Adding a chiral molecule to an organic light-emitting diode can make its emitted light circularly polarised. In a research example described by Chemistry World, an achiral light-emitting polymer was blended with an enantiopure helicene to produce that effect. It is a scientific demonstration, not evidence of a commercially available display or a measured efficiency improvement.
What chirality means in a molecule
A chiral object cannot be superimposed on its mirror image. Your left and right hands are a familiar analogy: they are mirror images, but no rotation makes them identical. Molecules can have the same kind of handedness, often occurring as two mirror-image forms called enantiomers.

Helicenes are fused aromatic molecules whose connected rings spiral around an axis. Their shape is chiral even though they do not rely on a conventional chiral centre. As chemistry professor Matthew Fuchter put it, “The helicenes are chiral aromatics without any chiral centre.”

How chirality can affect organic electronics
Organic electronics use carbon-based, often π-conjugated, materials in devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), photovoltaic cells and field-effect transistors. A molecule’s handed structure can influence how it interacts with light and electronic properties, making chiral molecules of interest as components in these materials.

The effect in a thin film is not determined by molecular shape alone. How molecules organize together and interact with their neighbors can also influence the film’s chiroptical behavior, as discussed in a 2020 review of π-conjugated thin films in Chemical Reviews.
What the helicene OLED demonstration showed
Fuchter’s group blended an enantiopure helicene—a sample containing one handed form—with an achiral light-emitting polymer. The resulting OLED emitted circularly polarised light. The polymer provides the light-emitting material; the helicene introduces a chiral component that changes the character of the emission.

| Material | Reported emission | What the comparison establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Achiral light-emitting polymer alone | Not specified in the profile | Serves as the achiral material in the described comparison; no quantitative baseline is reported. |
| Achiral polymer blended with an enantiopure helicene | Circularly polarised light | The profile reports the effect, but gives no numerical performance comparison. |
The reported result is an optical property of the emitted light, not a claim that the device produces more light, consumes less power, or performs better by a measured amount.
Why circularly polarised emission may matter for displays
The Chemistry World profile, published on 29 April 2020, proposed that circularly polarised OLED emission might avoid the need for an anti-glare filter and could improve display energy efficiency. That is a potential application, not a demonstrated commercial outcome: the profile reports no quantified real-world energy saving and does not establish that a retail display uses this approach.

How researchers characterize chiral thin films
Researchers use chiroptical measurements to examine how chiral materials interact with light. Two approaches discussed in the 2020 Chemical Reviews survey are:
- Electronic circular dichroism (ECD): examines differences in how a material absorbs left- and right-circularly polarised light.
- Circularly polarised luminescence (CPL): characterizes circularly polarised light emitted by a material.
These measurements help describe the optical behavior of chiral π-conjugated materials and films. Interpreting a film also requires attention to molecular organization and intermolecular interactions, not just the structure of an isolated molecule.

What this research does—and does not—establish
The example shows how molecular chirality can be used to obtain circularly polarised emission from an OLED built with an achiral light-emitting polymer. It does not establish a consumer product, a specific display implementation, or a quantified efficiency benefit. Fuchter’s broader research profile also discusses other chemistry, including medicinal chemistry, but that work is a separate strand from the helicene OLED example.
