Two cadmium sulfide (CdS) magic-size clusters can have essentially the same measured mass yet differ in structure. A 2018 study found that the forms called MSC-311 and MSC-322—named for their sharp optical absorption peaks—reversibly convert into one another as temperature changes. The result supports structural isomerism in these colloidal semiconductor clusters, not a claim that they are ordinary small molecules with fully solved atom-by-atom structures.
What the study found
Zhang and colleagues reported two CdS magic-size clusters with absorption peaks at 311 and 322 nanometers. Both produced mass-spectrometry signals near 5,160 daltons, indicating essentially the same measured cluster mass. Structural analyses nevertheless pointed to differences between the forms, so the authors identified them as structural isomers: forms with the same or very similar composition but different arrangements.

These are colloidal semiconductor nanocrystal clusters with ligand shells. The study’s central evidence does not provide an atom-by-atom solved structure for each form. “Inorganic isomerism” is therefore a useful shorthand for the reported mass-matched structural alternatives, rather than a claim that every atom’s position is known.

| Feature | MSC-311 | MSC-322 |
|---|---|---|
| Optical absorption peak used in the label | 311 nm | 322 nm |
| Measured cluster mass | Near 5,160 Da | Near 5,160 Da |
| Temperature favored in the reported incubation examples | Lower temperature; one example was 4 °C for 20 hours | Higher temperature; one example was 60 °C for 20 hours |
| Structural evidence | Similar short-range correlations to MSC-322, with differences at longer intra-cluster distances | Similar short-range correlations to MSC-311, with differences at longer intra-cluster distances |
| Conversion observed | Converted toward MSC-322 at elevated temperature | Returned toward MSC-311 at lower temperature |
The peak labels do not mean the clusters were shown to have different sizes. Their similar measured mass and the authors’ structural analyses instead support similar mass and size with differences in arrangement.

Why the evidence supports structural isomerism
Mass spectrometry showed a mass match
MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry gave signals near 5,160 Da for both cluster types. This supports the conclusion that the forms have essentially the same cluster mass; mass alone, however, cannot reveal whether their atoms are arranged differently.
Scattering analysis found both similarity and difference
X-ray total-scattering pair-distribution-function analysis showed similar short-range correlations, including peaks near 2.46 Å and 4.15 Å. The analysis also showed differences at longer intra-cluster distances. The authors interpreted that pattern as similar local structure but distinct structure farther across the clusters. Taken together with the mass evidence and other structural measurements, it supports their assignment of a pair of structural isomers.

Optical measurements tracked conversion
Time-resolved absorption measurements showed temperature-dependent changes between the MSC-311 and MSC-322 signatures. Isosbestic points in the spectra supported the authors’ interpretation that one form converted directly into the other without a detectable intermediate. The authors reported first-order unimolecular kinetics for both conversion directions.
How temperature favored each form
In the reported preparation, cadmium and sulfur precursors were heated to about 180 °C for approximately 20 minutes, forming an optically transparent immediate precursor mixture. After cooling, incubation at lower temperatures favored MSC-311, while higher temperatures favored MSC-322. One laboratory example used 4 °C for 20 hours to produce MSC-311 and 60 °C for 20 hours to favor MSC-322. Those are conditions from the authors’ procedure, not universal production instructions.

In conversion experiments, elevated temperature drove MSC-311 toward MSC-322, and lower temperature drove the reverse conversion. Under the example conditions reported, the low-temperature return to MSC-311 was slower than the forward conversion toward MSC-322.

The paper reports activation barriers for MSC-311-to-MSC-322 conversion of approximately 277 kJ mol−1 in toluene and 269 kJ mol−1 in cyclohexane. For comparison, it cites a bulk Cd–S bond dissociation energy of approximately 200 kJ mol−1 from earlier literature. That bulk value was not measured in the isomerization experiments.

The authors suggest that the high activation barriers may indicate Cd–S bond breaking in a rate-determining step. This remains a proposed explanation: the experiments did not directly observe individual bonds breaking, so they do not establish the mechanism at that level.

The study establishes a mass-matched pair of CdS cluster forms with structural differences and temperature-driven reversible conversion under the conditions examined. The authors suggest that structural changes could eventually help tune nanoscale properties such as bandgap or thermostability. They also mention information storage as a possible application, but did not demonstrate a working device or a practical storage technology.
