How Astronomers Image Star Clusters in Other Galaxies

Hubble and Webb provide complementary views of star clusters in other galaxies: one traces exposed populations, while infrared observations can reveal clusters still wrapped in dust.

Astronomers image star clusters in other galaxies by combining high-resolution optical and ultraviolet observations with infrared views that can penetrate dust. The images reveal where clusters are and how they appear; astronomers use their light, spectra, and surrounding gas maps to estimate ages and masses and to understand how clusters emerge from the clouds where they formed.

How do astronomers see star clusters in other galaxies?

A star cluster is a group of stars that formed within a cloud of gas and dust. Observing clusters beyond the Milky Way lets astronomers compare large populations across different galactic environments and stages of evolution. From inside our own galaxy, dust and our position within its disk limit the view across the whole system.

Images are evidence, but not the entire measurement. Astronomers combine observations at different wavelengths with spectroscopy and maps of molecular gas. Together, these data help connect clusters to their surroundings and trace star formation over time. Nearby clusters in the Milky Way and its satellites can be examined in finer detail, so studies of other galaxies complement rather than replace that close-up work. NASA describes how multiwavelength observations reveal different parts of the star-formation picture.

What do Hubble and Webb reveal?

Observatory What it observes What that helps reveal
Hubble Visible and ultraviolet light Exposed young stars and clusters; its high angular resolution can distinguish stars within some clusters.
Webb Infrared light Young clusters still embedded in dusty birth clouds, as well as populations that have partly emerged.

The observatories are complementary, not interchangeable. Dust can obscure young stars in visible light, while infrared observations can peer into dusty regions. In the FEAST study, Webb images showed embedded and partly emerged cluster populations, while Hubble optical images provided a view of unobscured populations. What either telescope can resolve depends on the target and observing conditions; wavelength alone does not determine the detail in an image. NASA explains Hubble’s role in observing star clusters.

Can Hubble resolve individual stars in another galaxy?

Sometimes. Hubble’s resolution can separate stars within clusters that would appear blended at lower resolution, but it does not resolve every cluster into individual stars. A 1994 Hubble study of super-star clusters in NGC 1569 and NGC 1705 found that clusters appearing point-like from the ground became partially resolved in Hubble images, while one remained barely resolved. The study measured half-light radii of 2.2–3.4 parsecs for three clusters; those values apply to those specific objects, not to star clusters generally. Read the 1994 Hubble study.

What does Webb see that Hubble cannot?

Webb’s infrared observations can reveal young clusters hidden by dust in visible-light images. That does not mean Webb supplies every measurement or always resolves more detail: astronomers use optical and ultraviolet observations, infrared images, gas maps, and spectroscopy together to study the cluster and its environment.

How do scientists tell whether a cluster is young?

Astronomers estimate cluster ages and masses from the light the stars emit and, where available, their spectra. They also compare the cluster’s position and appearance with surrounding gas and dust. An embedded cluster is still surrounded by its birth material; a partly emerged or exposed cluster has cleared or moved beyond some of that material. Combining these clues helps researchers study the sequence from formation to emergence rather than treating a galaxy image as a collection of bright dots.

A 2026 FEAST study using Webb identified nearly 9,000 clusters across M51, M83, NGC 628, and NGC 4449. In those galaxies, the most massive studied clusters emerged from their birth clouds after around five million years; less massive clusters were around seven to eight million years old when they emerged. These are approximate results for the studied populations, not universal timetables for every cluster. ESA’s report on the FEAST findings quotes lead author and programme principal investigator Angela Adamo: “These results give us important new constraints on that process.” NASA’s overview of the study gives additional context.

What can a cluster image—and what can’t it—tell you?

  • It can show the locations and apparent structure of clusters, including populations that optical images may miss because they are dust-embedded.
  • Combined with other data, it can help estimate cluster age and mass and relate the clusters to nearby gas and different stages of star formation.
  • It cannot by itself establish every property of a cluster. A composite image combines measurements; interpreting it requires the underlying observations and analysis.
  • It does not promise consumer-level resolution. The evidence here concerns professional observatory observations and scientific analysis; it does not establish that consumer equipment can resolve individual clusters in other galaxies.
