Astronomers do not usually watch a planet cross a star’s surface and disappear. They infer consumption from a sequence of changes—such as a flare, infrared-bright dust, unusual gas, or a companion’s changing orbit—and check whether those clues fit accretion or disruption better than competing explanations. The method depends on the system: a red dwarf taking material from a brown dwarf, a star engulfing a planet, and a white dwarf accreting planetary debris are different processes.
What does it mean for a dwarf star to consume a companion?
“Dwarf star” can refer to very different objects. A red dwarf is a small, low-mass star. A white dwarf is the compact remnant of a star. A brown dwarf is a substellar object: it is more massive than a planet but does not sustain ordinary hydrogen fusion like a star. When astronomers describe one object as consuming another, they may mean that material is transferred onto a star, that a planet spirals into a star, or that a compact white dwarf tears apart and accretes rocky debris.

These events are generally reconstructed from observations of their effects, not captured as a clear image of the companion entering the star. A single brightening, dust cloud, or X-ray signal is not proof by itself.

Which observations reveal a companion being consumed?
Optical brightness changes can flag an event
Wide-field optical surveys can find a sudden flare or eruption, or track recurring dips as orbiting material passes in front of a star. The light curve—the change in brightness over time—can show when an event began, whether it repeats, and how its shape evolves. Those patterns help identify a target for follow-up, but several kinds of stellar activity can produce a brightening.

Infrared light can reveal dust and event timing
Dust absorbs starlight and reradiates energy at infrared wavelengths, so infrared observations can expose material that is hard to see in visible light. In ZTF SLRN-2020, NEOWISE recorded infrared brightening about a year before the optical flash detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility. That sequence is consistent with dust forming before the visible event and helped support an engulfment interpretation.
Spectra identify gas and chemical elements
A spectrum spreads light by wavelength. It can reveal the composition, temperature, and motion of material around a star, or identify elements in a white dwarf’s atmosphere that should not remain there for long without replenishment. In Webb’s follow-up to ZTF SLRN-2020, NIRSpec detected a hot circumstellar molecular-gas disk that included carbon monoxide; cooler dust was found farther out. At WD 1145+017, heavy elements in the white dwarf’s atmosphere provide a separate clue that rocky material has been accreted.

X-rays and ultraviolet observations can expose otherwise hidden processes
Hot material falling onto a white dwarf can emit soft X-rays, but nuclear fusion on the white dwarf’s surface can also produce them. X-rays therefore need to be interpreted alongside the optical rise, the apparent size of the X-ray source, and evidence for or against outflows. Ultraviolet observations can add information about hot gas and chemical signatures, but a signal is useful only if it distinguishes the proposed process from alternatives.

What do the observed systems show?
| System and proposed process | Observed evidence | What remains inferred or uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| ZTF SLRN-2020: a likely planet spiraling into a star | The Zwicky Transient Facility detected an optical flash; NEOWISE recorded infrared brightening about a year earlier. Follow-up observations found cooler gas and dust, and Webb’s NIRSpec later detected a hot molecular-gas disk including carbon monoxide, with cooler dust farther out. NASA JPL reported the initial detection on 3 May 2023; NASA Science reported Webb’s follow-up on 10 April 2025. | The final plunge was reconstructed from its aftermath, not directly watched. Webb observations did not show the star as bright as expected for a swollen red giant, prompting a revised account: orbital decay likely brought a Jupiter-sized planet into a star that had not expanded as initially expected. |
| ZTF J0440+2325: a brown dwarf transferring material to a red dwarf | A Nature Astronomy report published 5 October 2026 gives an orbital period of 86.65 minutes. Measurements in five wavelength bands revealed a bright, hot spot on the red dwarf. | Modeling indicates steady direct mass transfer from the brown dwarf. That interpretation is based on the observed system and modeling; any projection of how long transfer continues is not a directly observed lifetime. |
| WD 1145+017: a white dwarf accreting disrupted rocky material | Irregular, changing transit shapes point to disintegrating material orbiting the white dwarf, while heavy elements in its atmosphere support accretion of planetary material. NASA described the case in its historical coverage of the system. | The combined clues support disruption and accretion, but the exact system history and evolution of the debris require interpretation. |
| HS 0209+0832: a white dwarf with a possible second-generation planet | A Nature Astronomy report published 5 October 2026 describes an unusual elemental mixture, including high zinc, copper, and niobium, but little silicon and no iron. The star’s brightness varies every 4.39 days. | A giant planet and accretion of its material are candidate explanations, not a confirmed ongoing-consumption event. The periodic change could instead reflect a day-night temperature contrast or an escaping-gas tail. |
How do astronomers distinguish consumption from other causes?
Researchers compare whether a proposed explanation accounts for the timing, spectrum, source size, and other observations together. The same signal can have different causes: for example, soft X-rays from a white dwarf can indicate accretion or surface fusion.

- Check the sequence. An infrared rise before an optical flash can support a picture in which dust forms before a visible eruption, as in ZTF SLRN-2020.
- Look for material and composition. Gas, dust, molecular signatures, or heavy elements in a white dwarf’s atmosphere can connect a brightness change to surrounding or accreted matter.
- Compare competing physical models. In the white-dwarf system ASASSN-16oh, investigators weighed the optical rise, X-ray source size, and lack of expected outflow evidence in arguing for accretion rather than surface fusion. NASA’s account of a separate white-dwarf tidal-disruption case cautioned that the interpretation was not ironclad.
- Separate a measurement from its explanation. A measured orbit, transit, spectrum, or brightness cycle is an observation. The proposed mass-transfer path, disrupted object, or long-term future of the system is an interpretation that may rely on modeling.
What can astronomers conclude—and what can’t they yet?
The strongest cases combine independent clues across time and wavelength. A signal can reveal that material is present or being heated without identifying its source or proving that a companion is currently being consumed. The distinction matters especially for new candidates such as HS 0209+0832, where both the planet and the explanation for the recurring brightness change remain uncertain.
These examples do not establish a general rate for how often dwarf stars consume companions. Individual detections and model-based projections are not population statistics.
