Bitcoin mining energy costs affect miners’ operating margins, which in turn influence how much mining capacity stays online. A miner earns the block subsidy and transaction fees, then pays for electricity and other expenses; operators with cheaper power or more efficient hardware can withstand weaker revenue better. If enough miners shut down, hashrate falls and Bitcoin’s difficulty adjusts over time to keep blocks arriving roughly every ten minutes on average. That adjustment does not guarantee any miner a profit.
How electricity costs affect mining profitability
A miner’s simplified operating margin is the expected value of its block subsidy and transaction fees minus electricity and other operating costs. Electricity expense depends on the machines’ power draw, hours online, and the price the operator actually pays under its contract and market conditions.

Power is not the only cost. Hardware purchase and financing, hosting, cooling, maintenance, staffing, downtime, and pool fees also affect the result. Bitcoin’s market price, transaction demand, fees, and mining difficulty can change too, so a low electricity tariff alone does not establish that a site or machine is profitable.
Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance’s 2025 report found electricity made up over 80% of surveyed firms’ cash-based operating expenses. The report gave median costs of $45/MWh for electricity alone and $55.5/MWh all-in. These are survey benchmarks from 49 firms representing about 48% of network hashrate at the June 2024 data snapshot—not a universal tariff or a live 2026 cost. How mining costs feed back into the network
Miners compete using specialized hardware to find a valid proof of work. A miner’s chance of earning a block reward depends on its share of total computational power. Many miners join pools, which distribute proceeds according to contributed shares; payouts and pool terms vary. Bitcoin Developer Guide: Mining.
When revenue relative to costs improves, miners may add capacity or keep less efficient machines operating. When it worsens, some may curtail operations or retire equipment. Those decisions can change network hashrate. Bitcoin’s difficulty adjustment changes the work required to find a block in response, helping maintain an average block interval of roughly ten minutes. It does not stabilize power prices, guarantee miner profitability, or ensure that capacity returns immediately.

What miners earn: subsidy and transaction fees
After the April 2024 halving, the block subsidy is 3.125 BTC per block. The subsidy declines at successive halving events, while transaction fees provide an additional source of miner revenue. The next scheduled subsidy reduction follows another 210,000 blocks; the timing is block-based, not a fixed calendar date. Bitcoin Developer Guide: Mining.

Why hardware efficiency matters
Mining hardware efficiency is commonly expressed in joules per terahash (J/TH): it describes the energy used to perform a given amount of computation. A lower J/TH figure indicates a more efficient machine, which can reduce electricity use for a given computational output. Actual site economics also depend on the machine’s power draw and uptime, electricity price and contract, facility cooling, other expenses, and financing.
For example, BITMAIN publishes support documentation for its Antminer S21, an industrial ASIC miner. Its existence does not establish that a particular unit is profitable or suitable for a reader; those judgments require current specifications, local electrical requirements, power costs, and operating assumptions. How much electricity does Bitcoin mining use?
There is no single fixed amount of electricity required to produce one bitcoin or process one transaction. A site’s power bill is a site-level cost. Network-wide consumption figures, by contrast, are modeled estimates derived from factors such as hashrate, hardware efficiency, and assumed profitability and electricity prices.

Because there is no reliable, complete historical series of manufacturer market shares to identify the exact device mix, the model estimates a mixed fleet rather than measuring every machine. The figures should therefore be read as dated estimates, not as a direct meter reading. CBECI methodology.

| Cambridge estimate or survey result | What it represents |
|---|---|
| 138.2 TWh annualized, June 30, 2024 | CBECI estimated consumption; reported as about 0.54% of global electricity use at that date. |
| 183 TWh annualized, December 31, 2024 | A later point in the report’s model series, not a directly metered total. |
| 52.4% sustainable energy in the 2024 surveyed mix | Survey result: 42.6% renewables and 9.8% nuclear. |
| 38.2% natural gas and 8.9% coal in the 2024 surveyed mix | Survey results; the report’s 2022 estimate was 25.0% natural gas and 36.6% coal. |
The two consumption figures are time-specific modeled estimates in Cambridge’s 2025 report. Its survey energy mix is a separate measure based on participating miners, not a universal measurement of every operation worldwide. The report’s model series rose from June to December 2024 as hashrate grew despite efficiency gains. Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, 2025.
Does cheaper electricity make Bitcoin more secure?
Cheaper electricity can improve a miner’s margins and may make it economical to keep more capacity online, but an electricity bill or a consumption estimate alone does not measure Bitcoin’s security. Security also depends on hashrate, the value of miner rewards, the distribution and control of mining capacity, and the cost and feasibility of an attack. The available figures do not quantify attack cost.
Why electricity use is not the whole environmental picture
Consumption totals do not show how electricity was generated or where mining took place. Cambridge’s 2025 report found a 52.4% sustainable-energy share in its 2024 survey, including renewables and nuclear, but that is a survey result rather than a universal network measurement. As Alexander Neumueller, Research Lead – Climate Aspects at the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, writes: “Nonetheless, while electricity consumption is crucial to understanding Bitcoin’s environmental footprint, it is only one element.” Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, 2025.

What to compare when evaluating two mining operations
- Electricity price, contract structure, and exposure to changing power-market conditions or curtailment.
- Hardware efficiency in J/TH, power draw, and uptime.
- Cooling, hosting, maintenance, staffing, and other operating expenses.
- Hardware acquisition and financing costs.
- Expected subsidy and transaction-fee revenue, Bitcoin-price assumptions, and pool fees and payout terms.
These factors need to be assessed together and for the relevant location and operating assumptions; efficiency alone is not a profitability ranking.
