China’s smartphone shipments fell 15.4% year over year to 57.9 million units in Q3 2026, marking the market’s sixth consecutive quarterly decline. Huawei led with 12.2 million shipments and 21% share, while Apple ranked second with 17.8% share, according to IDC figures reported by Reuters.
How the major vendors performed
The Q3 figures describe shipments, not retail sell-through, revenue, profitability, consumer preference, or a ranking of phone quality. IDC’s figures were reported by Reuters; the accessible Q3 report does not provide a detailed methodology note or say whether the estimates are preliminary or final.

| Vendor | Q3 2026 result | What the report establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Huawei | 12.2 million shipments; 21% share | The only major vendor reported to have double-digit growth; an exact growth rate was not stated. |
| Apple | 17.8% share; shipments down 4.3% year over year | Second by share among the vendors identified in the report. |
| Oppo | Shipments down 17.6% year over year | Q3 share was not stated in the report. |
| Vivo | Shipments down 24.9% year over year | Q3 share was not stated in the report. |
| Xiaomi | Shipments down 20.4% year over year | Q3 share was not stated in the report. |
All Q3 vendor figures in the table are IDC data as reported by Reuters on October 13, 2026. The available figures do not support calculating Huawei’s growth rate or comparing vendor revenue.
Why shipments fell
Reuters’ account of the IDC report points to weak consumer spending alongside rising memory-chip and other component costs. IDC Research Analyst Arthur Guo said vendors had passed higher costs on to consumers, lifting retail prices as shipments shrank. The report does not quantify the separate contribution of spending and component costs to the decline.

IDC’s earlier-quarter reporting also described cost pressure, but those details belong to their respective periods. In Q2, IDC cited fading government subsidies; it also reported that smartphone sales during China’s 618 shopping festival fell close to 15% year over year. In Q1, IDC described rising memory and component costs and supply constraints, with vendors prioritizing higher-end devices. Those earlier reports offer context for the year’s pressures, not a measurement of how much any one factor drove Q3 shipments.
How Q3 fits the 2026 decline
IDC’s Q3 report called this the sixth straight quarterly decline. Its Q2 analysis had described a fifth consecutive decline, so the sequence advances by one quarter.

|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | About 69.0 million | Down 3.3% | IDC Q1 analysis, April 15, 2026 |

| Q3 2026 | 57.9 million | Down 15.4% | Reuters report reproduced by KSL, October 13, 2026 |
The figures show a sharper year-over-year contraction in Q3 than in the first two quarters, while shipment totals also decreased quarter to quarter. Year-over-year rates compare each quarter with the same quarter a year earlier; they are not the same measure as sequential quarter-to-quarter change.

What the figures do—and do not—say
- Huawei’s lead is a shipment-share result, not evidence that it led in revenue, profit, retail sales, or product quality.
- Apple’s second-place share coexisted with a 4.3% year-over-year shipment decline.
- Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi all recorded shipment declines, with Vivo’s reported decline the largest of the three.
- The Q3 figures alone do not establish why individual buyers chose one brand, how many phones consumers bought at retail, or which handset is the best choice for a particular person.
