They combine identity checks, login and device signals, customer behavior, transaction monitoring, staff procedures, and incident response. That layered approach can help catch account takeover and impersonation—including scams using synthetic voices or images—but it cannot guarantee that every attack will be detected.
This article focuses on U.S. banking guidance and statements from U.S. federal banking officials. The guidance is risk-based: it does not require every bank to use one particular product or promise that any control will stop every attack.

What signals can banks use to spot an attack?
A bank may assess several kinds of information together. A signal can prompt additional scrutiny without proving that a customer or transaction is fraudulent.
| Signal area | What may draw attention | How it can help |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication and access | Credential abuse, phishing or malware-related activity, suspicious access, repeated login attempts, or account lockouts. | Risk assessment and layered controls can help reduce the danger of unauthorized access. Interagency guidance warns that attacks against systems relying on a single factor can result in account fraud, identity theft, data theft or destruction, and ransomware effects. |
| Behavior and activity patterns | A change in customer behavior, unusual login activity, or a change in transaction velocity. | Fraud and anomaly processes can flag activity that differs from expected patterns. Logs can help investigate unauthorized activity and reconstruct events. |
| Possible impersonation | A suspicious voice or image, unusual behavior during an interaction, or concerns raised by audio or video metadata. | Federal Reserve Governor Michael S. Barr described voice analysis, facial analysis, behavioral biometrics, and metadata review as possible defensive approaches. A concern may lead to another verification step rather than an automatic conclusion. |
| Payment details | An unusual or large transfer, an unexpected recipient, or other payment characteristics that warrant review. | Reviewing the recipient and payment—not just whether the sender appears to be who they claim—can help identify suspicious transfers. |
| Operational and service-provider risks | Weaknesses or incidents involving systems that handle customer information, including those operated by service providers. | Interagency security guidance calls for risk-based oversight, control testing, and incident-response planning. |
How do banks detect AI-generated voice scams?
Synthetic voice and image tools can make an impostor sound or look like someone a customer knows. Barr’s April 17, 2025 speech described this as a challenge for identity checks and outlined possible ways to scrutinize a suspicious interaction: voice or facial analysis, behavioral biometrics, and review of audio or video metadata. He also described using additional verification when a signal raises concern.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
These are possible defensive approaches, not evidence that every bank deploys them or that they reliably identify every deepfake. A voice match by itself should not be treated as conclusive proof of identity. Reviewing the requested payment, its recipient, and other account activity can add context to an identity signal.
How do the protections work together?
Controls are selected according to risk, rather than prescribed as one product for every customer and situation. The access point, user, device, transaction, and potential harm can all affect what checks are appropriate.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Assess the risk. A bank evaluates the account or access route and the possible consequences of misuse. Remote access, account changes, or a higher-risk payment may call for stronger checks.
- Verify access with layered controls. The interagency authentication guidance says MFA or controls of equivalent strength can better mitigate risk when single-factor authentication and other layers are insufficient. Authentication helps protect access, but it is not by itself proof of identity in every circumstance.
- Monitor logins and payments. Fraud processes can flag unusual access, changes in behavior, transaction speed or size, or questionable recipients. A bank may send a flagged transaction for additional review before authorizing it.
- Train staff and customers. Interagency standards call for staff training that includes recognizing fraud and identity-theft schemes. Barr has advised customers to enable MFA where available and verify unusual requests through a separate channel, even when the requester seems familiar.
- Investigate and respond. Incident-response plans can cover investigation, containment, evidence preservation, and regulator or law-enforcement notifications where appropriate. Customer notice may also be warranted.
- Share information where authorized. A July 2026 Federal Reserve letter explains that section 314(b) permits voluntary information-sharing between financial institutions under a liability safe harbor to help identify and report certain potentially illicit activity; FinCEN encourages participation.
Can a deepfake get into a bank account?
A deepfake could be used as part of an impersonation attempt, but the reviewed U.S. federal sources do not establish how often deepfakes succeed at bank authentication or how accurately banks detect them. Nor do they establish industry-wide adoption of AI detection tools. Security depends on the combination of controls and how a bank applies them; no single voice, face, or authentication check should be understood as a guarantee.

For customers, the practical point is to treat a convincing voice or video as a claim to verify, not as verification on its own. If a request involves an unusual payment or account change, contact the person or institution using a separate, trusted channel rather than relying on the contact method that delivered the request.

What can you do to protect your bank account?
- Turn on MFA where your bank offers it. The specific methods available vary by bank. A security key is only an optional MFA example if your bank supports it; confirm compatibility before relying on one.
- Verify unusual requests separately. Barr recommends using another channel to check unexpected payment or account requests, even when they appear to come from a familiar person.
- Pay attention to account alerts and controls. Review what alerts the bank offers and how you can manage them. The sources do not establish that every bank offers the same alerts or settings.
- Know how to report suspicious activity and recover access. Check your bank’s own instructions so you know how to report a suspected scam or account problem.
How can you compare a bank’s account protections?
There is no basis in the cited federal materials for ranking banks by AI detection capability. To understand the protections available to you, ask or check the bank’s documentation for:
- Which MFA methods it supports.
- Whether a new device, recipient, contact-detail change, or unusual transfer can trigger an additional check.
- Which account alerts and customer controls are available.
- How to report suspicious activity and recover account access.
- How the bank communicates when it flags or restricts a transaction.
Barr called banks “frontline defenders against deepfake-enabled fraud due to their direct involvement with financial transactions and customer data” in his April 17, 2025 speech. The practical meaning is layered defense—not a guarantee that a bank can identify every AI-assisted scam.
