The result depends on who pays for each part of the offer, whether the promotion creates genuinely additional sales, and what remains after selling and fulfilment costs. For competing retailers, the event can increase price pressure, but the available evidence does not establish how much Big Billion Days reduces offline sales.
What is happening in the 2026 Big Billion Days edition?
Flipkart announced on October 6, 2026, that the 13th edition of Big Billion Days would start on October 9, with early access on October 8. Those dates describe this edition; they should not be treated as a fixed annual schedule. As of October 13, the event is underway.

Flipkart says the 2026 event features 150 million products and more than 60% more transacting sellers than the previous year. It also says a 0% commission arrangement across fashion price points brought 75% new sellers to the platform. These are company-reported scale and participation figures, not independently audited measures of sales growth or seller profitability. A large catalogue and more participating sellers show the reach and breadth the platform is promoting; they do not establish how much any individual brand sold, or earned.

Flipkart has described the event as a brand-growth and customer-reach opportunity for large and emerging brands. That is the organizer’s positioning, not proof that event sales are incremental or profitable. In a 2025 announcement, Flipkart vice president of growth and marketing Pratik Shetty called the event “India’s very own festival of possibilities”; that language conveys the company’s brand message rather than an economic finding.

What does a Big Billion Days “discount” actually include?
A customer’s effective price may result from several mechanisms rather than one straightforward markdown. Flipkart’s 2025 announcement described sale prices alongside bank-card discounts, no-cost EMI, member early access and rewards. It also described sale prices through its quick-commerce service in selected locations. These were 2025 terms, not a statement of the offers available in 2026; shoppers and sellers need to check current product, payment, membership and location conditions.
| Offer component | What it can change | What a brand or seller needs to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Item markdown | The displayed selling price, usually reduced from a reference price | Whether the brand, seller, platform or several parties fund the reduction, and which price serves as the comparison |
| Bank-card offer | The amount an eligible customer pays after a payment-specific benefit | Whether the seller bears any part of the offer or associated payment cost, and which cards or transactions qualify |
| No-cost EMI | The way a customer spreads payment, potentially affecting affordability and purchase timing | Who absorbs any financing-related cost and what the offer’s terms mean for the seller’s proceeds |
| Loyalty reward or early access | The value available to eligible members and when they can shop | Whether the offer changes the audience, timing or cost of a promotion; the 2025 announcement does not isolate its effect on brand economics |
| Quick-commerce availability | Where and how quickly a customer may be able to receive an eligible item | Whether the product and promotion apply in the customer’s location and what fulfilment arrangement applies |
The table separates possible offer components; it does not assert that every component appears in every listing or that a seller funds them. The distinction matters because the consumer-facing saving and the amount a seller gives up are not necessarily identical. A platform-funded benefit may lower the customer’s effective price without the brand paying the whole amount. Conversely, a brand can face costs beyond the markdown, such as marketplace charges, advertising or fulfilment. The funding arrangement must be checked rather than inferred from the size of the displayed deal.
How can discounts help brands—and where is the limit?
A promotion can make a product more attractive during a high-traffic shopping period, help it compete for attention and provide an opportunity to reach customers who might not otherwise consider it. Those are plausible routes to demand, not a guarantee of profitable growth. Flipkart’s event scale claims establish what the company says about its selection and seller participation; they do not show how much additional demand a given brand obtained compared with what it would have sold without the event.

The central business question is whether the contribution from genuinely additional sales covers the full cost of generating them. “More units sold during the sale” is not enough by itself. Some customers might have bought the product later at a different price, shifted a planned purchase forward, or chosen the promoted product instead of another item from the same brand. In those cases, event volume can overstate the amount of new business.
Build the calculation around contribution, not gross sales
A practical comparison starts with a credible estimate of what the brand would have sold without the event. The relevant baseline could use comparable products, periods or locations, but the method should account for differences that make a simple before-and-after comparison misleading. A brand should then compare the event’s incremental contribution with the costs that arise from making and fulfilling those incremental sales.
One useful structure is:
Incremental contribution from the event = contribution on event sales above the expected baseline − incremental promotion and selling costs.

For this purpose, contribution should reflect the proceeds actually retained on the relevant units after the seller- or brand-funded price reduction and variable costs. Add the costs that apply to the particular arrangement, including marketplace fees, advertising, fulfilment, payment charges, cancellations and returns. Do not subtract a platform-funded discount from the brand’s contribution as though the brand paid it; establish the funding source first. Likewise, do not assume a bank offer is cost-free to the seller without checking its terms.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use a defensible baseline. Compare event units with a reasonable no-event estimate, rather than crediting every sale during the event to the discount.
- Separate revenue from retained value. Track the brand’s net proceeds and variable costs, not only the customer-facing sale price or order value.
- Include demand timing. Look at sales after the event to assess whether the promotion brought purchases forward from later weeks.
- Include the full order outcome. Cancellations and returns can make booked orders a poor proxy for completed, retained sales.
- Check customer quality over time. Repeat purchases and retention can matter to the economics, but should be measured rather than assumed from event traffic.
The available sources do not provide an event-specific causal estimate of Big Billion Days’ effect on a brand’s margins. Google’s 2026 India commerce analysis discusses promotion effectiveness, margin erosion and measurement as broader commerce concerns. It cites a Boston Consulting Group estimate that 30–40% of retail promotions are inefficient or unprofitable; the figure is global, not an India or Big Billion Days result, and the Google page does not state the underlying estimate’s year. It is a reason to measure promotion economics, not a rate that can be applied to this event or to a specific seller.
Who pays for the offer, and why does transparency matter?
Funding determines how a discount flows through the economics. A platform may fund part of a benefit, a brand or seller may reduce its own price, a bank may provide a payment offer, or costs may be shared. The amount a customer saves therefore cannot be used on its own to calculate the brand’s margin impact. Brands should confirm the funding split and the conditions attached to each offer before committing inventory or promotional spend.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) treated discount transparency as a competition concern in its e-commerce market study. The Government of India’s 2020 summary says the study covered 16 platforms, 164 business entities and seven payment providers. The CCI called for transparent discount policies that explain how platform-funded discount rates are determined and what participation or non-participation means for sellers. Its recommendations frame matters for consideration; they do not amount to a finding that every deep discount, or every Big Billion Days offer, is unlawful.
For a participating seller, the questions are practical as well as regulatory: What price and funding terms apply to the listing? Is a platform contribution conditional on participation, inventory or another requirement? What changes if the seller declines? Can the seller reconcile the customer offer with the amount ultimately credited? Clear answers make it easier to assess whether the promotion is commercially worthwhile and what obligations accompany it.
How might the event affect retailers that do not participate?
A prominent online promotion can raise competitive pressure for retailers that do not participate or cannot match the customer’s effective price. The CCI’s study identified deep discounts as one of the issues relevant to competition in e-commerce and called for greater clarity around platform-funded discounts and participation. That establishes a documented policy concern; it does not quantify a Big Billion Days sales loss for physical stores.
Best Value
The available sources do not establish a causal percentage decline in offline sales attributable to this event. A price comparison alone cannot prove displacement: shoppers may be buying different products, shopping at different times, or valuing availability and service as well as price. Category, local competition, product availability, service and whether the online and offline offers are genuinely comparable are variables a retailer would need to examine, not settled explanations for a particular outcome.
What an offline retailer can measure
- Compare store sales with a relevant baseline and separate affected product lines from categories not exposed to the same online offer.
- Check whether the exact product, model, bundle, warranty and delivery terms match before treating online and store prices as equivalent.
- Track customer enquiries or lost-sale reasons alongside transactions; a lower online price is not, by itself, evidence of why a customer chose another channel.
- Distinguish a temporary shift in purchase timing from a lasting change in demand by monitoring the period after the event.
These checks can help a retailer describe its own experience accurately. They should not be presented as proof that Big Billion Days caused a market-wide or nationwide offline-sales decline unless a suitable study supports that conclusion.
How should brands and retailers assess an event promotion?
The same questions apply whether a business is considering participation, reviewing a past campaign or evaluating pressure from a rival promotion. A disciplined assessment separates customer value, funding and commercial outcomes instead of treating a headline discount as a complete account of the deal.

- Map the offer. Record the item markdown, eligible card or payment benefit, any financing or loyalty value, timing and geographic limits. Use the terms for the edition being assessed; past-year promotions are not evidence of current terms.
- Identify each funder. Assign each part of the offer to the brand, seller, platform, bank or shared arrangement. Confirm how the arrangement affects seller proceeds rather than inferring it from the advertised saving.
- Set the comparison before the event. Define the baseline, products and time window that will be used to estimate sales that would have occurred anyway. Document material differences between the event and comparison period.
- Calculate contribution after costs. Include funded discounts, marketplace fees, advertising, fulfilment, payment charges, cancellations and returns where they apply. Keep platform-funded value separate from seller-funded cost.
- Check operational capacity. Test whether inventory depth, fulfilment capacity and the delivery promise can support expected orders. More demand is not useful if stockouts or service failures prevent completed sales.
- Review the after-event period. Examine repeat purchasing, retention and later sales to see whether the event added demand or mainly changed when customers bought.
- Make the decision against a business objective. Reach, trial, volume and short-term contribution are different objectives. State which one matters and use a measure suited to it instead of assuming that visibility or high sales prove success.
This framework follows from the offer mechanisms described by Flipkart, the CCI’s emphasis on discount transparency and Google’s discussion of promotion measurement. It is a way to evaluate a particular deal, not a claim that all brands or sellers experience the same result.
How should the broader festive-sales forecast be interpreted?
Datum Intelligence forecast that India’s festive sales would grow 25–29% in 2026. This is a forecast for the broader festive window, not a realized figure and not an estimate of Big Billion Days sales, discount effectiveness or profit. It provides context for expectations about festive commerce, but it cannot establish what the event caused for a specific retailer, brand or product.
