across different lighting technologies. DarkSky’s home assessment offers rough examples: 300 lumens or less for pathways and 300–800 lumens for work areas, and advises keeping total output below 1,000 lumens. 5. Choose warm-white or amber light
For outdoor lighting, look for warm-white or amber lamps rather than blue-white light. Color temperature is shown in kelvins (K): a lower number indicates warmer light. DarkSky’s home assessment prefers 2700 K or lower, while its responsible home lighting page recommends 3000 K or lower. NPS recommends 2700 K for many outdoor uses and notes that 2200 K or direct amber may suit sensitive environments. These are recommendations, not a single legal standard. If you use a higher color temperature, good shielding, careful aiming and controls matter too. 6. Limit how long lights operate
Use a timer for lighting needed at predictable times, a motion or occupancy sensor for short-term access or security, or a dimmer where the fixture supports one. These controls keep light available when it serves a purpose while avoiding unnecessary hours of operation. What if you rent or cannot change the fixture?
Start with changes you are allowed to make: switch off unnecessary lights, use a lower-lumen or warmer bulb if the fixture permits it, and set a reminder to turn off a porch light. If the fixture itself is poorly aimed, unshielded or excessively bright, ask the property manager whether it can be adjusted or replaced. - Purpose: Is the light needed for a specific task?
- Shielding and direction: Does the fixture direct light down onto the target area?
- Output: Does its lumen rating provide only the brightness needed?
- Color: Is it warm-white or amber, preferably 2700 K or lower?
- Control: Can a timer, dimmer or motion sensor limit its use?
If replacing a fixture, a fully shielded outdoor light may help direct light downward. If keeping the existing fixture, a compatible warm or amber bulb, timer or motion sensor may be enough.
