In a 2019 study, they used benzene-derived building blocks to synthesize a finite cylindrical molecule with a deliberately repeating pattern of vacancy-like pores. The molecular structure was confirmed experimentally; extending it into a longer fused nanotube remains a computational proposal.
What the researchers made
The 2019 study in Science describes a finite phenine nanotube: a cylindrical molecule with the formula C304H264, assembled from 40 benzene-derived phenine units. Each unit connects to its neighbors at the 1, 3, and 5 positions, creating a regular pattern of openings along the cylinder. The authors describe these as periodic vacancy defects.

Spectroscopic analysis and crystallography established the molecule’s cylindrical structure and repeating defects. Its pores also allowed multiple fullerene molecules to be included as guests, demonstrating that the openings were accessible within the molecular structure. The study’s abstract and publication details appeared in Science on January 11, 2019, in volume 363, issue 6423, pages 151–155.

The team used a designed, nine-step organic synthesis, including successive borylations and coupling reactions, to assemble the cylindrical molecule. The authors report an average yield of 91% for each benzene–benzene bond-forming step. That is a per-bond average, not the overall yield for the complete nine-step route.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In this context, “made from benzene” means benzene supplies aromatic building blocks that are chemically modified and joined in a planned sequence. It does not mean that a quantity of benzene was simply heated until it became a nanotube.
What is predictable—and what is not yet demonstrated
The defect pattern is predictable at the scale of the synthesized molecule because the chosen 1,3,5 connection pattern determines where the openings occur. The study established that arrangement in a finite cylinder. Calculations further suggest that fusing many such cylinders could yield longer nanotubes with regular vacancy defects and altered electronic properties.

That proposed extension should not be confused with an experimentally demonstrated extended tube. The University of Tokyo’s account describes possible nanocarbon semiconductor applications as a future direction, not a measured device result. The university announcement summarizes the molecular synthesis and its prospective implications.
How this differs from high-temperature benzene pyrolysis
A separate route studied in 1998 heated benzene over nickel powder at approximately 600–900 °C. That catalytic pyrolysis produced a mixture of carbon nanostructures, rather than a single molecule designed with a specified atomic pattern. The 1998 study is useful context, but it concerns a chemically and structurally different process.
