A Bluetooth speaker’s advertised battery life is a conditional “up to” estimate, not a promise of the same runtime for every listener. An IP water-resistance label is also limited: IP67 includes a dust-protection rating, while IPX7 does not specify one, and a stated immersion test applies only under its described conditions. To choose confidently, compare the exact model’s runtime claim and test details with your likely volume, setting, and exposure.
What a speaker’s battery-life number tells you
A runtime figure such as “up to 12 hours” describes a manufacturer’s maximum claim under selected conditions. It does not mean every owner will get that many hours of continuous playback. Volume, music content, temperature, settings, and use can affect the result; battery capacity can also decline with age and use.

That distinction matters when comparing products. A higher advertised number is not proof that one speaker lasts longer than another under the same conditions. Unless manufacturers disclose comparable test methods—or an independent controlled test measures them side by side—their headline figures are not a head-to-head result.

Why volume and content change runtime
Bose says its SoundLink Flex is rated for up to 12 hours based on Spotify Global Top 50 music played at 65% volume in typical indoor temperatures. Bose also says content, volume, and surrounding temperature can affect battery performance. Listening below 50% volume extends battery life, while playing above 65% reduces it faster, according to the same product information.

This is a useful example of what to look for in any specification: the claimed duration is accompanied by a playback level, content, and temperature context. Those details help you judge whether the figure resembles your use. If you usually listen loudly, use a speaker outdoors in temperature conditions unlike a typical indoor setting, or keep sound features enabled, do not assume the headline runtime will match your experience. The available Bose information identifies content, volume, and surrounding temperature as factors; it does not give a specific number of hours for every alternative setting.
Settings, environment, and battery age
Sony advertises up to 25 hours for the SRS-XG300. It cautions that actual performance varies with settings, environmental conditions, and usage, and that battery capacity decreases over time and use. The 25-hour figure is therefore a manufacturer ceiling-style claim, not a guaranteed duration for every owner or a promise that a used speaker will retain its original capacity.
For another product, check whether the maker explains the conditions behind its number. If it does not state the playback level, music or content, relevant sound or lighting modes, and environmental conditions, treat those test details as undisclosed. Do not fill in missing information by assuming the maker used the same settings as another brand.

How IPX7 differs from IP67
The letters and digits in an IP label convey different information. In the examples covered by the manufacturer explanations here, the first digit is the dust-protection rating when present, and the second digit describes water protection. An X means a digit is not specified in that position. That is why IP67 and IPX7 are not interchangeable: IP67 includes a stated dust-protection digit, while IPX7 leaves the dust-protection position unspecified.
JBL Support explicitly distinguishes IP67 from IPX7 and describes IP67 as providing dust resistance as well as water protection. Its explanation gives the water condition as submersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The label alone should not be read as proof of protection against every kind of exposure or as permission to use a speaker beyond the stated test limits.
These examples explain the practical distinction rather than every possible IP code. The manufacturer explanations cited here do not establish a complete standards chart for every rating, so avoid inferring more than the particular model’s documentation says.

What “1 meter for up to 30 minutes” means
A stated immersion depth and duration describe a bounded test condition, not a universal promise that a speaker is safe at greater depths, for longer periods, in every liquid, or after damage. For the SRS-XG300, Sony ties its water specification to IEC 60529 and describes a gentle submersion test at 1 meter for 30 minutes. Sony says all ports and covers must be firmly closed for its IP protection description; it also describes a separate dust test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That cover requirement is part of the practical meaning of the rating. If a model’s documentation says its ports or covers must be secured, leaving one open means the specified condition has not been met. Look up instructions for the exact model rather than assuming that another speaker with a similar name or from the same company uses the same design or procedure.
A rating also cannot establish how well an individual speaker will resist water after its seals have aged or the device has been damaged. Treat the test as information about the stated condition, not an invitation to deliberately immerse a speaker to see whether it survives. For splashes or outdoor use, the relevant question is whether the exact model’s rating and operating instructions cover the exposure you expect—not whether a broad “waterproof” label sounds reassuring.

How to compare runtime and protection before buying
- Find the exact model’s specifications. Check the manufacturer’s page or instructions for the precise model name. Do not infer a rating or runtime from a related model or a brand’s general reputation.
- Read the conditions behind the runtime claim. Note the stated volume, content, temperature, and settings. If the manufacturer does not provide a condition, mark it as undisclosed rather than assuming it matches another speaker’s test.
- Match the claim to your listening pattern. Consider whether you normally listen quietly or loudly and whether your intended setting differs from the conditions the maker describes. Use the headline figure as a point of comparison, not a guarantee.
- Read the full IP label. Distinguish IP67 from IPX7: IP67 includes a specified dust-protection digit, while IPX7 does not specify a dust digit. Then check the manufacturer’s explanation of the water condition for the particular model.
- Check operating conditions for water exposure. Look for requirements such as securing port covers and for limits on depth or duration. A stated test condition does not prove resistance beyond those limits.
- Choose for the environment you actually face. Poolside splashes, dusty outdoor conditions, and carrying a speaker are different considerations. Use the exact model’s documented features to decide which matter, rather than treating a single rating or runtime number as a complete measure of suitability.
Examples: why the model matters
Manufacturer specifications illustrate both the usefulness and the limits of headline numbers. Bose lists the SoundLink Flex at up to 12 hours and identifies it as IP67-rated; its stated runtime conditions are Spotify Global Top 50 music at 65% volume and typical indoor temperatures. Sony lists the SRS-XG300 at up to 25 hours and IP67, while qualifying runtime based on settings, environment, and use. These figures do not establish that the Sony lasts longer under identical playback conditions: the available descriptions do not provide a controlled cross-brand comparison.
JBL’s own lineup comparison shows why brand-level assumptions are unreliable. It lists the Flip 6 at up to 12 hours with IPX7 and the Charge 5 at 20 hours with IP67. Those are model-specific figures from a manufacturer comparison page, not independent evidence that both playtimes were measured under equal conditions. The different ratings also show that a company’s products need not share one water-and-dust specification.
| Model or example | Advertised battery life | Stated runtime context | Published protection detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bose SoundLink Flex | Up to 12 hours | Spotify Global Top 50 music at 65% volume and typical indoor temperatures; Bose says content, volume, and surrounding temperature affect performance. | IP67. |
| Sony SRS-XG300 | Up to 25 hours | Sony says performance varies with settings, environmental conditions, and usage, and capacity decreases over time and use. | IP67; Sony describes a gentle 1-meter, 30-minute submersion test with all ports and covers firmly closed. |
| JBL Flip 6 | Up to 12 hours | Test conditions are not stated in the cited lineup comparison. | IPX7. |
| JBL Charge 5 | 20 hours | Test conditions are not stated in the cited lineup comparison. | IP67. |
The values in this table are manufacturer statements, not independently verified comparative measurements. The JBL comparison page does not state runtime test conditions in the cited information, so its figures should not be treated as method-matched to Bose’s or Sony’s claims.
Quick Recap
Common misreadings to avoid
- Reading “up to” as a guaranteed session length. It is a maximum-style claim tied to manufacturer conditions; actual use can differ.
- Assuming two advertised runtimes were measured alike. Unless comparable methods are disclosed, the figures cannot establish which product will last longer for your listening habits.
- Treating IPX7 and IP67 as identical. IP67 includes a dust-protection digit; IPX7 does not specify one.
- Extending a test beyond its stated limits. A description of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes does not establish a safe depth, duration, or liquid beyond that test condition.
- Ignoring covers or the exact model. A rating can depend on correctly closed ports and covers, and specifications can vary between models in the same lineup.
