Short answer: a camera-based mower does not automatically dispense with GPS. A camera may recognize grass edges and obstacles, provide local movement data, or support satellite positioning when signals weaken. A smaller group of products is marketed around vision-led boundary recognition without a boundary wire or antenna. Check the exact model’s navigation architecture before assuming it is GPS-free.
What “wire-free” and “GPS-free” actually mean
A boundary wire is a physical loop buried or pinned around the mowing area. The mower detects that loop and stays inside it. A wire-free mower defines its working area in another way, but that does not identify which technology it uses.

Some wire-free systems use GNSS (the broader satellite-navigation family that includes GPS) and correction data such as RTK. Others combine satellite positioning with cameras, inertial sensors and visual mapping. A vision-led design may identify the transition between grass and a path, bed or other non-grass surface and use that visible edge as its boundary. The phrase “camera-based” describes a sensor capability, not a complete navigation architecture.

Worx markets its Landroid Vision family around camera recognition of lawn boundaries and obstacles without a boundary wire or antenna. That is the clearest example associated with the GPS-free question, but the exact current model and regional specification should be checked before describing it as having no GPS. GARDENA smart SILENO sense, EGO AURA-R2 and STIGA’s wire-free systems explicitly include satellite positioning in their published descriptions.

How the camera turns lawn images into navigation decisions
1. Capturing the scene
The mower’s camera continuously captures images ahead of the machine. Worx describes a high-dynamic-range, full-HD wide-angle camera intended to see the surrounding lawn, its shape and common obstacles. High dynamic range is useful when a scene contains bright sunlight and dark shade, although the manufacturer’s description is not an independent performance test.
2. Classifying grass, edges and objects
Onboard software analyzes visual features. Depending on the model, it may classify a region as grass or non-grass, identify a visible edge, recognize an object in the travel path, or compare the current image with visual features seen moments earlier. That classification can tell the mower to continue, slow down, turn, or avoid an object.
3. Combining vision with other sensors
A camera is rarely the only sensor. EGO says AURA-R2 combines RTK, visual simultaneous localization and mapping (visual SLAM), and visual-inertial odometry. Its cameras map visual features and detect obstacles, while RTK uses satellite signals and correction data for precise positioning. This is a combined navigation stack rather than camera-only mowing.

Husqvarna documents another arrangement. On supported Automower models, AI vision works with EPOS satellite navigation. When the satellite signal is weak or temporarily lost, the camera can help verify that the mower is still on grass and continue operation. The camera therefore reduces interruptions but does not replace the satellite-defined boundary.

4. Updating movement or a map
Some systems use visual features to estimate local movement or update a map. Do not assume every camera mower creates a persistent map, stores images, or uses the same mapping method. Product documentation for the specific model is the only reliable way to establish those details.
How boundary behavior differs by system
Physical edge recognition
A vision-led mower can use a visible transition—such as turf meeting paving or a planted bed—as a practical limit. The mower must be able to see and reliably classify that transition. A grass edge hidden by overgrowth, shadow, water or similar-looking material is a harder case than a clean, contrasting border.
Virtual boundaries
Satellite-based models generally let you map a virtual perimeter in an app. The mower then uses GNSS or RTK to calculate its position relative to that perimeter. Camera data may supplement the position estimate or verify the surface, but the boundary itself remains virtual and satellite-defined.
Signal-loss assistance
Some products are designed to continue through short GNSS interruptions. Husqvarna’s documented AI-vision function checks whether the mower is on grass when EPOS reception is weak or lost. STIGA describes GNSS-RTK navigation with AGS planning around predicted signal gaps. These features address signal availability; they should not be presented as evidence of GPS-free operation.

What current product descriptions establish
| Example | Published navigation description | What you should not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Worx Landroid Vision | Camera-based recognition of lawn boundaries and obstacles; marketed without boundary wire or antenna | Do not assume every regional model is entirely GPS-free |
| Husqvarna Automower models with AI vision | Camera supports EPOS satellite navigation and verifies that the mower is on grass during weak or lost satellite reception | Vision does not replace EPOS positioning |
| GARDENA smart SILENO sense | Vision AI plus GPS-RTK in the published comparison | It is not a GPS-free camera mower |
| EGO AURA-R2 | RTK, visual SLAM and visual-inertial odometry; a PATH IQ antenna provides local RTK correction | Camera navigation is part of a satellite-assisted system |
| STIGA wire-free systems | GNSS-RTK with AGS planning around predicted signal gaps | “Wire-free” does not mean “satellite-free” |
GARDENA’s comparison lists smart SILENO sense area options of 400 m² and 600 m². EGO’s AURA-R2 page names a 3,000 m² variant. These are manufacturer-recommended figures, not independent coverage tests, and they apply to the listed product configurations.
Obstacles: detection is not the same as guaranteed protection
Camera systems can detect and avoid many visible objects in real time, but no camera guarantees recognition of every hazard. Husqvarna’s guidance identifies several failure modes:
- Daytime-only vision models do not have vision support at night; other listed models use infrared for day and nighttime vision.
- Heavy rain, water on the lens or dirt can reduce visibility.
- Objects partly raised above the ground, such as some benches, can be misjudged.
- Objects hidden in tall grass may not be detected before the mower reaches them.
The practical response is to remove hazards, mark them with a stay-out zone where the model supports one, or install a physical barrier. Do not rely on a camera to protect children, pets or valuable objects; normal mower-safety practices and the manufacturer’s operating rules still apply.

Night operation
Whether vision works after dark is model-specific. Husqvarna distinguishes daytime-only camera systems from models that use infrared for both day and night. A specification that simply says “AI camera” is not enough to establish night capability.

Rain and a dirty lens
Rain can obscure the image, and dirt on the lens can have the same effect. Husqvarna support guidance describes model-dependent choices to pause or continue when visibility is reduced. Continuing may preserve the mowing schedule but increases dependence on other sensors and the mower’s safety boundaries; pausing is the conservative choice when the lawn contains uncertain hazards.
Complex boundaries
Vision is most useful when the grass edge is visible and stable. Sloped transitions, similar-colored gravel, tall grass covering an object, and edges that change after gardening work can make classification harder. A virtual-boundary mower has a different concern: satellite visibility and correction quality around trees, buildings and other obstructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Special case: a virtual boundary beside more lawn
Husqvarna gives a specific warning for a virtual boundary near another grassy area where satellite reception is poor. If the mower could continue beyond the intended perimeter because it cannot reliably determine its position, the guidance recommends a protective barrier at least 15 cm (6 in) high. This is a Husqvarna recommendation for that described condition, not a universal requirement for every brand or navigation system.

What setup usually involves
The exact app labels and sequence vary, but a wire-free installation normally follows this decision process:
- Identify the architecture. Read the model’s technical documentation and determine whether it uses vision alone, vision with GNSS/RTK, or vision as a satellite-signal aid.
- Inspect the lawn. Locate grass edges, paths, beds, drop-offs, ponds, play equipment, low branches and objects hidden by long grass.
- Prepare hazards. Remove loose objects, create supported stay-out zones and add physical barriers where a virtual boundary could be ambiguous or satellite reception is unreliable.
- Install required positioning hardware. RTK systems may need a reference antenna or correction service. EGO describes its PATH IQ antenna as a local RTK base station that communicates with satellites and refines positioning.
- Create or teach the working area. Depending on the product, this may mean app-based satellite mapping, guided boundary recording, or relying on visible lawn edges. Do not substitute instructions from another model.
- Test difficult sections at low risk. Observe the mower near transitions, narrow routes and obstacles before scheduling unattended operation.
- Maintain visibility and boundaries. Clean the camera lens as directed, keep grass from hiding hazards, and recheck the map after landscaping changes.
Privacy and onboard processing
Husqvarna states that AI image processing for its described technology occurs locally on the mower and that camera images are not stored, transmitted or shared. That is a manufacturer statement for the specified technology, not a blanket promise for every camera mower. Check the privacy policy and connectivity behavior of the exact product, especially if it uses a cloud account, remote viewing or diagnostics.
What the independent research does—and does not—show
A 2021 paper by Ali Taghibakhshi, Nathan Ogden and Matthew West describes camera-only local navigation and docking for a John Deere Tango mower. The authors report centimeter-level docking accuracy in hardware tests. That result concerns local navigation and docking; it is not evidence that a commercial mower can reliably mow an entire lawn using vision alone, in every lighting and weather condition, without GPS or other positioning aids.
Recommended Free Tools
No independent named statistic establishes a universal success rate for camera-based robot-mower navigation. Manufacturer specifications, area recommendations and feature claims should therefore be read as product-specific descriptions rather than industry-wide performance guarantees.
How to choose the right navigation type
- Choose a vision-led design when the lawn has clear, visible grass edges and you specifically want to avoid buried wire or a satellite-based map—but verify night, weather and obstacle behavior first.
- Choose vision plus RTK/GNSS when you need a mapped virtual boundary, large-area positioning or repeatable routes and can provide adequate satellite reception and any required correction hardware.
- Choose satellite positioning with vision fallback when your primary concern is keeping a mapped mower running through short signal interruptions rather than eliminating satellite navigation.
Before buying, ask the manufacturer or dealer six precise questions: Does this exact regional model use GNSS or RTK? How is the boundary created? Does the camera work at night, and does it use infrared? What happens in heavy rain or when the lens is dirty? Which obstacles require stay-out zones or barriers? What happens when satellite reception disappears?
