Xbox Series X Disc Drive vs. Xbox Series S: What You Can Play

A disc-drive Xbox Series X can play supported physical Xbox games; Xbox Series S cannot play discs at all. Both consoles play supported digital games, but the Series X’s disc capability depends on buying a model with an optical drive and on the game being compatible.

Can Xbox Series X and Series S play the same discs?

No. A drive-equipped Series X can use supported physical game discs. Series S is all-digital, and Xbox states: “Disc-based games are not supported.” That applies to Series S games and disc-based backward-compatible titles, too.

Also check which Series X you are buying. Xbox lists a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive on the Carbon Black and 2TB Galaxy Black models, but also sells a 1TB Robot White all-digital Series X. The Series X name by itself does not guarantee a disc drive. See Xbox’s Series X model listings before buying.

What games can you play on each console?

Game type Series X with disc drive Series S
Physical discs Supported game discs can be used; some titles require the disc to remain inserted to play. Not supported.
Digital games Supported digital games. Supported digital games; the console is all-digital.
Backward-compatible games Select Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles, in digital or supported disc form. Eligible digital titles from the supported catalog; no disc-based titles.

Compatibility is selective, not universal. Xbox describes Series X as supporting thousands of games across four Xbox generations, while its backward-compatible games catalog identifies supported Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games. Check the title before counting on an older disc working.

How disc games work on Series X

A compatible disc can be the license needed to play, but it may not contain all the game data. For supported backward-compatible disc games, Xbox says the game downloads or installs to the console, and the disc must stay in the drive while you play. A disc-owning Series S user cannot use this route because the console has no optical drive.

Can you play Xbox One games on Xbox Series X or Series S?

Many Xbox One games are supported, but not every title is guaranteed to work. Both consoles can play supported digital Xbox One games. A disc-drive Series X can also play supported Xbox One discs; Series S cannot. For an older game, confirm it appears in Xbox’s compatibility information rather than assuming that its generation makes it compatible.

Does the 2026 disc-to-digital feature let Series S play discs?

No. In an August 26, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement, Microsoft described a separate feature that lets players claim a digital entitlement for most supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc games by inserting the disc into an Xbox One or Series X and launching the game. The announcement said the feature was entering Insider testing, starting with thousands of titles, with more to be added over time. It is not a way to insert or read a disc on Series S, and it does not establish that every disc qualifies or that the feature is generally available to all players.

What else differs between Series X and Series S?

Disc support is the main distinction for physical-game owners, but the consoles also have different listed display targets and storage configurations. Xbox describes Series X as native 4K and Series S as designed for 1440p with the ability to upscale to 4K. These are product specifications, not a promise that every game renders at that resolution. Xbox lists Series X storage options of 1TB and 2TB and Series S options of 512GB and 1TB. Model availability can vary by market. See Xbox’s Series S specifications and its console comparison.

Which console should disc owners choose?

  • Choose a Series X with a drive if you want to use supported physical games. Confirm the exact edition is Carbon Black or 2TB Galaxy Black, rather than the all-digital Robot White model.
  • Choose Series S if your games are digital or you plan to buy digitally. Existing physical discs will not work on it.
  • Check older games individually against Xbox’s supported catalog, especially before buying a console specifically for a particular Xbox, Xbox 360, or Xbox One disc.
