Browser-based file tools can process a selected document on your device: the page reads it through the browser’s File API, runs the operation with JavaScript or WebAssembly, then offers the result for download. But “browser-based” does not automatically mean “nothing gets uploaded.” Whether a file stays local depends on the specific tool and feature, so treat that as a claim to verify—not a guarantee.
How a browser-based file tool processes a file
- You select or drop a file. The browser makes user-provided files available to the page through a file input or drag-and-drop. The application receives File objects that expose file information and allow it to read the contents. As MDN puts it, “The File API enables web applications to access files and their contents.” MDN’s File API reference was last modified April 10, 2025.
- The page reads and processes the data. JavaScript can use browser APIs to read and manipulate file data. For computation-heavy tasks, the page may also use WebAssembly code—for example, a compiled codec or other processing routine. JavaScript and WebAssembly can work together.
- The page prepares an output. A client-side tool can represent the result as file-like data and offer it for download. The document’s contents do not need to go to a processing server for this workflow to work.
That last point describes what is technically possible, not what every site does. A page may still send other network requests, and a particular feature may rely on a remote service.

Where WebAssembly fits—and what it does not guarantee
WebAssembly is a bytecode format that can be produced from languages such as C, C++ and Rust. It runs in the browser alongside JavaScript and is designed to support computationally intensive applications at near-native speed. This can make existing codecs and other demanding routines practical in a web page. JavaScript remains useful for application logic and browser APIs; WebAssembly complements it rather than replacing it. See MDN’s WebAssembly concepts guide.
WebAssembly is not a privacy feature. Its browser sandbox and security policies do not prove that a specific site never transmits file contents. The key question is whether the selected file—or data derived from it—is sent outside your device during the operation you intend to use.

How to check whether a particular tool sends your file
Inspect requests during a test
- Open the tool’s page and your browser’s developer tools.
- Choose the Network panel, then select a harmless test file and run the operation.
- Look for requests to processing endpoints and check whether file contents appear to be sent. Network activity may also include page code, analytics, or other resources, so a request alone does not establish that the document was uploaded.
Try the operation offline after loading
Load the page while connected, then disconnect the network and try the same operation. If it works, that is evidence that the observed run did not need a live connection after the page loaded. It cannot show what was transmitted before you disconnected, or account for every possible code path or feature.
ImagePDF.Tools recommends network inspection and an offline-after-load check on its privacy page. Those are practical checks, not an independent security audit; the site’s own privacy statements remain vendor claims.

What to verify before using a tool for sensitive files
- Check the exact feature. A service’s broad local-processing claim may not apply to every operation.
- Review its technical and privacy documentation. Check for exceptions, remote processing, and code or models loaded from other hosts.
- Consider self-hosting or an offline option. These may be appropriate when the document is especially sensitive, but the implementation still matters.
- Use your own test carefully. Network and offline checks describe the run you observed; they are not proof about all requests, all code paths, or earlier activity.
BentoPDF describes its PDF tools as browser-local and says self-hosting, including offline OCR assets, is an option in its documentation. PDFPrivy likewise describes a local workflow in which the browser reads document bytes, processes them in-page, and returns a download in How PDFPrivy works. These examples illustrate the approach; their privacy descriptions are vendor claims, not independent verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe useful distinction: local processing versus network activity
A file can be processed locally while the page still makes network requests—for example, to load its application code or other resources. Conversely, the fact that a page uses WebAssembly says how some computation may run, not whether the service sends your file to a server. Assess the actual service and operation rather than inferring privacy from the technology label.
