Returning to standing and walking challenges several systems at once: the brain must reinterpret balance signals, circulation must adjust to blood pooling lower in the body, and muscles and bones face weight-bearing loads again. NASA astronaut accounts describe everything from feeling wobbly for a couple of days to feeling mostly recovered within a few weeks.
Why does gravity feel different after a space mission?
In orbit, astronauts live in microgravity, not an environment where gravity is literally absent. The body and brain adapt to that setting. After landing, Earth’s gravity immediately changes how fluids move and how the body is loaded, while the nervous system must make sense of familiar balance and visual cues again. These adjustments can affect circulation, orientation, movement, and physical comfort at the same time.

Blood pressure can be harder to maintain while standing
Without gravity pulling fluids toward the legs, fluids shift toward the upper body in space. NASA’s Cardiovascular and Vision Laboratory estimates that approximately 2 liters move from the lower to the upper body upon entering weightlessness; the same NASA page says the body responds by reducing total blood volume. On return, gravity draws fluid toward the lower body. Some astronauts then have difficulty maintaining blood pressure and blood flow to the brain when upright. NASA calls this orthostatic intolerance; symptoms can include lightheadedness, feeling close to fainting, or fainting. NASA reports that more than 60% of astronauts can be affected if no countermeasures are used. NASA’s cardiovascular and vision overview describes crew countermeasures such as compression garments and fluid-loading protocols, which are managed procedures—not self-treatment instructions.
The brain has to readjust balance and orientation
The brain adapts to the sensory conditions of microgravity. NASA says astronauts rely primarily on vision to orient themselves in space, and that the brain must relearn how to use inner-ear balance signals after landing. For a time, visual and vestibular information may not work together as reliably as they did on Earth. NASA’s human-health reference describes possible sensorimotor effects including spatial disorientation, impaired postural control and locomotion, motion sickness, and fine-motor difficulties. NASA uses the term “terrestrial readaptation motion sickness” for symptoms associated with the transition back to Earth’s gravity.

Walking and ordinary tasks can feel unfamiliar
Astronauts may have trouble with balance, steadiness, hand-eye coordination, or visual perception immediately after landing. Even walking from a landing vehicle toward a habitat can be more demanding than it sounds. In an early postlanding walking test, NASA astronaut Andreas Mogensen said, “With eyes closed, it was almost impossible to walk in a straight line.” The task illustrates why a person might feel unsteady even when they can see where they are going. NASA describes postlanding testing and functional tasks in its account of studies of physical performance after spaceflight.
Muscles, bones, feet, and back feel Earth’s load again
Spaceflight can reduce aerobic capacity and muscle and bone strength. Astronauts exercise during flight to counter some of these changes, but returning to gravity means that feet, back, and muscles must once again support body weight. NASA’s body-in-space page says weight-bearing bones lose an average of 1% to 1.5% of mineral density per month during spaceflight; that is a general NASA figure, not a prediction for an individual or a claim that all bones change equally. NASA also notes that bone loss may not be fully corrected by rehabilitation. Returning astronauts have described sore feet and lower backs, hard seats feeling uncomfortable, a sense of heaviness, and smaller muscles needing to be retrained. NASA’s overview of the human body in space explains these changes.

How long does it take astronauts to readjust?
It varies by person and by the system involved. NASA’s September 9, 2025, collection of astronaut accounts includes Jasmin Moghbeli, who said, “I felt wobbly for the first two days,” and Loral O’Hara, who felt almost completely back to normal a week after returning. Satoshi Furukawa described his recovery this way: “Day by day, I recovered and got more stable.” After a 371-day mission, Frank Rubio said his feet and lower back were sore and that he felt mostly recovered within a couple of weeks. These accounts show examples of recovery over days to weeks; they do not establish a clinical norm or a formula for predicting an individual’s recovery from age, sex, fitness, or mission duration. NASA’s post-flight recovery accounts emphasize that each crew member has an individual timetable.

Postlanding tests check practical performance
NASA has used a seven-test Functional Task Test designed around mission-critical activities after gravity transitions. Such testing helps researchers study balance control and performance on tasks astronauts may need to complete after landing; it is not a consumer recovery program.

Research tracks several aspects of health
NASA’s CIPHER program comprises 14 studies collecting data before, during, and after flight. Its assessments include eye and vision exams, cognitive and spatial-reasoning tests, cardiovascular imaging, exercise and sensorimotor testing, and MRIs. A component evaluates postflight fitness during capsule egress and simulated suited surface tasks. The work is intended to improve understanding of crew performance and inform safeguards for future missions, rather than establish a proven rehabilitation treatment for every returning astronaut. See NASA’s CIPHER overview.
Exercise is a flight countermeasure, not a universal recovery prescription
Astronauts exercise in space to address changes in aerobic capacity, muscle and bone strength, and other functions. NASA also connects fitness with the ability to perform duties such as safely exiting a vehicle after landing. These measures are part of crew health and mission operations under professional oversight. NASA’s exercise overview describes the purpose of in-flight exercise; it should not be read as a prescription for readers to use compression garments, fluid loading, medication, or a particular exercise routine.

Is vision change the same as balance readaptation?
No. Balance and movement can be temporarily disrupted as the brain readapts to gravity, while spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a distinct set of vision-related findings associated with spaceflight. NASA’s Cardiovascular and Vision Laboratory says approximately 70% of crewmembers on long-duration missions of about six months on the International Space Station develop SANS findings. That figure concerns SANS during long-duration flight, not the share of astronauts who experience short-term postlanding balance symptoms. NASA says the syndrome’s cause and long-term implications remain under study. NASA’s cardiovascular and vision page discusses SANS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes Earth recovery predict what happens on Mars?
Not directly. Mars has partial gravity, and the mission conditions differ from a return to Earth. NASA treats adaptation to other gravity levels as an active research question, so Earth-return accounts cannot establish how an astronaut would recover after a Mars mission.
