How Astronomers Detect Planets Around White Dwarfs

Astronomers detect white-dwarf planets through transits, infrared clues, imaging, microlensing and timing, but each method reveals different evidence and has limits.

Astronomers look for several kinds of evidence: a planet crossing the white dwarf and dimming it, extra infrared light from a companion or surrounding dust, a companion resolved in an image, or gravitational and timing effects. These signals do not all prove the same thing. A repeating transit can identify an orbiting body, while infrared excess or metals in a white dwarf’s atmosphere may instead point to a companion or to planetary material left behind after a planet was disrupted.

What counts as detecting a planet?

A planet can be detected indirectly: astronomers measure its effect on the star’s light, on a background star, or on the arrival times of pulses from a pulsar. Other observations identify material associated with planetary systems without showing that an intact planet is still orbiting. The distinction matters especially for white dwarfs, where dust, accreted debris, and faint companions can produce overlapping clues.

White dwarfs are the compact stellar remnants left after many stars exhaust their fuel. Their small radii can make a transit by a planet produce a deep dip, but their low luminosity makes them faint targets and a transit can last only minutes. Their near-featureless spectra can, on the other hand, make additional infrared light from a cool source easier to notice. The 2022 review of white-dwarf planet searches discusses these advantages and difficulties, and emphasizes that different detection methods probe different kinds of systems.

Method Signal measured What it can establish Main limitation
Transit photometry A recurring dip in the white dwarf’s light An orbiting body crossing the line of sight, if the signal is vetted and repeated Requires close alignment; events may last only minutes, and the star is faint
Infrared photometry and spectroscopy Infrared light beyond the expected stellar emission; spectral features from material A cool companion, dust, or evidence of accreted planetary material, depending on the signal Excess light and atmospheric metals do not by themselves prove an intact planet
Direct imaging Light from a companion separated from the white dwarf in an image A sufficiently bright companion at a resolvable separation Insensitive to many close, faint, or cool planets
Microlensing Magnification of a background star by a foreground lens system A planet’s gravitational contribution to a lensing event Events are rare and generally one-off, limiting follow-up
Pulsar timing Changes in the arrival times of regular pulsar pulses An orbiting companion inferred from the pulsar’s motion Applies to special pulsar systems, not ordinary isolated white dwarfs

How does transit photometry work?

When an orbiting body passes between a white dwarf and Earth, it blocks some of the star’s light. Astronomers search a light curve—a record of brightness over time—for a dip that recurs at a consistent interval. Because a white dwarf is much smaller than a typical star, an Earth-sized body can block a substantial fraction of its visible surface. That makes the dip potentially conspicuous, but it does not make the search easy: the star’s faintness limits the available signal, and exposures that are too long can blur an event lasting only minutes.

From a dip to a credible detection

A single dip is a candidate, not a planet confirmation. Instrumental effects, a background source, or another astrophysical event can imitate a transit. Repeated events with a consistent period, checks against those alternatives, and follow-up observations are needed to establish that the signal comes from an orbiting body and to assess what it is.

The 2022 review described WD 1856+534 b as the only white-dwarf exoplanet candidate discovered by transit at the time of its publication. That is a dated statement from that review, not a current census of all candidates.

What transit surveys might find

A 2019 study in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society modeled transit searches with the planned LSST survey. It simulated 3.5 million white dwarfs over ten years and considered companions with orbital periods shorter than ten days. For Ceres-sized through Earth-sized bodies, the authors estimated typical detection rates from 5 × 10−6 to 4 × 10−4. Under the study’s illustrative assumption that each size class occurred around every target (a 100 percent occurrence rate), that translated to approximately 50–4,000 detections. These are simulated yields, not observed planets or unconditional predictions; the results depend on the assumed occurrence rates and survey properties. The same study estimated rates around 10−3 for terrestrial planets in the continuously habitable zone under its model.

What can infrared light and spectra reveal?

Astronomers compare a white dwarf’s observed light across wavelengths with the emission expected from its surface. Extra infrared light—an infrared excess—can come from a cool stellar or substellar companion, a planet, or a dust disc. It flags something that needs explaining; it does not identify a planet on its own. Follow-up measurements, including spectroscopy, help determine what is emitting the light and whether the interpretation fits a companion, dust, or another source.

Atmospheric metals trace accreted material

Some white dwarfs show metals in their observable atmospheres. Because these elements do not remain there indefinitely, their presence can indicate that the star has recently accreted rocky debris, potentially from disrupted asteroids or planets. This is evidence about material in a planetary system, not proof that an intact planet survives in orbit.

A 2019 Spitzer/Hubble study illustrates why the measurements should not be treated as interchangeable. Three stars in its sample had infrared excesses attributed to debris discs, giving a nominal frequency of 1.5 percent for that sample; atmospheric metals were found in 45 ± 4 percent. The authors also reported that only one of 30 polluted white dwarfs had an infrared excess at 3–4 μm in the IRAC observations. These are results for that particular sample and observing setup, not universal rates for white dwarfs.

A JWST excess with more than one explanation

A peer-reviewed 2025 MEAD Survey II study reported excess emission from WD 0644+025 at 15 μm with a significance of 7.3σ and at 10 μm with a significance of 3.6σ. The authors said the signal “may be associated with either a planetary companion or a circumstellar dust disk.” One modeled companion interpretation had a mass of 6.8 Jupiter masses, a temperature of 261 ± 9 K, and an orbital distance under 11.8 au. Those values describe that model, not a secure measurement of a planet’s mass or orbit; the paper also discussed lower-mass possibilities for a close, isolated companion. The excess is a compelling candidate interpretation, but the available alternatives mean it should not be described as a confirmed planet.

When can astronomers image a companion directly?

Direct imaging attempts to separate the companion’s light from the white dwarf’s light in an image. White dwarfs are intrinsically faint compared with the stars they came from, which can improve the contrast with a companion, particularly in infrared observations. The method works best for companions that are bright enough and far enough from the star to be resolved. Distance, angular separation, temperature, mass, and the instrument’s sensitivity all affect whether a companion can be seen.

A 2002 study modeled infrared observations of suitable nearby targets with 8-m-class telescopes and estimated sensitivity to companions around 3 Jupiter masses or greater. That was a historical, model-based estimate for the targets and instruments considered, not a general capability claim for every telescope now in use.

The 2022 review identified WD 0806-661 b as a widely separated gas giant directly imaged in orbit around a white dwarf: approximately 8 Jupiter masses at roughly 2,500 au. A direct-imaging non-detection only constrains companions in the observed separation and brightness range. It cannot rule out planets that are too close to resolve, too faint to detect, or outside the observing setup’s sensitivity.

How can microlensing and pulsar timing find companions?

Microlensing measures gravity’s effect on a background star

If a foreground white-dwarf system passes close to the line of sight to a background star, its gravity can magnify the background star’s light. A planet can add a detectable feature to the lensing signal. Unlike a transit, microlensing does not require the planet to cross the white dwarf from our viewpoint, and unlike direct imaging it does not require the companion’s light to be resolved. But lensing events are generally rare and one-off, so it can be difficult to repeat an observation or characterize the system afterward. The 2022 review lists MOA-2010-BLG-477Lb, a 1.4-Jupiter-mass planet at about 2.8 au, as detected by microlensing around a white-dwarf lens system.

Pulsar timing tracks a system’s motion

A pulsar emits regular pulses. If it moves around a system’s center of mass because of an orbiting companion, the distance its pulses travel changes, shifting their arrival times. Careful timing can reveal that motion and allow astronomers to infer a companion. This method is relevant to special systems containing a pulsar and a white dwarf, not to ordinary isolated white dwarfs. The 2022 review lists PSR B1620-26 (AB) b, a 2.5-Jupiter-mass planet in a pulsar–white-dwarf binary.

Why are some claims stronger than others?

The key question is what the observation actually measures. A repeated, vetted transit can support the presence of an orbiting body. A directly resolved point of light can show a companion, though further evidence may be needed to determine its nature. A microlensing event or pulsar timing signal reveals gravitational effects. By contrast, infrared excesses and atmospheric metals may identify dust, a cool source, or material from a disrupted planetary system without demonstrating that an intact planet is present.

Radial velocity is not a mature detection channel for white-dwarf planets in the literature summarized by the 2022 review; that review reported no radial-velocity detections in the census it discussed. The available examples and evidence therefore should not be treated as a complete, up-to-date inventory of every white-dwarf planet or candidate.
