USB version labels alone don’t predict real file-copy speed. Start by testing the drive in a direct port and comparing another drive or computer before changing settings or replacing hardware.
Why USB file transfers slow down
A copy travels through several components: the computer, its USB port, any hub or adapter, and the flash drive’s controller and storage. The slowest part can constrain the transfer. A busy shared hub or a slower connection can therefore matter just as much as the drive itself.

USB standards describe signaling capabilities, not guaranteed file-copy rates. Microsoft’s legacy USB 2.0 hub article lists maximum rates of 1.5 Mbps, 12 Mbps, and 480 Mbps for its USB speed classes. Those are protocol-era maxima, not expected speeds for copying files to a flash drive; the article covers older Windows versions and does not establish that the same hub issue is a current Windows 11 problem. The workload also affects how a copy feels. Many small files require many file operations, while a few large files follow a different pattern. The available sources do not quantify the speed difference, so neither pattern by itself identifies a fault.

How to narrow down the cause

Observe what the transfer does
Check whether the copy is slow from the beginning, drops after an initial burst, stalls, or affects only certain files. These patterns are clues, not proof of a particular cause. Note whether you are copying one large file or many small ones.

Test the connection path
If practical, connect the drive directly to a computer port instead of a hub or dock, then try another suitable port. Check that a USB-C adapter or hub is appropriate for both the computer and the drive. A slower link or busy shared hub can constrain a transfer, though Microsoft’s cited hub guidance is legacy and should not be read as a diagnosis of a modern Windows problem.

Compare another drive or computer
If one is available, try the same drive on another computer, or another drive on the same computer. This practical cross-check can help separate a drive limitation from a problem somewhere in the host-and-connection path; it is not a formal benchmark.

Pay attention to errors and disconnects
Repeated disconnects, unreadable files, or copy errors are reliability symptoms, not just speed complaints. If the data matters, stop repeated writes and make a backup before attempting repairs or formatting. The sources cited here do not establish a particular diagnostic utility or recovery procedure.

What to do—and what not to change
Use the connection and comparison tests first. Reformatting, changing write-cache settings, or editing the registry is not a universal speed fix. Formatting can erase files, so back up anything important before changing a drive’s filesystem. Microsoft’s separate USB/SD guidance about write caching and filesystems is Windows 7-era material, not a general optimization guide for current Windows systems: Microsoft’s USB and SD storage article.
If the drive remains the slow component across suitable ports and computers, replacement may be reasonable. Compare independent sustained-write tests—not just advertised peak interface rates—and look for results relevant to both large-file and small-file use. Check that the drive’s connector and advertised USB generation suit your computer. A new drive will not fix a bottleneck caused by a port, hub, adapter, or host.

Eject the drive safely after copying
Wait for writes to finish before disconnecting the drive. On Windows, select the taskbar’s Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media control, choose the drive, and wait for the safe-to-remove notification. Microsoft says, “To avoid losing data, always safely remove hardware devices like USB flash drives or external hard drives before disconnecting them.” This protects data; it does not speed up an active transfer.
