If the job system and turn-based battles are what you want to keep, try the Bravely Default series. For a very different kind of combat, consider Triangle Strategy. These are preference-based picks, not a universal ranking: each shares some appeal with Octopath while changing other parts of the experience.
Choose by what you want to keep from Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler II brings together eight travelers with distinct origins and skills in an HD-2D presentation that Square Enix describes as retro pixel art fused with 3D CG. Its Path Actions let characters interact with townspeople in different ways, including obtaining items and recruiting help; its job and skill development and Break and Boost systems shape its party-based, turn-based battles. The best next game depends on which of those elements mattered most to you.

| If you want… | Try… | What changes from Octopath |
|---|---|---|
| A similar HD-2D look | Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake | The visual approach is a close point of connection; do not expect Octopath’s story or battle structure to be the same. |
| HD-2D presentation in a different package | Live A Live | It is another community-suggested option associated with the visual appeal, but offers a different experience. |
| Job flexibility and turn-based combat | Bravely Default | Its Brave/Default actions and job system are the draw; the presentation is not an attempt to reproduce Octopath. |
| A tactical strategy RPG | Triangle Strategy | It is an adjacent HD-2D-associated pick, but tactical-grid battles are a different format from Octopath’s party combat. |
For more of the HD-2D look: Dragon Quest III or Live A Live
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
Choose this first if the blend of expressive pixel art and dimensional environments is the main thing you want to revisit. Its HD-2D presentation makes it a natural visual-style neighbor to Octopath. That similarity is about presentation, not a promise of the same multi-traveler structure, Path Actions, or Break and Boost combat.
Live A Live
Live A Live is another option raised by players discussing what to play after Octopath. It makes sense if you want to stay near the HD-2D visual territory while moving to a distinct game. The available sources do not establish that it duplicates Octopath’s jobs, story format, or battle mechanics, so treat it as a stylistic follow-up rather than a direct substitute.
#1 Best Overall
- The games that inspired a generation come to life once more, in the ultimate 2D pixel remaster!
- These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.
- The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.
- Universally updated 2D pixel graphics, including the iconic FINAL FANTASY character designs created by Kazuko Shibuya, the original artist and current collaborator.
- Beautifully rearranged soundtrack in a faithful FINAL FANTASY style, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.
For jobs and turn-based battles: Bravely Default
If character builds and party combat were your favorite parts, explore the Bravely Default series. Square Enix describes its job system alongside Brave and Default actions, making it a relevant match for players who enjoy planning turn-based combat and adjusting roles. The appeal is mechanical: it is not a claim that the games share Octopath’s presentation or traveler-led story structure.
Check the exact release and platform edition before buying. The available official description supports these mechanics at series level; it does not establish current editions or availability for every entry. Bravely Default II is a reasonable title to look up when searching for a concrete entry, but confirm its platform and edition in your region before purchasing.
Rank #2
- Jump through a colorful world and give attacks some extra oomph in battle!
- Explore the vibrant environments with your party and jump towards your next goal!
- Run into monsters to enter turn-based battles with your party of three.
- Press the button at the right time for a satisfying dose of extra damage or helpful guard.
For tactical battles: Triangle Strategy
Try Triangle Strategy if you are open to changing the combat format rather than seeking another party-based battle system. It is a community-suggested adjacent pick associated with HD-2D, but its tactical strategy orientation means it should not be approached as an Octopath combat clone. Choose it for a shift toward tactical decision-making, not because the two games play alike.

These four games are useful starting points surfaced in player discussion and supported by the specific feature descriptions available for Octopath and Bravely Default. The match is subjective, so use the shared feature—not an assumed overall ranking—to choose:
Rank #3
- Signs of the end times draw powerful heroes from all over sanctuary to rise up and defeat an evil reborn
- Challenge death itself as maltha-angel of death-attempts to harness the infernal powers of the black soul stone
- Commanding the powers of blood, bone, and armies of undead, the Necromancer joins the fight
- Supported play modes-TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode. Game file size:15.7 GB
- Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake: prioritize this for HD-2D presentation.
- Live A Live: consider it for another distinct game in the HD-2D conversation.
- Bravely Default: prioritize this for flexible jobs and turn-based battle systems.
- Triangle Strategy: choose this if you want a tactical-strategy change of pace.
What the series does—and does not—tell you about choosing a follow-up
Square Enix’s official Octopath Traveler II feature description identifies the game’s eight travelers, HD-2D presentation, Path Actions, and battle and progression systems. Its Path Actions include ways to battle townspeople, obtain items, and take others along. Those details help explain why the recommended games appeal to different Octopath fans: some echo the look, while others are closer in combat or offer a deliberate format change.
Community discussion is useful for discovering candidates, not for proving an objective ranking. One thread asks what to play after the first two games and mentions Dragon Quest remakes, Triangle Strategy, Live A Live, and Bravely Default; it is a set of player suggestions rather than a consensus list. Octopath Traveler had sold over three million copies worldwide as of Square Enix’s August 2022 announcement, but that dated figure is context about the first game’s reach—not a current sales total, a sequel figure, or a measure of which follow-up is best.
