Auction specialists assess a game-worn claim by weighing an item’s provenance, construction, condition and wear against records, photographs and relevant exemplars. Authentication is not the same as valuation: an opinion about who used an item or when does not guarantee what it will sell for. Value depends on the object, the strength of its history and evidence, and the purpose and context of the valuation.
How do auction houses authenticate game-worn memorabilia?
There is no single test that applies to every jersey, shoe, bat or helmet. Specialists typically look at several kinds of evidence and consider whether they support the specific claim being made—for example, that an athlete wore an item, or that it was used in a particular game.

Provenance and supporting records
Provenance is the documented history of an item: who owned it, how it changed hands, and what is known about its use. Receipts, letters, team or league records, prior sale records and other supporting documents can help establish that history. Sotheby’s says prospective consignors can submit images and background information, including supporting documentation, for specialists to review before deciding whether an item is appropriate for an upcoming auction.

Photographic matching
Photomatching compares distinctive features on an object with details visible in a photograph from a game or event. Resolution Photomatching describes examples such as mesh holes aligning with jersey numbering, a unique mark on a bat, or a scratch on a helmet. A match can support a claim about a specific item’s use, but the strength of the conclusion depends on the image, the features matched and the service’s stated scope. Read the actual letter or report rather than treating the phrase “photomatched” as a complete description of what was established.

Construction, condition and comparison
Specialists may compare an item with known examples, or exemplars, and examine its labels, materials, construction, completeness, originality, alterations and wear. The factors depend on the item and the provider. MEARS, for example, lists jersey characteristics, wear, number of games, style and player position among considerations in its published criteria. Photo-Match.com describes exemplar-driven comparisons and graded letters; those descriptions explain that provider’s approach, not a universal industry standard.
MEARS’s published jersey criteria say: “The jersey must be complete, unaltered, all original, and show optimal wear while remaining in the same condition as last worn by player.” The criteria page identifies copyright 2004–2019, so this is best understood as MEARS’s published guidance, not a newly issued industry-wide rule. MEARS also says an “Unable To Authenticate” conclusion can mean a feature cannot be verified or more information is needed; it does not necessarily mean an item is fake.

Check exactly what the opinion covers
An authentication or grading opinion may address an item’s traits, attribution or claimed use, but its scope varies by issuer. MEARS explicitly describes its evaluation as an opinion about an item’s characteristics and disclaims responsibility for its market value. A letter supporting a game-use claim is not a promise of a particular auction result.

- Attribution and specificity of use: How well the evidence supports the named athlete’s use, and whether it ties the object to a particular game or event.
- Provenance: Whether the ownership history is coherent and supported by records.
- Historical context: The importance of the athlete, event or moment. Heritage Auctions frames the question as, “What makes a collectible exceptional within the specific category?”
- Item attributes and condition: Completeness, originality, alterations and wear can matter differently across categories. Wear may support a use claim, while damage or later changes raise separate condition questions.
- Sale context: The likely audience and venue, and whether the comparison is an estimate or a completed sale for a genuinely similar object.
The sources do not establish a reliable market-wide premium for photomatching, provenance or any particular level of wear. Authentication does not automatically multiply an item’s value, and a high-profile result should not be treated as a prediction for another object.
What auction results can—and cannot—tell you
Completed sales provide context, but each result belongs to the described lot and its sale. For example, SCP Auctions’ 2025 Summer Premier catalog listed these realized prices:

| Catalog lot | Listed realized price | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Kobe Bryant rookie game-worn shoe | $240,000 | A result for that specific lot, not a general value for game-worn shoes. |
| Lionel Messi match-worn, photomatched jersey | $60,000 | A result for that specific lot, not a general value for photomatched jerseys. |
When comparing two items or estimates, check whether the objects share a category, athlete or level of historical significance; how specific and strong their authentication evidence is; their provenance, completeness and condition; and whether the figures are estimates or completed sales from comparable venues and dates.
Which kind of valuation do you need?
“Value” depends on the purpose. The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute distinguishes among retail replacement value for insurance, sale price and value for estate distribution; these can produce different answers. The result may also depend on the appraiser and whether the object is examined in person.

For an auction estimate, Sotheby’s invites owners to send images and background information for specialist review and a complimentary estimate. That is an initial assessment of auction suitability and likely estimate—not a guarantee that the house will accept the item, that it will sell, or that it will reach a particular price.
What should you send for a sports memorabilia auction estimate?
A well-organized request gives a specialist a clearer starting point. Before contacting an auction house or appraiser, gather:
- A description of the item and its dimensions.
- What you know about its history, including prior owners, dates and events.
- Receipts, letters, team or league records, prior sale records, and any authentication, grading or photomatching paperwork.
- Clear, high-resolution photographs of the full item and relevant details, such as labels, marks, wear or repairs.
- The purpose of the valuation: a possible auction sale, insurance replacement or another need.
The Smithsonian recommends documenting textiles in photographs with a scale. If a textile is framed, do not remove it if you are unfamiliar with how it is mounted. Ask the specialist what additional records are useful and whether an in-person examination is necessary.

Do not assume that cleaning or repairing a mark will improve a collectible. Museum Textile Services notes that stains and damage can be part of the story told by sports memorabilia. Consult a qualified textile conservator before cleaning, repairing or remounting a significant piece; do not use pressure-sensitive tape on memorabilia, as the National Museum of Australia advises.
For storage or display, the National Museum of Australia recommends a cool, dry, well-ventilated environment, protection from intense light, and suitable stable archival materials. A framed textile should have space between the fabric and the glazing, as well as support and protection from dust. The Canadian Museum of History describes mounting a game-worn hockey jersey with a stable polyester separator between the textile and its potentially acidic original backing board—a reminder that an ordinary decorative frame is not automatically conservation-grade.
