You can borrow in decentralized finance (DeFi) against Bitcoin without selling your BTC, but the route usually involves more than moving native bitcoin into a lending app. A market may accept a BTC-linked token on a smart-contract network, or a different design may lock BTC on Bitcoin under a cross-chain debt contract. In either case, the market sets the borrowing and liquidation rules, and the collateral can lose value or become difficult to redeem or exit.

What it means to borrow against Bitcoin

Collateral is an asset pledged to secure a loan. In a DeFi lending market, a borrower supplies an accepted asset to a smart contract and borrows another asset under rules encoded or administered by the protocol. Bitcoin can serve as that pledge, but not every market can use native BTC directly: Bitcoin does not automatically function as a token on every smart-contract network.

The common route is to use a token that represents BTC on a network where a particular lending market accepts it. The holder deposits that token as collateral and borrows an asset supported by the market. A second, distinct route is to lock BTC through a Bitcoin contract as collateral for debt whose principal is on another blockchain. These designs are not interchangeable: they differ in how BTC is represented or controlled, and in their custody, redemption, and liquidation arrangements.

Borrowing can let someone retain exposure to Bitcoin while obtaining another asset, but it does not make the loan risk-free or guarantee that the borrower can keep the BTC. If collateral value falls far enough under the applicable rules, liquidation may follow. A borrower must also account for the risks in the token, network, market, and ability to exit.

Route 1: use a BTC-linked token in a lending market

How tokenized BTC works

A token such as WBTC or tBTC represents BTC on another network. The token is not operationally identical to native BTC: it adds a token contract and a process for backing, issuing, transferring, and potentially redeeming that representation. The design varies by token. Custody, signers, bridges, reserves, and redemption rules can differ, so one BTC-linked asset should not be treated as a substitute for another without checking its mechanics.

WBTC documentation describes a 1:1 BTC-backed token model and a mint-and-burn process involving authorized merchants and custody. Its project materials describe WBTC as usable for DeFi collateral. These are issuer statements about the design and intended use, not proof that every lending market accepts WBTC or that a particular market is currently safe or liquid. tBTC materials also describe collateral use, but its arrangements should be assessed separately.

The typical borrowing sequence

  1. Choose the lending market and check acceptance. Verify that the exact market currently accepts the exact BTC-linked token on the network you intend to use. An integration mention by a token project is not confirmation of current market configuration.
  2. Confirm the token and network. Check the token contract address and chain against the market’s current official documentation. A token with the same ticker on a different network may not be the asset the market supports.
  3. Acquire the token through a supported route. Review how it is issued or obtained, who controls the underlying BTC, and what requirements apply to redemption. Do not assume native BTC can be deposited directly into an EVM lending market unless the market documents that exact flow.
  4. Supply it as collateral. The protocol’s interface should show the supplied asset and the borrowing limits or collateral parameters applicable to it. Check those values in the live market documentation as well as the interface.
  5. Borrow within the market’s rules. The market may impose an asset-specific borrowing limit, collateral threshold, or cap. Borrowing less than the maximum can leave more room for a price decline before liquidation conditions are reached, although it cannot eliminate other risks.
  6. Monitor and manage the position. Follow collateral value and the market’s liquidation conditions. If the position approaches a threshold, the protocol may allow the borrower to repay debt or add collateral, subject to the market’s operation and available liquidity.
  7. Repay and withdraw. Repay according to the market’s rules, then withdraw collateral if the position and protocol permit it. The ability to withdraw or exchange assets may depend on liquidity and operational conditions at the time.

What the route adds to the risk

Tokenization can make BTC usable in a smart-contract lending market, but it also introduces reliance on the token’s backing and issuance or redemption process. Under stress, a BTC-linked token may not trade exactly at the value of native BTC, and redemption may depend on counterparties or protocol rules. Circle’s 2026 discussion of on-chain lending identifies market-liquidity risk as one consideration for BTC-linked claims. The token’s market price, redemption access, and underlying BTC are therefore separate things to assess.

Using a tokenized asset also means relying on the network and its contracts, in addition to the lending protocol. A failure or disruption in custody, signing, bridging, token contracts, or the lending market can affect value or access even if Bitcoin’s own price is stable. DeFi composability—the ability to use an asset in other on-chain applications—is gained at the cost of those extra dependencies.

Route 2: lock BTC under a cross-chain contract design

BIP 197 describes a Hashed Time-Locked Collateral Contract (HTLCC), a proposal for locking BTC on Bitcoin for a debt agreement where the loan principal is denominated on another blockchain. The proposal says the contract consists of two scripts that let a designated borrower lock funds on Bitcoin for a specified time as collateral. It outlines repayment and a bidding or liquidation path after default.

This illustrates a way to structure Bitcoin collateral without treating BTC as an ordinary token on the destination chain. It is a proposal, however: the proposal text by itself does not establish that a widely used consumer product has deployed the design, nor does it show that a particular borrower can use it today. Anyone considering such an option would need to verify that the exact implementation is live, understand its time limits and default process, and assess who can act under its scripts.

Route 3: lock BTC in a protocol vault

Some protocols describe vaults in which users lock BTC collateral and issue a protocol stablecoin. A vault is governed by that protocol’s collateral rules; it should not be assumed to work like every tokenized-BTC lending market or every Bitcoin-native contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Money Protocol’s documentation gives a protocol-specific example: its vault is undercollateralized and subject to liquidation when its minimum collateral ratio falls below 110%. The documentation describes public liquidation and an incentive within its own system. That 110% threshold is Money Protocol’s rule, not a general DeFi standard or a safe borrowing target for other markets. Protocol parameters can change, so a borrower should consult current documentation before relying on a quoted operational value.

How borrowing limits and liquidation affect a position

Markets generally constrain borrowing in relation to collateral value. Circle’s 2026 overview describes on-chain lending as generally overcollateralized and says protocols use asset-specific loan-to-value (LTV) ratios, liquidation thresholds, and caps. These are market-structure observations, not parameters for every live protocol. The precise values and mechanics must come from the chosen market.

An LTV ratio compares debt with collateral value. A liquidation threshold is a rule that determines when a position is eligible for liquidation; it is not necessarily the same number as the maximum amount a borrower can initially draw. If collateral falls in value, or the debt grows under the market’s rules, the position can move closer to the liquidation condition. Once the condition is met, the protocol may permit or trigger liquidation under its own process.

Liquidation can mean losing some or all of the pledged asset to satisfy the debt and protocol rules. The details—including any penalty, who can liquidate, and how the collateral is sold or transferred—depend on the protocol. Avoid treating a displayed borrowing maximum as a recommended amount: a position close to its limit has less room to absorb a price decline or other disruption.

What to compare before choosing an option

  • Collateral representation: Is BTC locked on Bitcoin under a documented contract, or represented by a token on another network?
  • Control and custody: Who controls the underlying BTC? Who can issue or redeem the token? What happens if a custodian, signer, or bridge is unavailable or fails?
  • Backing and redemption: What evidence supports the backing claim? Who is eligible to redeem, and what timing, fees, or conditions apply? Can the token trade away from the value of BTC?
  • Network and integration: Which exact chain and token contract are involved? Does the intended lending market currently accept that asset as collateral?
  • Borrowing and liquidation: What are the current LTV, liquidation threshold, caps, and any liquidation penalty? What price source or oracle is used, and how can the borrower add collateral or repay?
  • Liquidity and exit: Can collateral and borrowed assets be exchanged or withdrawn under ordinary conditions, and what could happen during volatility?
  • Protocol dependencies: What assumptions does the system make about smart contracts, oracles, governance, bridges, custody, and operations?

These checks answer different questions. A 1:1 backing description does not establish redemption access for every holder; a token being listed or described for DeFi use does not prove acceptance by a particular market; and an accepted collateral asset does not guarantee that an exit will remain liquid during stress.

Risks that extend beyond Bitcoin’s price

Collateral and liquidation risk

A fall in BTC’s price can reduce the value of BTC-linked collateral relative to debt and bring a position closer to liquidation. The token’s own market price may also diverge from native BTC, so a borrower should not assume the collateral will always track BTC exactly.

Backing, custody, and redemption risk

Tokenized BTC depends on the systems that hold or otherwise secure BTC and support the representation. The relevant questions differ by asset: how backing is established, who can mint or burn, whether a holder can redeem, and what happens if an intermediary or signing arrangement cannot operate. Issuer descriptions explain intended mechanisms but do not remove the need to examine the current arrangement.

Liquidity and exit risk

A collateral position can be difficult to manage if the collateral or borrowed asset cannot be readily exchanged, or if protocol liquidity is constrained. This matters both when trying to repay and when trying to leave a position. Market-liquidity risk is distinct from Bitcoin’s quoted price and can become more consequential in volatile conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Software, oracle, network, and governance risk

Smart-contract errors or exploits, unreliable price feeds, network interruptions, bridge or signing failures, and protocol decisions can affect a position. Which of these risks apply depends on the specific token, chain, and lending design; they cannot be collapsed into a single generic claim that all BTC collateral works the same way.

A practical pre-borrow checklist

  1. Identify the asset precisely. Record its name, ticker, network, and contract address; distinguish it from native BTC and from other tokens with a similar label.
  2. Read the token’s backing and redemption terms. Determine what supports the token, who controls relevant processes, and whether your route to redemption is actually available to you.
  3. Verify the live market configuration. Confirm the market accepts that collateral now and that the chain and contract match the market’s own documentation.
  4. Understand the full liquidation path. Find the borrowing limit, threshold, oracle, cap, and any penalty. Work out what action you could take if the collateral value falls; do not assume transactions or liquidity will always be available at the needed moment.
  5. Decide how much exposure to take. A smaller loan relative to collateral can provide more room under a price decline than borrowing to the maximum, but it does not protect against token, contract, custody, liquidity, or network failure.
  6. Plan repayment and exit before borrowing. Know what asset must be repaid, how you would obtain it, and what conditions allow collateral withdrawal. Recheck live rules and liquidity before acting, because integrations, parameters, and redemption routes can change.

When Bitcoin collateral is—and is not—a fit

This approach may suit someone who wants to access another asset while retaining BTC exposure and who understands the additional token or contract dependencies. It is not equivalent to holding BTC in a wallet: a collateralized position is subject to debt terms, liquidation rules, and the mechanisms that make the chosen representation usable.

If preserving direct control of native BTC is the priority, a tokenized collateral route necessarily changes that control and adds a representation layer; a Bitcoin-native or cross-chain contract would need to be evaluated as its own implemented product rather than assumed to be available because a proposal describes it. If the goal is simply to avoid selling, borrowing still creates repayment obligations and the possibility of forced collateral disposition. The right comparison is therefore not just the interest or borrowing amount, but the entire path from BTC control and collateralization to repayment and withdrawal.
