Compare traditional search rankings and AI-answer visibility as separate outcomes, not as one score. Track search impressions, clicks, click-through rate (CTR), and average position alongside platform-specific AI impressions, brand mentions, and citations. Keep the platform, query, market, date, and measurement method attached to every result: a mention is not a link, a citation is not a click, and an AI citation share is not a search rank.

What each visibility metric actually measures

“Visibility” can mean a result appeared, a person clicked it, a brand was named in an answer, or a site was cited as a source. Those are related signals, but they are not interchangeable. Decide which outcome you want to measure before comparing numbers.

Measure What it tells you Useful source Main limitation
Traditional impressions How often a site result was shown under the platform’s counting rules. Google Search Console Performance report Exposure does not establish a click or conversion.
Clicks and CTR Clicks from search, and clicks relative to impressions. Google Search Console Performance report Does not capture exposure that did not lead to a click.
Average position Approximate relative placement, averaged over observed impressions. Google Search Console Performance report It is an aggregate, not a fixed rank for every query or results layout.
Google AI-feature impressions Reported exposure for URLs appearing in supported Google Search AI features. Search Console Generative AI performance report Platform-specific and impression-oriented; subject to aggregation and report limits.
AI mention rate Share of observed prompts in which the brand is named. Repeatable manual or third-party sample Depends on prompt design, platform, time, and sample size; no universal official definition is established here.
AI citation frequency or share Frequency or proportion of observed citations attributed to the site. Bing Webmaster Tools for supported Microsoft experiences; other sources only when verified Citation share is not traffic share, a quality score, or a conventional rank.
Referral sessions or conversions Downstream activity attributed to search or AI referrals. Site analytics Attribution does not by itself establish incremental or causal impact.

Search Console’s average position is averaged across impressions, not a promise that a page holds one stable position for every search. For Google AI Overviews, all links in an overview are assigned the overview’s position; AI Mode follows Search position methodology. Neither figure describes a simple rank order among all sources cited in an AI answer. See Google’s explanation of impressions, position, and clicks.

Set up a comparison that can be repeated

Choose the outcome and identify the brand

Separate the question into the result you need: conventional organic placement, exposure in an AI feature, brand recall or recommendation, citations to the brand’s site, or downstream visits and conversions. Record the brand’s canonical spelling and relevant product or service names so reviewers can distinguish it from similarly named entities.

Freeze a representative query set

Include real discovery needs across branded questions, category searches, comparisons, and problem-solving prompts. Preserve the wording people might use rather than rewriting every prompt as an SEO keyword. For each item, keep a query ID, exact wording, intent, country, language, applicable device, and collection date. Keep the core set stable for trends; track newly added queries separately.

Keep the conditions attached to the result

For every measurement, record platform, market, language, query or prompt, time window, and collection method. Keep branded and non-branded queries separate. If the goal is a trend, compare matched periods and annotate site changes, campaigns, launches, or news events that could affect what users search for or what systems show.

Measure traditional search visibility in Search Console

Use the Search Console Performance report to track impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position for the chosen pages, countries, devices, and dates where available. Compare the same query set and time periods when possible. Google explains common performance-report tasks and comparisons in its Search results Performance report guide.

Query reporting can be restricted or incomplete. If some query rows are missing, describe the figures as reported data rather than an exhaustive view of every search. Do not treat average position as a single, directly observable rank for each query: it summarizes appearances across impressions and can shift with the mix of searches and result layouts.

Measure AI-answer visibility by platform

Google Search AI features

Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, date, and device dimensions. It focuses on impressions, not a universal count of brand mentions across AI products. Google announced the reports on June 3, 2026, and says rollout to websites worldwide was complete as of August 31, 2026. A property may still lack a report because of access rollout or insufficient impressions; ordinary Search performance-report limits also apply. The chart and table can differ because of aggregation, and the newest data may be preliminary. Check Google’s Generative AI performance report documentation for current scope and availability.

Google says its generative Search experiences are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. Its guide describes retrieval and query fan-out as part of how relevant information is found and responses are built. This indicates some shared foundations with conventional Search, not that a blue-link position predicts whether a page or brand will appear in every AI answer. See Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features.

Microsoft-supported AI experiences

Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report covers citation activity for Microsoft Copilot, Bing, and selected partner AI experiences. Microsoft announced Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare as global preview capabilities on June 16, 2026. Intents and Topics organize citation observations; Citation Share expresses a site’s portion of citations shown for a particular grounding query.

Microsoft characterizes Citation Share as observational, not a ranking system or competitive scoreboard. It does not reveal competitor domains, represent traffic share, or assign a quality score. These preview features do not create one universal AI-visibility ranking, and their classifications and coverage may evolve. See Microsoft’s announcement of the Bing Webmaster Tools AI visibility features.

Other answer engines

Unless a platform documents first-party reporting, use repeatable manual or tool-based samples and label them as samples—not complete platform-wide counts. For each observed answer, record separately whether the brand is mentioned, whether its site is cited, the source URL or domain, and whether the answer recommends, neutrally describes, or criticizes the brand. A brand can be mentioned without a site citation, and a citation alone does not show that anyone visited the site.

Report trends without overstating what they prove

For sampled AI answers, report both the numerator and denominator—for example, prompts where the brand appeared divided by all prompts reviewed—along with the dates, platforms, and sampling conditions. Repeat observations over time: a single response is not evidence of a stable result for every user, market, or version of an answer engine.

For search and AI reporting alike, note where platforms aggregate or limit data. Search Console cautions that changes in performance can coincide with events beyond a page edit. Compare with similar historical periods and annotate other relevant changes rather than claiming that a site update caused a movement. Differences between platforms may reflect different definitions and coverage, not a direct change in the brand’s underlying popularity.

Connect exposure to visits and business outcomes separately

Use site analytics to examine referral sessions and conversions by source and period. Impressions, mentions, and citations are exposure signals; they do not independently prove qualified visits, sales, or incremental impact. Treat a before-and-after rise as an association unless a separate analysis supports a causal claim, and account for attribution limits when interpreting referral data.
