Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Bot detection estimates whether a request is automated by combining signals such as network reputation, request patterns, session behavior, endpoint context, and browser checks. That estimate is not the same as a decision: your site must choose whether to allow, log, challenge, rate-limit, delay, or block the request. To test your defenses safely, define the routes and risks you own, establish a baseline, send small amounts of labeled test traffic, and verify that legitimate users and automation still work before enforcing rules.
What bot detection does—and what it does not mean
A bot is software making requests automatically; automation alone does not make it harmful. Search crawlers, uptime monitors, accessibility tools, mobile apps, partner integrations, and API clients may all be legitimate. The defensive goal is to identify harmful behavior without breaking traffic the site expects.

OWASP identifies abuse patterns including credential stuffing, scraping, inventory hoarding, fake account creation, card testing, fake reviews, and click fraud. The risk depends on what a particular route does: repeated login attempts threaten accounts, while automated catalog access may indicate scraping or inventory abuse. A useful policy is therefore based on endpoint risk, not a single site-wide definition of “bot.” OWASP’s Bot Management and Anti-Automation Cheat Sheet recommends layered controls at the edge, application, and business-logic layers.

How bot detection estimates automation
Detection systems combine request signals and surrounding context to estimate whether activity is automated. No individual signal proves that a request is malicious, and the signals and visibility available vary by provider.
- Network and IP reputation: whether an address or network has a history or pattern associated with automation.
- Headers and request fingerprints: whether request properties resemble expected browsers or known automation patterns.
- Rate and velocity: how quickly requests recur, and whether their volume is unusual for the route, session, or identity.
- Session and identity behavior: repeated failures, account creation patterns, or activity that differs from normal use.
- Endpoint context: whether the requested action is sensitive and whether this client is expected to perform it.
- Browser-side checks and known signatures: results from scripts or challenges, plus matches against known automated behavior.
Prefer limits keyed to meaningful dimensions—such as endpoint, session, or authenticated identity—rather than relying only on IP address. Shared networks can put many ordinary users behind one address, while an abusive client may distribute requests across addresses. OWASP recommends layered controls and proportional responses rather than treating one indicator as conclusive.
Scores belong to the product that defines them
Cloudflare’s Enterprise Bot Management assigns a score from 1 to 99 to each request; lower scores indicate more automated traffic. Its published templates treat score 1 as definite automation and scores 2–29 as likely automation, while excluding verified bots and static resources. Those ranges describe Cloudflare’s product, not a universal bot-detection scale. Cloudflare documents its bot score and score bands; do not transplant those thresholds to another system as though they mean the same thing.
Browser checks are evidence, not proof
Cloudflare JavaScript Detections illustrates the limits of client-side checks: its script is injected into HTML responses, excludes AJAX calls, and places a result in a cookie for later rules. A site must create a separate rule to act on a failed result. Cloudflare cautions against applying that rule to the first request or to traffic that does not expect browser JavaScript; disabled JavaScript or network problems can also explain a failure. Cloudflare’s JavaScript Detections documentation describes those constraints.

Choose a response that matches confidence and risk
Detection estimates automation; policy determines what happens next. A practical range of actions is:
- Allow: accept expected traffic, including verified or explicitly approved clients.
- Log or monitor: record a match without changing the user’s experience while validating a rule.
- Challenge: ask for an additional check when the risk warrants friction and the client can complete it.
- Rate-limit or delay: constrain repeated activity where volume or speed is the concern.
- Block: reject traffic when evidence and impact justify the strongest action.
Start with less disruptive measures when confidence is low; reserve hard blocks for high-confidence abuse. Consider accessibility and privacy when choosing browser challenges: a challenge may obstruct people using assistive technology, and client-side signals raise questions about collection and retention. Make sure the response actually protects the business action—for example, a login control should address account abuse rather than only making page loads slower.
Map routes to threats before testing
Write down the routes in scope, what abuse looks like on each, which legitimate clients must continue to work, and who can change or roll back the controls. Common examples include:
Rank #3
| Route or function | Risk to consider | Known-good traffic to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Login | Credential stuffing and repeated account access attempts | Ordinary browsers, mobile apps, approved identity integrations |
| Signup | Fake account creation | People using supported browsers and accessibility tools |
| Search or catalog | Scraping or inventory hoarding | Search crawlers and normal browsing |
| Checkout | Scalping or card testing | Customers and payment flows |
| Public API | Excessive automated requests or misuse | Partner clients, mobile apps, and documented integrations |
These are starting points, not a universal policy. A site’s actual business logic and expected clients determine which controls are appropriate.
Test bot defenses safely, step by step
- Set authorization and scope. Prefer staging. For production, get the operator’s approval for the exact routes and time window. Test only systems and data you control; do not load-test a third-party site, probe other people’s accounts, or evade another party’s controls.
- Record a baseline. Before changing rules, note normal traffic volume, status codes, route distribution, failed logins, challenge rates, and the known crawler, monitor, API, and mobile traffic that should keep working. Cloudflare recommends using bot analytics and Security Events to see which pages bots target and how rules match; detailed analytics availability depends on plan. Cloudflare’s bot mitigation guidance describes reviewing traffic and tuning rules.
- Send labeled, low-volume test requests. Use a script or browser automation clearly identified as a test against only the approved routes. Begin with a few requests at a human-like interval. Then change one property at a time, such as request rate, a missing header, a known test user-agent, or repeated failed logins with a dedicated test account. These are practical test suggestions, not vendor-prescribed limits. Never use real credentials or scale beyond the agreed safe threshold.
- Observe before enforcing. If your system offers a log, monitor, or preview action, use it first. Check whether the intended request matched, what else matched, the event details, response status, challenge display, errors, and latency. Cloudflare advises reviewing Security Events and adjusting thresholds to avoid catching legitimate users.
- Verify known-good clients. Exercise ordinary browser journeys and the legitimate automation relevant to your site: verified search crawlers, uptime monitors, partner APIs, mobile clients, and accessibility software. Add narrowly scoped exceptions for verified bots, internal APIs, integrations, and monitoring tools before deploying broad blocking rules.
- Tune one control at a time. Compare whether the test behavior is detected, how often legitimate traffic is caught, challenge completion, latency, and business outcomes. Use a graduated response rather than converting every match directly into a block.
- Keep a rollback path. Save the previous configuration, identify who can disable a rule, and define how to respond if legitimate traffic fails. Cloudflare documents disabling Bot Fight Mode when it causes application traffic problems.
Choosing a hosted bot-protection approach
Compare options on practical control and operational fit, not just whether they advertise bot detection.
- Visibility: Can you inspect events, scores, reasons, and useful analytics?
- Scope: Does protection apply to a whole domain, or can you target specific routes and behaviors?
- Actions: Can you monitor, allow, challenge, rate-limit, or block as appropriate?
- Legitimate-client handling: Can you preserve verified crawlers, APIs, monitoring, and mobile traffic with explicit exceptions?
- Operational burden: How much tuning, false-positive review, and log integration will your team need?
- Privacy and accessibility: What client signals are collected and retained, and can people using assistive technology complete challenges?
- Deployment constraints: Which plan or edge provider is required, and how might rules affect cached or static content?
Cloudflare’s documentation provides one concrete example of the trade-off: Bot Fight Mode is free and simple but applies across a domain and can challenge API or mobile traffic; Enterprise Bot Management exposes more granular scoring and policy controls. Confirm current plan details with the provider before buying. Bot Fight Mode documentation and Bot Management documentation describe those product distinctions.

If your testing workflow needs screenshots of pages before and after a rule or challenge, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one GET request. Its screenshot output is not a bot-detection verdict: use your protection platform’s events and rules to evaluate bot controls.
ScreenshotNeo accepts and removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step optional. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response behavior.

Common testing problems and fixes
- A test request is allowed unexpectedly: check whether the rule covers the route and action being tested, whether the request matches the expected condition, and whether a higher-priority allow or exception rule applies. Review the event or match log before tightening a threshold.
- Ordinary users or APIs are challenged: identify the exact route and client in event records, then use a narrow exception for verified traffic or change the rule scope. Avoid a domain-wide action if the problem is limited to an API or mobile route.
- A JavaScript check fails for a normal client: confirm that the client requested HTML and supports JavaScript, and that the request is not an AJAX call or a first request for which the check is not expected. A failed result can also reflect disabled JavaScript or network trouble.
- Traffic changes make results hard to interpret: return to a baseline, use a labeled test client, and vary one behavior at a time. Avoid simultaneous threshold and exception changes.
- A production rule disrupts traffic: use the rollback owner and saved configuration to disable or narrow the rule, then inspect affected events before re-enabling enforcement. Cloudflare specifically documents disabling Bot Fight Mode if application traffic is affected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all bots bad?
No. Search crawlers, monitoring systems, accessibility tools, APIs, and mobile clients can be legitimate. The right policy depends on the route, behavior, and clients your site expects.
Does a failed JavaScript detection prove a visitor is a bot?
No. Disabled JavaScript, network problems, or an unsupported request context can produce a failed result. Treat it as one signal, not proof.
