Bluetooth proximity locking uses a nearby phone’s wireless signal and connection status to trigger an action, but a Bluetooth disconnect does not have one universal meaning: a particular lock may wait, reconnect, lock, or do nothing, depending on its design and settings. Signal strength can suggest that a phone is nearby; it cannot establish an exact distance.
How Bluetooth proximity locking works
A phone and lock communicate over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Depending on the product, the system may keep a connection active, reconnect automatically, or detect the phone broadcasting nearby. The lock’s software then decides whether the connection state or signal strength is enough to trigger an action.

RSSI is a clue, not a distance reading
RSSI—received signal strength indicator—is a measure of radio signal strength, expressed in decibels. Apple’s Core Bluetooth documentation says, “You can use a connected peripheral’s RSSI property to determine the peripheral’s proximity.” That makes RSSI useful as a proximity clue, not as a precise measurement in meters. The lock or app must choose how to interpret the reading.
Products choose their own rules
For example, Tuya’s BLE HID implementation uses automatic reconnection and RSSI readings for proximity-based unlocking, and describes device-identity and encrypted-command measures. That is one implementation, not a rule that every Bluetooth lock follows. Microsoft’s Bluetooth Proximity Profile offers another illustration: a Proximity Monitor watches RSSI to calculate signal path loss. In either case, the software’s thresholds and response determine what happens.

What a Bluetooth disconnect does—and does not—mean
A disconnect means the radio link or app-level connection is no longer active. It does not, by itself, encode a universal instruction to lock or unlock. A lock may react to the connection-loss event, wait for a timeout, try to reconnect, check another signal-strength reading, or require a separate condition. The exact response is product-specific.
Do not assume auto-lock and auto-unlock are the same feature. A maker may configure them separately, and a lock can have an auto-lock timer that operates independently of the phone’s Bluetooth connection.

A platform example—not a door-lock rule
Microsoft’s Windows Dynamic Lock demonstrates how conditional proximity behavior can be: “The dynamic lock feature only locks the device if the Bluetooth signal falls and the system is idle.” That describes a Windows PC, not a smart lock. It shows why a dropped signal may be only one condition among several.

Why there is no dependable universal range
There is no universal Bluetooth-lock range or exact conversion from RSSI to distance established by the sources cited here. In Android’s Extend Unlock trusted-device context, Google says Bluetooth connectivity range varies by phone, Bluetooth device, and environment, and may be up to 100 meters. That is not a range specification for smart locks; it illustrates why Bluetooth does not create a reliable doorway boundary.

Walls, placement, the phone, the lock, and the software’s chosen threshold can all affect when a device appears near enough. A signal that weakens or disappears should therefore be treated as an input to a product’s rules, not proof that the phone crossed a particular distance.
What to check in your lock’s manual or app
Before relying on proximity behavior, find the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact model and check these details:

- Whether losing Bluetooth connection triggers locking, unlocking, or neither.
- Any delay, timeout, repeated-signal check, or reconnection attempt before an action.
- Whether the app must be allowed to run in the background, and which phone operating-system settings it needs.
- What happens if the phone battery dies, the app is unavailable, or Bluetooth is turned off.
- Whether auto-lock is a separate setting from auto-unlock.
- How to enter if the phone or Bluetooth connection fails, such as a keypad, physical key, or another documented backup method.
For a comparison between lock models, use each maker’s current documentation to compare trigger type (RSSI, connection state, or both), lock and unlock settings, delays and reconnection behavior, phone and app requirements, internet dependence, and backup access. These features should not be inferred from the phrase “Bluetooth smart lock.”

A nearby Bluetooth device is not the same as verified physical presence at a precise distance. Google warns in its Android Extend Unlock guidance that a trusted-device connection can be imitated and that a device could remain accessible if taken while near its trusted device. Android’s BLE overview also advises application-layer security for sensitive data. Those are security cautions, not an evaluation of every door lock.

A 2025 USENIX Workshop on Offensive Technologies paper analyzed the Master Lock Bluetooth Deadbolt D1000. Its findings apply to that model and study; they do not establish that all Bluetooth locks share the same vulnerability. Separately, NIST’s Mobile Threat Catalogue identifies leaving a mobile device unattended and unlocked as a physical-access risk, and lists locking on loss of proximity to an attended trusted device as a possible countermeasure. That is general mobile-device guidance, not a smart-lock certification.
