A browser-in-the-browser (BitB) attack imitates a separate sign-in window using ordinary content on a webpage. Its title bar, buttons, padlock and displayed address are drawn by the page—not proof that your browser opened the real service. If you enter a password into the imitation, the page can send it to an attacker.
What is a browser-in-the-browser (BitB) attack?
BitB is a phishing technique that makes a webpage look as though it has opened a separate browser window or authentication prompt. The attacker’s page creates the appearance with elements such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, sometimes including an embedded frame styled like a popup. The apparent window is still part of the webpage.

A typical lure promises access to content, a deal, a game or event, or warns that an account needs attention. After the visitor clicks a sign-in button, the page presents a branded imitation of a familiar identity provider. The fake form can collect submitted credentials. The Kaspersky explainer and a 2025 MADWeb paper describe how the technique uses page content to imitate browser features.

Why the fake address bar is not trustworthy
The URL shown inside the imitation is just text or graphics controlled by the page. A lock icon, logo, window controls and convincing title bar can be drawn there too. They do not show that the real browser has navigated to the displayed service.

Check the address in the browser’s actual interface, outside the supposed popup, and pay attention to the site that opened it. The outer page remains at its own address while the fake prompt can display a different one. The MADWeb paper notes that this spoofed URL bar can undermine the habit of checking a domain when users inspect the imitation instead of the real browser.
Why fake login windows look convincing
They borrow familiar sign-in patterns
People regularly sign in through windows branded with providers such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook or Apple. A carefully designed imitation can reproduce the colors, logo and controls people expect. Because these are real webpage elements, they can respond to clicks and look coherent without being browser interface.

They focus attention on the wrong place
Someone examining a small sign-in prompt may pay less attention to the unfamiliar site behind it. Urgent or threatening messages can add pressure. In a January 14, 2026 advisory, ThaiCERT described Facebook-focused lures impersonating legal or Meta support communications and claiming copyright violations or account suspension. It also reported the use of legitimate hosting infrastructure in the observed campaigns, so a familiar hosting provider alone is not a guarantee of safety.

The technique can lead to more than a fake password form
A BitB page can be one step in a longer social-engineering chain. Huntress’s incident account describes two August incidents in which fake Adobe-themed pages and a BitB-style interface led targets to a rogue ScreenConnect installer. The report excerpt does not specify the year of those incidents.

How can you tell if the login window is fake?
These checks can expose an imitation, but passing one does not prove a page is safe. Treat unexpected sign-in requests with suspicion and authenticate through the real service’s origin.
- Try moving it beyond the browser’s edge. A webpage element stays within the page; a genuine separate window can move independently. ThaiCERT recommends trying to drag the window outside the main browser area.
- Minimize the parent browser. If the supposed popup disappears with it, that is a clue it may be embedded page content.
- Inspect the real browser address. Ignore URL text, padlocks and controls drawn inside the prompt. Verify the address shown by the browser itself and whether the outer site is one you intended to visit.
- Use password-manager behavior as a warning signal. A domain-aware manager checks the actual page address, not the fake URL printed inside the imitation. If it does not offer the expected saved login, pause rather than typing the password manually.
- Consider how you arrived there. If a login request came from an unexpected email or message, close it and go to the service using a trusted bookmark or by typing its address.
How to reduce the risk and respond to a suspected BitB attack
Before you sign in
- Use a reputable password manager and unique passwords. Domain-aware autofill helps distinguish the real site address from an address merely displayed in page content.
- Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever the service supports it. It adds a verification step, but it does not make it safe to enter credentials into a fake page.
- For important accounts, consider a hardware security key if both the service and key support the same authentication standard. A compatible FIDO2/U2F key is an additional option, not a universal fix for every phishing scenario. Check current service support and the key’s specifications before choosing one. Kaspersky’s guidance names YubiKey as an example.
If you entered credentials or downloaded a file
- Reach the real service through a clean route, such as its trusted bookmark or a manually entered address, and change the exposed password.
- Revoke unfamiliar or suspicious sessions if the service offers session controls.
- Review account recovery details and MFA settings for changes you did not make.
- If the page prompted you to download software, do not run the file. Contact the organization’s security team or a support channel you independently know to be legitimate.
What the available studies do—and do not—show
A 2025 MADWeb paper reports that its BitD prototype detected all 64 BitB proof-of-concept samples the authors gathered from GitHub and a real-world campaign. That is a bounded evaluation of those samples, not a detection guarantee for every BitB page or a measure of how common attacks are.

A Microsoft Research summary, “An Evaluation of Extended Validation and Picture-in-Picture Phishing Attacks”, reports that 27 users each classified 12 websites and that picture-in-picture attacks showing a fake browser window performed as well as the best other phishing technique tested. The opened summary does not state a publication year, and the study predates modern BitB attacks. Its result is historical context about fake-window deception, not a current BitB effectiveness estimate. The cited material does not establish a reliable BitB-specific prevalence or aggregate-loss figure.
