How Boundary-Wire-Free Robot Mowers Navigate and Avoid Obstacles

Boundary-wire-free mowers use virtual maps and positioning systems to stay on course, while separate sensors detect nearby obstacles. Here’s how the technologies work and what to check for your lawn.

Boundary-wire-free robot mowers use a virtual map or boundary—usually set in a manufacturer’s app—instead of following a buried perimeter wire. Satellite positioning, sometimes improved with RTK-GNSS correction data, helps the mower locate itself and follow that map. Separate onboard sensors, such as cameras, LiDAR, or radar, help detect nearby obstacles. The exact setup and performance vary by model.

How does a robot mower work without a boundary wire?

You define the lawn in an app, typically by mapping its perimeter and adding no-go zones. The mower then uses its navigation system to estimate its position and work within those virtual boundaries. Husqvarna describes its EPOS system as using high-precision RTK-GNSS satellite signals to create virtual boundaries. Other manufacturers may use different combinations of positioning and mapping technology; “wire-free” does not mean every mower navigates in the same way. Husqvarna’s EPOS overview and ECOVACS’s GOAT product information describe examples.

RTK-GNSS is satellite positioning enhanced with correction data. How a mower receives those corrections depends on the system: a manufacturer may use a local reference station, a network or cloud service, or another arrangement. A local antenna is therefore not a universal requirement. Check the model’s setup instructions and whether its correction service covers your area before buying. Husqvarna outlines different correction delivery options in its Australian RTK FAQ.

Manufacturer figures are system-specific

Husqvarna says its EPOS RS 4G reference station has a range of up to 25 km and typically provides 1–2 cm accuracy within 10 km; the same page gives typical accuracy of 1–6 cm for EPOS correction delivered through its cloud. It also lists up to 500 m range and typical accuracy of 1–2 cm for the RS5 reference station. ECOVACS says the GOAT O1000 RTK receives signals from up to 45 satellites and provides 0.8-inch positioning precision. These are manufacturer claims for named systems, not independent, directly comparable results or guaranteed accuracy across all lawns. The manufacturers’ pages do not state a publication year for these figures. Husqvarna EPOS details; ECOVACS GOAT details.

What happens when satellite signals are blocked?

Trees and buildings can obstruct or weaken satellite reception, which may affect a mower that relies on satellite positioning. The fallback is model-specific. Kress says its mowers use inertial navigation and odometry when satellite signals are blocked, then return to satellite positioning when reception improves. It also notes that inertial navigation can accumulate errors over time. Husqvarna says a physical support wire may be used in areas with poor satellite coverage. Neither example establishes that every wire-free mower can navigate reliably in every signal shadow; check what the specific model does when positioning degrades. Kress navigation information; Husqvarna EPOS overview.

How does a wire-free robotic mower handle obstacles?

Obstacle detection is a separate job from locating the lawn boundary. The virtual map tells the mower where it should operate; local sensors and software help it respond to objects in its path. Depending on the model, those sensors may include cameras with AI vision, LiDAR, time-of-flight (ToF), radar, infrared or ultrasonic sensors, and contact sensors.

Does a robot mower with a camera work at night?

It depends on the model and sensor system. Husqvarna says camera performance can be affected by a covered or dirty lens, heavy rain, or darkness, and that daylight vision features on its 300-series mowers do not work at night. Other systems, including those using different sensor types, may behave differently. Check the manufacturer’s stated operating conditions rather than assuming that a camera-equipped mower can detect obstacles equally well in every light or weather condition. What to check before choosing a wire-free mower

Compare the navigation and sensing setup against your lawn’s layout and conditions, not just a quoted accuracy or obstacle count.

  • Positioning and correction: Find out whether the mower uses RTK-GNSS, a local reference station, network or cloud corrections, or another approach—and whether your location is covered.
  • Signal resilience: Look for a documented response to blocked satellite signals. Check whether a support wire is an option if trees or buildings create persistent coverage problems.
  • Obstacle sensors and limits: Identify the sensors fitted to the exact model and the manufacturer’s stated detection conditions, including lighting, rain, and lens cleanliness where cameras are used.
  • Mapping and controls: Confirm how app-based lawn boundaries and no-go zones are created, and whether the setup suits the shape and size of your lawn.
  • Availability and fit: Confirm regional availability, lawn capacity, correction-service requirements, and the features included in the specific model and edition.

Manufacturer pages explain how their own systems are designed and state their capabilities; they do not establish a neutral, market-wide ranking of navigation accuracy or obstacle avoidance.
