The champion earns 1,000 ATP ranking points in each format, but lower-round points and the number of places reserved for different entry routes vary by draw size. Masters results also feed into a ranking calculation that treats eight events as mandatory, subject to detailed entry and replacement rules.
What makes a tournament a Masters 1000?
ATP Masters 1000 is a category of ATP Tour tournament. The “1000” refers to the ranking points awarded to the champion, not to the number of players, matches or ranking points available across the draw. The ATP’s 2026 points table awards the same 1,000 winner points in both the 96-player and 48/56-player formats.

That shared champion’s reward can make the events look more uniform than they are. The 2026 rulebook specifies three singles draw sizes, with different entry-place allocations and some different points for players who leave in earlier rounds. So, when comparing two Masters events, it matters which draw format each uses—not just that both are Masters 1000 tournaments.
This article covers the 2026 ATP rules. Draw formats and point tables are season-specific; a later season’s rulebook may change them.

How the singles draws are structured
The 2026 ATP rules list 96-player outdoor, 56-player outdoor and 48-player indoor singles main draws. Each draw is filled through a combination of direct acceptances, qualifying places, wild cards and, in some cases, a special-exempt place.
| Format | Direct acceptances | Qualifiers | Wild cards | Special exempts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 96-player outdoor | 78–79 | 12 | 5 | Zero or one |
| 56-player outdoor | 44–45 | 7 | 4 | Zero or one |
| 48-player indoor | 38–39 | 6 | 3 | Zero or one |
The number of direct acceptances is a range because a special-exempt place may or may not be used. Where the draw includes a special exempt, the lower direct-acceptance figure plus that place completes the field; where it does not, the higher direct-acceptance figure does so. In each format, the listed categories add up to the advertised draw size.
What the entry categories tell you
- Direct acceptances: places allocated through the event’s direct-entry process. The figures above give the number of these places, but the cited 2026 draw provisions do not set out the detailed acceptance-list mechanics.
- Qualifiers: players who reach the main draw through qualifying. Their place in the main draw is in addition to the qualifying points described below.
- Wild cards: places assigned as wild cards. The 2026 draw table specifies their number in each format.
- Special exempts: the draw may include zero or one such place. The number is set out here; the eligibility and award procedure are not detailed in the cited draw figures.
A 96-player event therefore has a larger field and more qualifying places than either of the other formats. It also has more wild cards. The format by itself does not tell you which individual players will enter: it describes how many places each entry category occupies, not the final list of entrants.
How many ranking points each round earns
The points below are ATP ranking points for singles results under the 2026 PIF ATP Rankings table. The champion, runner-up, semifinalists, quarterfinalists and players reaching the round of 16 receive the same totals in all three draw formats. The differences appear in the earlier-round entries.

| Result | 96-player draw | 48/56-player draw |
|---|---|---|
| Champion | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| Runner-up | 650 | 650 |
| Semifinalist | 400 | 400 |
| Quarterfinalist | 200 | 200 |
| Round of 16 | 100 | 100 |
| R32 | 50 | 50 |
| R64 | 30 | 10 |
| R128 | 10 |
The R64 line shows a notable format difference: the 2026 table assigns 30 points at that result in a 96-player event and 10 points in a 48/56-player event. The 96-player table also lists 10 points at R128, a round not listed in the 48/56-player table. Use the points table for the specific format rather than assuming that the same round label always means the same number of points.
These are points for the tournament result, not a promise that a player’s total ranking will rise by precisely that amount. The points table establishes what the result earns; how results are incorporated into a player’s ranking is governed separately by the ranking rules.
How a qualifying run affects the total
Qualifiers can earn qualifying points as well as points for their main-draw performance. Under the 2026 table, a player who qualifies into a 48/56-player main draw receives 30 qualifying points; at a 96-player event, the qualifying entry is worth 20. A last-round qualifying loss earns 16 points, except at an event with a main draw larger than 56, where the table specifies 10. A first-round qualifying loss earns zero.
For example, a player who qualifies into a 96-player event and then reaches the round of 16 earns 20 qualifying points plus 100 for that main-draw result, for 120 points from those entries under the table. At a 48/56-player event, qualifying into the main draw and then reaching the round of 16 corresponds to 30 qualifying points plus 100 main-draw points, or 130 total. These examples assume the player earns the stated qualifying-entry points and reaches the stated main-draw result; they do not address ranking-period counting or other ranking-rule adjustments.

How Masters results count in the ATP ranking
A tournament’s points table answers how many points a result earns. The ranking rules answer which results are included when calculating a player’s ranking. Those are related but distinct questions: an event can award a stated number of points, while the ranking calculation applies mandatory-event and replacement provisions to the player’s results.
Under the 2026 PIF ATP Rankings rules, eight ATP Masters 1000 tournaments are mandatory components of the relevant ranking period for commitment and non-commitment players. The calculation also includes Grand Slams and other specified categories. “Mandatory” is not simply shorthand for “a player must appear at all eight events”: the rules describe how event acceptance and participation affect which results count.
Accepted entry can matter even without playing
Once a player is accepted into a mandatory event in the ways specified by the rules, the event’s result may count even if the player does not participate. That provision means that withdrawing or otherwise not taking part does not automatically remove the event from the ranking calculation. The exact outcome depends on the circumstances and the applicable rule provisions; the general rule should not be read as a full account of every exception or penalty.

This is why a player’s ranking total cannot always be reconstructed by adding only the points from tournaments they visibly played. A mandatory event’s treatment can depend on the player’s accepted status under the rules, not solely on whether the player completed a match.

When a later ATP 500 or ATP 250 result can replace a result
The 2026 rules allow eligible players to replace up to three mandatory Masters singles results or zero pointers with a better later ATP 500 or ATP 250 score, subject to conditions. The stated conditions include participation and the absence of a ranking penalty at the Masters event being replaced.
This is a limited replacement option, not an unrestricted way to pick any favorable results after the season. Eligibility, the event being replaced and the conditions for the substitute score matter. Because the rules tie replacement to specific circumstances, a player cannot assume that every lower Masters result can be swapped out for a better result elsewhere.
The practical takeaway is to distinguish three stages: the tournament result determines the points in the event table; the ranking rules determine which results enter the relevant calculation; and any permitted replacement operates only under its stated conditions. A points total seen next to a tournament result is not by itself a complete explanation of a player’s ranking.

Ranking points and the separate bonus-pool mechanism
The ATP also uses points for a compensation mechanism, but that is not the same thing as the ranking points a player earns by reaching a round. Under the 2026 ATP circuit regulations, 30% of the fixed bonus pool for Masters 1000 events and the ATP Finals is distributed using a value-per-point system based on points earned at those events.

That allocation mechanism should not be confused with the tournament’s ranking-points table. The table awards points for results such as winning the title or reaching the quarterfinals. The bonus-pool provision uses event points as a basis for allocating part of a separate pool; it does not turn ranking points into a direct cash value for every player or change the ranking points awarded for a round.
How to compare two Masters 1000 events
When comparing events, identify the season first, then check the draw and points provisions that apply to each one. A useful comparison separates field structure from ranking treatment:
- Check the draw size and conditions: determine whether the event uses the 96-player outdoor, 56-player outdoor or 48-player indoor format.
- Compare entry places: note the numbers of direct acceptances, qualifiers, wild cards and possible special exempts. A larger draw does not mean every entry category increases by the same amount.
- Compare the exit-round points: the top results carry the same points across the listed formats, while R64 and R128 are where the table differs.
- Account for qualifying: if a player comes through qualifying, add the applicable qualifying points to the main-draw points rather than treating the main-draw score as the whole tournament total.
- Check ranking treatment separately: confirm whether the event falls within the mandatory-event rules for the relevant ranking period and whether acceptance or a possible replacement affects the calculation.
This approach avoids two common errors: treating every Masters draw as the same size and assuming that a round result alone explains how it will count in the player’s ranking. For a season-specific answer, the controlling documents are the ATP rulebook chapters on competition, PIF ATP Rankings and circuit regulations.
