Researchers have proposed a way to build a bosonic fractional quantum Hall fluid by coherently transferring atoms from a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) into a separate, strongly interacting atomic system. In the June 16, 2026 preprint Adiabatic preparation of a fractional quantum Hall fluid by coherently pumping atoms from a Bose-Einstein condensate (arXiv:2606.15951), the authors assess the protocol numerically. It is a theoretical proposal, not a preparation method demonstrated in an experiment.
What “pumping” means in this proposal
The atoms are not pushed through a pipe or driven by an ordinary mechanical pump. “Pumping” here means controlled, coherent transfer between two atomic states: a large, dilute BEC acts as a reservoir, and atoms are moved from it into a distinct target state where they interact strongly.

The target is a rotating, effectively two-dimensional gas. The proposed coupling uses two Raman beams; one has a Laguerre–Gaussian profile, a shaped light pattern that can transfer angular momentum. This lets the coupling address not only whether atoms change state, but also the angular momentum they carry as they enter the target system.
How the proposed preparation proceeds
Start with an empty target and a BEC reservoir
A Bose–Einstein condensate forms when a sufficiently dilute gas is cooled so that many bosonic atoms occupy a common, coherent quantum state. In this scheme, the condensate is kept distinct from the strongly interacting state intended to host the quantum fluid. It supplies atoms as the target state is populated.

Control the Raman coupling and detuning
The authors propose changing the strength of the coherent coupling and its detuning over time. Detuning is the offset between the applied light’s frequency and the transition it addresses. Together, these controls guide atoms from the reservoir into the target while the Raman light supplies the required angular-momentum-selective transfer.
Follow an adiabatic path toward the Laughlin state
The intended endpoint is the bosonic 1/2 Laughlin state, a model fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state. Rather than suddenly switching on the interaction and hoping the system settles into the desired state, the protocol aims to change the system slowly enough for it to follow the evolving quantum state. The paper’s design seeks to keep an adiabatic energy gap open throughout that evolution. Anharmonic confinement—confinement that departs from a purely harmonic potential—is an important part of the proposed scheme.

What makes the approach different
The paper contrasts its strategy with number-conserving preparation schemes that rely on finite-size-induced topological gaps. In the proposed route, the system can gain atoms through the reservoir, tracing a path through different particle-number sectors (a Fock-space path). The authors’ aim is to avoid crossing a topological phase transition while maintaining the gap needed for adiabatic preparation. This is a distinction in the preparation strategy, not evidence that one method has been experimentally shown to outperform another.

The June 2026 work is a numerical assessment of a proposed protocol. Its abstract says the assessment reaches particle numbers beyond the experimental state of the art, but does not give a general-purpose particle count in that statement. That relative result should not be read as proof that the method is ready to prepare a larger fluid in a laboratory.

The Pitaevskii BEC Center publication listing identifies the paper and associates it with arXiv:2606.15951. A Quantum Zeitgeist summary dated October 12, 2026, also describes it as a proposal. Neither the listing nor the summary establishes an experimental realization of this particular pumping method. The apparatus and the required control of interactions, confinement and coherent transfer remain part of the proposed research setup.

Fractional quantum Hall states are strongly correlated quantum fluids: their behavior arises from collective interactions among particles, rather than from treating each atom independently. Ultracold atoms offer researchers a controllable setting in which to investigate such states. A way to populate the target gradually while preserving the conditions needed for adiabatic evolution could therefore provide a useful route to studying FQH physics in atomic systems.

The paper’s authors describe their idea as a protocol to “adiabatically prepare a many-particle fractional quantum Hall fluid of bosonic ultracold atoms” by coherently coupling a strongly interacting atomic state to a large, dilute BEC. Any broader applications, including possible relevance to photonics mentioned in contemporary coverage, remain prospects rather than demonstrated outcomes of this work.
