Autonomous AI agents use a model to interpret a task and decide what to do, then use a browser or other tools to act on that decision. A website can therefore become more than information for an agent: it can also be an attack surface. If the agent mistakes hostile page content for trusted instructions, its browser permissions may let that mistake cause an unwanted action or expose data.
How does an AI agent interact with a website?
A typical website task follows a loop: the user gives a goal, the agent reads relevant page content, the model decides what to do next, and a browser automation layer carries out actions such as clicking or typing. The agent may repeat that loop as it gathers information and works toward the goal. Products differ in how they divide planning, browsing, memory and action among their components.

The security question is not just what the model can understand. It is also what information it reads, which browser actions it can take, and what independent checks stand between its decision and a consequential action. NIST’s 2026 security request for information frames the distinctive issue as the combination of AI model outputs and software functionality. It also notes that security-harming behavior can occur without adversarial input.
How can a website trick an AI agent?
Indirect prompt injection is an attempt to smuggle instructions into material an agent is expected to process, such as a webpage, email or file. A user might ask an agent to summarize a page, while text on that page tells it to ignore the user’s goal and do something else. The attack exploits a weak boundary between trusted instructions that define the task and untrusted content the agent is meant to inspect.

Unlike a conventional web page, an agent may interpret text as guidance for what to do. If it cannot reliably distinguish page content from authoritative instructions, it may follow the attacker’s directions using its own permitted tools. OWASP identifies possible outcomes that include goal hijacking, tool misuse, unauthorized access and data exfiltration. These are different kinds of harm: an agent can be redirected, misuse a capability, access something it should not, or transmit data to a destination.
NIST’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) wrote in January 2025 that many AI agents were vulnerable to “agent hijacking,” a form of indirect prompt injection in which malicious instructions are inserted into data an agent may ingest. That observation describes a risk, not a claim that every agent will obey hostile content or that attacks succeed at a universal rate.
Can an AI browser read data from another site or tab?
Ordinarily, the browser same-origin policy restricts a site from reading or interacting with another origin. A University of Washington research page describes a proof-of-concept in which an agent’s behavior and a browser configuration combined to cross that boundary. In the reported setup, a malicious page embedded a cross-origin iframe. An agent asked to summarize the page was prompt-injected into entering sensitive cross-origin content into a form that submitted automatically.

The demonstration had important prerequisites: the sensitive page had to allow framing, and browser cookie policy had to permit the scenario. The researchers also discussed a reverse arrangement involving a malicious embedded frame. The point is not that a website can simply bypass the same-origin policy, or that every agent can read every site. Rather, successful injection can potentially turn an agent into a bridge between content from different origins when browser and page conditions allow it.
The University of Washington page says the team examined seven agentic browsers and demonstrated cross-origin theft on ChatGPT Atlas in Agent Mode. It also reports that preconditions for attacks existed in Chrome with Gemini, Claude for Chrome and Perplexity Comet if injection succeeded. The tests took place in late January and early February 2026, using then-latest stable releases on macOS Sequoia. These are version- and time-specific findings; browser and agent updates may change the results.
What could go wrong—and what do the tests show?
Depending on the agent’s permissions and the circumstances, risks include taking an action the user did not request, disclosing information through an authorized tool, misusing privileges, or performing a consequential operation without suitable review. OWASP’s agent-security guidance also covers risks beyond malicious web text, including privilege escalation, memory poisoning, excessive autonomy, high-impact action abuse, approval manipulation and cascading failure.

Evidence from evaluations needs careful interpretation. A 2025 NIST CAISI technical article reports that its team used AgentDojo and custom scenarios and frequently induced the tested agent to follow malicious instructions across three new risk areas. NIST recommends expanding shared evaluation frameworks, updating red-team tests as systems change, measuring attack performance for the task at hand, and testing across multiple attempts. Its results are tied to the systems and evaluation setup available at that time.
The March 2026 WASP paper distinguishes between an agent beginning an adversarial instruction and completing the attacker’s objective. Its figures are benchmark results, not estimates of real-world incidents or of all deployed agents.
| WASP benchmark measure | Reported result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Tested agents began executing adversarial instructions | 16–86% of evaluated cases | Starting the adversarial instruction is not the same as achieving the attacker’s goal. |
| Tested agents completed the attacker’s objective | 0–17% of evaluated cases | This measures completion of the objective within the paper’s benchmark, not the prevalence of successful attacks in real use. |
OWASP says more than 100 researchers, practitioners, user organizations and technology providers contributed input to its 2025 Top 10 for Agentic Applications. That number describes the development of the taxonomy; it is not a measure of how often attacks occur.

How should agent and browser safeguards be evaluated?
No single prompt filter can address every way a model, page and browser capability can interact. NIST’s guidance emphasizes limiting and monitoring access in deployment, alongside evaluation that adapts as systems change. When assessing a particular agent, examine the controls as a set:
- Input trust boundaries: Does the system treat page text, reviews, iframe content and other retrieved material as untrusted data rather than instructions?
- Origin scope: Can it read or act across origins? Is access restricted to sites needed for the task?
- Action authority: Which actions can it take, especially financial, administrative, externally visible or difficult-to-reverse actions?
- Independent review: Is a proposed action checked by a separate, higher-trust component? What information can that reviewer see?
- Human confirmation: Which consequential actions require the user’s approval?
- Data handling: Can sensitive content flow from a page or cross-origin context into a form, message, API call or other destination?
- Evaluation quality: Are attacks tested in realistic but isolated settings, across repeated attempts, with task-specific outcomes and versions current to the deployment?
Google’s December 2025 description of Chrome’s agent design says its planner uses page content to select actions and an isolated critic reviews proposed actions. Google also describes origin restrictions, confirmation for critical steps, real-time threat detection and red-team response as defenses. These are Google’s account of its own implementation, not a universal architecture or proof that prompt injection is solved. The company’s security team called indirect prompt injection “the primary new threat facing all agentic browsers.”

What should users and builders take away?
An agent’s exposure depends on the combination of content it consumes and authority it receives. A hostile instruction in a page is more consequential when the agent can reach sensitive origins, submit data or carry out high-impact actions without a meaningful check. For builders, the practical design goal is to limit origin access and tool privileges to what a task needs, review consequential actions independently, require user approval where appropriate, and keep testing as models, browsers and websites change.
For users, treat browser agents as software with delegated permissions, not as passive readers. The important question is not simply whether an agent can be fooled; it is how far a mistaken instruction can travel before the browser or a human stops it.
