A marketplace listing can help you find an AI agent; it cannot prove the agent can complete your task. Before hiring, look for evidence tied to the agent’s tested configuration, task, resource limits and actual delivery—and clear rules for acceptance, disputes and payment.
Why listings and ratings are not proof of delivery
A listing answers a discovery question: which agents might be suitable? A rating or trust badge may add a claim about reputation or identity, but it does not establish that an agent can perform a particular job within your requirements, budget and deadline.

Marketplace design matters, too. Microsoft Research introduced Magentic Marketplace as an open-source simulated environment for studying agent markets, including search, matching, negotiation and transactions between consumer-representing assistants and business-representing service agents. In experiments using synthetic data, the authors found that marketplace performance depended on conditions such as search quality and scale. They also reported a 10–30x advantage for response speed over quality in their simulated setting. Those results describe the paper’s experiments, not a measured effect in live marketplaces. Match the evaluation to the job
A benchmark score is meaningful only with its context. Check what task domain was tested, which agent configuration and tools were used, what evaluation budget or resource limits applied, and what quality and cost were measured. A result from a different configuration or task may not predict performance on your work.

Steve Drew and Jiayu Zhou’s LEGIT paper, submitted to arXiv on September 18, 2026, describes how scores can be difficult to compare across tasks, software and budgets. It proposes records that bind quality and cost per solved task to the agent configuration, task domain, evaluation budget and supporting evidence. LEGIT is a preprint proposing an approach, not an adopted marketplace standard. Read the LEGIT preprint.
Ask what evidence you can inspect
A score alone is weaker than a record that connects the claim to inspectable evidence. Depending on the job, useful evidence could include delivered files, outputs, logs, or fingerprints that let parties verify which inputs and outputs were involved without exposing private task content publicly. Ask what the marketplace preserves, who can inspect it, and how it is linked to the specific delivery.

Agree on acceptance before work begins
Define the requested outcome, required format, deadline, budget, and what counts as acceptable work before commissioning the agent. Also check what happens if the deadline is missed, the result fails the criteria, or either party disputes the outcome. A marketplace’s appeal and refund rules matter because a signed record can establish what was agreed and submitted; it cannot decide by itself whether the work is useful or correct.
Which trust mechanisms prove which claims?
Identity, authorization, evaluation, delivery evidence and settlement answer different questions. Treat them as separate links in an evidence chain rather than interchangeable badges.

| Mechanism | What it can help establish | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Agent identity and signed transaction intent | Which agent is communicating and what commerce intent is being conveyed. Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol describes agent-specific signatures and data elements for agent intent, consumer recognition and optional payment information. | That a hired task was completed correctly. Visa says its initial specifications apply to its network; they are not universal marketplace coverage. Visa’s protocol announcement. |
| Task-specific evaluation record | How an agent configuration performed on a task domain under stated evaluation conditions, with measured quality, cost and supporting evidence. | That the same agent will perform equally on another task, with different tools or under a different budget. LEGIT presents this as a proposal, not a settled standard. LEGIT preprint. |
| Signed scope and delivery receipt | What parties agreed to, which agents were involved and what delivery record is associated with the job. ANS describes receipts linked to both agents’ histories, with input and output fingerprints rather than public task content. | That the submitted work is correct or meets a buyer’s needs; that still requires task-appropriate checks. ANS marketplace page. |
| Schema validation and automatic settlement | Whether a service-call output matches a specified format, which ANS says can trigger automatic settlement for direct calls. | Whether the answer is accurate. ANS explicitly cautions: “A valid format does not guarantee a correct answer.” ANS marketplace page. |
| Escrow and machine-verifiable delivery settlement proposal | A proposed way to connect verification of delivery with settlement. | An established, current standard. The VCAP page identifies the document as an individual-submission Internet-Draft, a working document, with a stated expiry of September 25, 2026. That date has passed; treat it as a work-in-progress proposal, not a finalized protocol. VCAP Internet-Draft. |
How should delivery, rejection and payment work?
Connect the agreement to the receipt
The job record should connect the agreed scope and agent identity to the submitted result. A signed receipt can make that chain traceable, but it is evidence of the transaction and submission—not an automatic judgment of quality. The buyer still needs criteria suited to the task, such as a review of the deliverable or a check that required outputs are present.
Read the failure and appeal rules
Before paying or authorizing work, find out whether payment is held, what triggers release or refund, how missed deadlines are handled, and whether rejected work can be appealed. ANS’s page describes signed terms, held payment, refunds for missed deadlines and an appeal path for rejected work. Those are descriptions of that marketplace’s stated process; check its current terms directly because policies can change. ANS marketplace page.

Keep payment authorization distinct from proof of work
A payment protocol can help a merchant recognize an agent or understand its transaction intent without showing that an agent completed a service successfully. Visa’s October 14, 2025 announcement also reported a 4,700% increase in AI-driven traffic to U.S. retail websites over the preceding year, based on Adobe Data Insights, and said 85% of shoppers who had used AI to shop reported an improved shopping experience, attributing that figure to Adobe Data Insights in August 2025. These are retail traffic and shopper-experience figures—not measures of marketplace job completion or delivery quality. Visa’s announcement describes its initial protocol specifications as applying to its network and its standards work as complementary to other protocols. Visa’s October 2025 announcement.

Examples illustrate possible mechanisms, not broad adoption. On October 7, 2026, the reviewed ANS marketplace page showed six registered agents, no completed jobs and $0 paid. That is a dated snapshot of one site, not a count of the wider market or evidence that all marketplaces are at the same stage. View the ANS marketplace page.
Visa’s protocol announcement similarly describes a network-specific commerce trust layer, while the LEGIT preprint proposes a way to make evaluation records more comparable. Neither establishes a universal delivery standard. Buyers should assess the actual evidence and rules offered by the marketplace they are considering.
A practical pre-hire checklist
- Identity and authority: Can you identify the agent and determine what it is authorized to do?
- Relevant evaluation: Are results tied to the tested configuration, task domain, tools, budget and resource limits?
- Inspectable delivery: What artifact, log, receipt or fingerprint connects the claimed result to this job?
- Acceptance criteria: Is success defined in terms you can check, rather than a generic rating or valid output format?
- Failure handling: Are deadlines, rejection, refunds and appeals explained before work starts?
- Settlement record: Can you see what triggers payment and how the outcome is recorded?
The strongest marketplace evidence is a chain: identified agent and agreed scope, task-appropriate evaluation, traceable delivery, explicit acceptance and dispute rules, and a settlement record. Each element addresses a different risk; none should be mistaken for proof of everything.
