At checkout, Steam applies your Wallet balance first unless you choose another payment method before confirming the order. Wallet money is not cash: it cannot be withdrawn to a bank account or transferred to another Steam account.
What Steam Wallet funds can buy
A Steam Wallet balance is a payment method for Steam services and content, not a general-purpose balance. Valve’s Wallet terms describe these eligible uses:

- Downloadable content (DLC) listed for a Steam game.
- Items or in-game currency when the game supports Steam transactions.
- Eligible Community Market purchases.
- Steam gifts that you purchase to send to another user.

Valve states that Wallet funds may be used for any game on Steam or within a game that supports Steam transactions. That wording does not mean every listing, account, region, or game shop will accept the balance. The exact item page and signed-in checkout determine whether a transaction can be completed.

A Wallet balance cannot be used at an unrelated website, converted to cash, moved to another Steam account, or withdrawn to a bank. An external game store may sell content for a Steam title, but that separate checkout is not automatically a Steam Wallet transaction.

Before you spend the balance
Check the amount available
Sign in to the Steam client or the Steam website and open your account details. Your current Wallet amount appears in the account interface. If you recently added funds or received a refund, allow the account page to refresh before starting checkout.
Confirm the exact item and account
Check that you are signed in to the Steam account that holds the balance. For a game or DLC, read the store listing and verify the edition, platform requirements, language, and included content. DLC may require ownership of a particular base game, and some add-ons are sold in bundles or have separate restrictions.
Understand the transaction type
A Steam Store purchase, an in-game transaction, and a Community Market purchase follow different rules. The route matters for availability, refunds, and whether the transaction can be reversed, so identify it before paying.

Buy a game with Steam Wallet funds
- Open the Steam client or visit the Steam Store while signed in.
- Search for the game and open its store page.
- Select the correct edition or bundle, then choose the purchase option.
- Review the cart, taxes or regional pricing shown by Steam, and the final total.
- On the payment screen, confirm that Steam Wallet is selected. Wallet funds are normally applied first.
- If you want to use a card or another available method instead, open the payment-method selector on the purchase-confirmation screen and change it before submitting the order.
- Accept the applicable purchase terms and confirm the transaction.
- Wait for the confirmation page or receipt, then check your library and Wallet balance.
If the Wallet balance is less than the total and Steam offers another payment method, the confirmation screen may show a mixed payment. Check how much will come from the Wallet and how much will be charged elsewhere before accepting. Wallet funds are deducted only as part of the confirmed order. If the order is declined or cancelled, check the balance and purchase history before trying again so that you do not accidentally place a duplicate order.
Buy DLC or an expansion
DLC uses Steam Store checkout rather than a separate Wallet procedure.
- Open the base game’s Steam page or search directly for the DLC.
- Read the DLC description to confirm that it belongs to the game and edition you own.
- Click the purchase control and proceed to the cart or checkout screen.
- Review the item, price, and payment method. Steam applies Wallet funds first unless you change the method before confirmation.
- Complete the order and verify that the add-on appears in your library or in the game’s downloadable-content list.
Not every add-on is available to every account. A store listing can require the base game, exclude a region, or mark third-party DLC as nonrefundable. The signed-in checkout is the final indication that Steam permits the purchase.
Spend Wallet funds inside a game
When in-game purchases work
Wallet funds can buy an item or virtual currency only when the game has enabled Steam transactions. Steamworks microtransaction features let developers offer individual items or currency through a Steam-supported purchase flow. A game that merely runs through Steam does not automatically accept Wallet funds for every type of purchase.

Typical purchase steps
- Launch the game from your Steam library and sign in to the game service if it asks you to do so.
- Open the game’s shop, store, or currency screen.
- Select the item or currency package and open the game’s purchase confirmation.
- Check the displayed price, quantity, and account or character that will receive the purchase.
- Approve the Steam transaction window. If Wallet funds are available and supported, Steam uses them as the payment source.
- Return to the game and allow the inventory or currency balance to synchronize before starting another purchase.
The game’s own listing and purchase interface control what is offered. A free-to-play title may require Wallet funding for optional purchases while leaving play and progression available without spending. Do not assume that a purchase made through a game’s external website will use Steam Wallet funds; only the Steam-supported transaction flow does.

If a purchase window never appears, the item may be sold through a publisher’s separate account system rather than Steam. Check the game’s store page and support information instead of repeatedly clicking purchase. Never provide your Steam credentials to an external seller claiming to convert Wallet funds into game currency.
Use the Community Market
The Community Market is a Steam marketplace for eligible inventory items. You select a listing, confirm the price, and pay from your Steam Wallet.
- Open the Community Market from Steam’s Community menu.
- Search for the item and inspect the listing, quantity, and total price.
- Confirm that your account and the item meet Steam’s access and inventory restrictions.
- Place the order using the Wallet balance shown in the confirmation dialog.
- Check your inventory and purchase history after the order completes.
Market purchases are final: Steam states that completed purchases cannot be refunded or reversed. A balance received from selling an item also remains Steam Wallet value; it cannot be cashed out or sent to another Steam account. Market access and item eligibility can be restricted by account status, region, trade rules, or the individual inventory item.

Do not treat a pending listing as proof that the purchase succeeded; use the completed order record and inventory to verify it.
Gifts, subscriptions, and other Steam purchases
Steam’s Wallet terms also cover eligible subscriptions and other Steam content, and the Steam Subscriber Agreement describes certain hardware purchases. Availability is determined by the specific Steam listing and your account. A Wallet balance is therefore broader than a game-only coupon, but it is still limited to transactions Steam itself supports.
You may use Wallet funds to purchase eligible Steam gifts for another user. The recipient, region, gifting rules, and the item’s own restrictions still apply. Confirm the intended recipient before paying: a completed gift is a separate transaction from buying a game for your own library, and a gift may not be usable in every country or account configuration.
Choose or change the payment method before confirming
Steam’s checkout normally applies available Wallet funds first. This can reduce the amount charged to another method or pay the entire order. If you do not want to spend the balance, use the payment-method control on the purchase-confirmation screen and select an alternative before clicking the final confirmation button.
Do not rely on changing the method after the order is submitted. Once Steam confirms the purchase, the selected source and resulting charge are recorded in the transaction. For a mixed payment, verify the Wallet deduction and the remaining amount charged to the other method on the receipt.

Verify where the money went
After any purchase, verify both the item and the account balance:
- Open your account interface and check the updated Wallet balance.
- Open purchase history to see the item, date, payment source, and transaction status.
- For a game or DLC, check the library and the title’s downloadable-content panel.
- For an in-game purchase, restart or reconnect the game only after allowing the Steam transaction to finish, then check the game inventory or currency total.
- For a Market purchase, inspect Steam inventory and the completed order record.
If the balance changed but the item is missing, do not buy it again immediately. A pending transaction, delayed game synchronization, or a different signed-in account can explain the mismatch. Use the recorded order details when contacting Steam Support.

Refund rules for Wallet-funded purchases
Using Wallet funds does not create one universal refund rule. The item category controls the deadline and conditions. Valve’s Steam Refunds page, updated April 23, 2024, publishes the standard windows, but the notice attached to the specific transaction remains important. Submit a request through Steam Support and check the policy shown for that transaction.

Steam’s standard published condition is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. Exceptions can exist, but the standard test is not a guarantee that every title qualifies.
DLC
DLC generally follows a 14-day and under-two-hours framework. The add-on must not have been consumed, modified, or transferred. Steam can identify some third-party DLC as nonrefundable at the time of purchase, so read the notice before confirming.
In-game items and currency
For purchases in Valve-developed games, Steam says qualifying items may be refundable within 48 hours when they have not been consumed, modified, or transferred. A third-party developer can opt into the same arrangement, and Steam indicates that availability during purchase. If the item has already been used or moved, eligibility may be lost.
Added Wallet funds
Funds purchased to top up the Wallet may be refundable within 14 days when none of those funds have been used. Spending even part of a top-up can affect eligibility, so check the transaction history before requesting a refund.

Market transactions are excluded from normal reversals once completed. Confirm the listing and total before placing the order because an unwanted item cannot be returned through the standard refund process.

Fix a failed or blocked checkout
Try the other Steam interface
If checkout fails in the Steam client, try the Steam website. If the website fails, try the client. The two interfaces can expose different temporary errors or authentication states.
Remove VPN or proxy interference
Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily and retry from your normal connection. Location changes can conflict with regional pricing, account checks, or currency settings.
Check the currency and region
A currency mismatch can block a purchase. Confirm that Steam is displaying the expected currency for your account and location. Do not attempt to bypass regional rules by changing location; instead, contact Steam Support with the exact error message if the mismatch persists.
Check for a pending order
Open purchase history and Wallet balance before submitting another order. If the first attempt is pending, repeating it can create confusion about which order succeeded. Keep the order number, timestamp, item name, and exact error text for support.
Contact Steam Support with precise details
When self-service steps fail, provide the account’s purchase-history entry, the affected game or item, the payment route, currency shown, and the full error message. Avoid sending a second payment while support is investigating a pending or duplicated charge.
Important limits and account-safety checks
- Wallet funds have no value outside Steam and are not a bank balance.
- You cannot transfer Wallet funds to another Steam account or withdraw them as cash.
- You can use Wallet funds to purchase eligible Steam gifts, but the gift transaction still follows Steam’s gifting and regional restrictions.
- In-game support is title-specific; Steam ownership alone does not make every game shop Wallet-compatible.
- Community Market purchases are final, so inspect the exact item and price before confirming.
- Refund deadlines are measured against the relevant purchase and usage conditions, not simply against the date you notice a problem.
Protect the account that holds the balance. Review every confirmation screen, keep Steam Guard and account credentials secure, and treat unexpected Wallet deductions as an account-support issue rather than attempting to recover value through an unofficial transfer.
A practical decision checklist
Use this checklist immediately before spending:
- Is the purchase happening in the Steam Store, inside a Steam-supported game transaction, or on the Community Market?
- Does the listing or purchase window show that this account can buy the item?
- Is the item a game, DLC, in-game item, currency, or Market listing? The category determines the refund rules.
- Is Steam Wallet the intended payment source, or should you change it before confirmation?
- Have you checked the final price, currency, quantity, edition, and recipient?
- After confirmation, did you verify the Wallet balance, purchase history, and destination library or inventory?
Following those checks lets you use an existing Steam Wallet balance for the purchases Steam actually supports while avoiding the two most costly mistakes: confirming the wrong payment source and assuming a final transaction can be undone.
