Waves, streams, runoff and coastal sediment movement can then carry and redeposit that material. These pathways are documented at particular sites; they do not show that beaches generally are contaminated.
How asbestos reaches coastal sand
The basic sequence is source, release, transport and redeposition. A source may be natural rock or soil, or a product containing asbestos. Weathering, erosion, breakage, demolition or dumping can expose or release material. Water and moving sediment can carry it toward the shore or along the coast, where it may become part of beach deposits.

Each step matters. Ordinary wave action and shifting sand move sediment, but that movement is not evidence that asbestos is present. A local source must contain asbestos, and site-specific evidence is needed to establish whether asbestos-bearing material reached a particular beach. A report about a different coastline cannot establish the condition of a reader’s beach.
Natural sources: asbestos-bearing rock and soil
Asbestos is a group of fibrous minerals that occurs naturally in some rocks and soils. Where such deposits are exposed at the surface, weathering and erosion can release material. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), in its “Preventing Asbestos Exposure” guidance reviewed August 26, 2026, also identifies crushing rock and disturbing soil with natural asbestos deposits as possible ways fibers can be released.

Coastal erosion can expose or move naturally occurring material where the relevant geology exists. For example, erosion may wear away an asbestos-bearing outcrop or carry eroded soil toward a shore. But the presence of moving sand, cliffs or eroding land does not by itself indicate asbestos. Whether this pathway is plausible depends on local geology and whether asbestos is confirmed at the source or in the affected sediment.
The important distinction is between a transport process and a contaminant. Waves can move sand on any coast; only site evidence can show whether asbestos-bearing rock or soil contributed to that sand.
Human-made sources: asbestos-containing products and waste
Asbestos-containing products used in buildings and other structures can enter coastal settings if they are dumped, left in demolition debris, or incorporated into material placed near a shore. Cement products are a recurring subject in the coastal studies discussed here. When asbestos cement breaks down, fragments may be carried into beach deposits. The studies identify particular site histories and possible pathways, not a general condition shared by coastlines everywhere.

The same study reports a significant increase in dumping operations from 1992 to 2000. That is a finding about the site’s documented history, not a statistic for coastal dumping generally. Marechiaro demonstrates how dumping can create a source that coastal processes later redistribute; it does not establish that other beaches in Italy, or elsewhere, have the same history.
Possible source routes at Cape Peloro, Sicily
A 2024 study by Roberta Somma examines beach deposits containing asbestos cement material at Cape Peloro in Sicily. It discusses several possible origins for the well-rounded fragments found there: coastal landfills, direct abandonment along the coast, dumping in streams, and nonconforming material used in attempts to counter erosion or sediment shortages. These are proposed possibilities for that site, not confirmed explanations for every fragment or a checklist of causes that applies to all beaches.
The paper also describes the sampled sand’s mineral composition: quartz grains made up a reported 50–60%, and metamorphic lithics 40–50%. Those figures describe the composition of the sampled sand; they are not measurements of asbestos concentration and should not be used to infer the amount of asbestos in other sand.

Building remnants at Illinois Beach State Park
A 2019 Illinois Capital Development Board shoreline design report describes remnants of residential foundations and shoreline-protection structures offshore at Illinois Beach State Park. It says wave action broke up building materials and that beach sediments include asbestos-laden material. The report states that this contaminated sand was unsuitable for reuse as nourishment elsewhere.

This is a site-specific engineering report about shoreline conditions and material reuse, not a general health assessment for people visiting the park or a finding about beaches in other locations. Its discussion of asbestos bound in cement should not be treated as a blanket guarantee that any asbestos-containing material is safe under all conditions.
How waves, streams and sediment movement spread material
Once asbestos-containing debris or contaminated sediment is exposed, coastal processes can move it. Waves may break up structures or fragments and shift sediment along a shoreline. Runoff can wash material from nearby land into the coastal zone. Streams can carry dumped or eroded material toward the coast, while currents and alongshore sediment movement can redistribute deposits after they arrive.
The Taranto study documents erosion, transport and redeposition following dumping. The Illinois report describes wave-driven breakdown of building remnants and their contribution to beach sediment. At Cape Peloro, the study discusses streams and coastal processes among possible links between source locations and the fragments found on the beach. Together, these examples show how material can move; they do not establish a universal rate, distance or time for asbestos transport. The available sources do not quantify such a general rate.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt is also important to distinguish visible debris from fibers. A fragment of asbestos cement is not the same measurement as a concentration of free asbestos fibers in surrounding sand or air. Whether fibers have been released, and in what amount, depends on the material and site conditions. The mere presence of a fragment or a reference to asbestos in a regional report does not answer those questions.

What the pathway means for exposure and health
For most environmental exposure concerns, the key question is whether asbestos fibers become airborne and are breathed in. ATSDR explains that fibers can enter air when natural deposits or old products are disturbed. The amount that becomes airborne can depend on location, the material’s age and condition, weather and moisture, and how intensely it is disturbed. Potential risk also depends on the amount of asbestos in the air, how often and how long a person is exposed, and other individual factors.
That is why the discovery of asbestos-containing material does not, by itself, establish a person’s exposure or predict a health outcome. Nor does the fact that asbestos is mentioned in a report about another beach show that a local beach is contaminated or unsafe. A site-specific assessment is needed to establish the material present and evaluate actual exposure conditions. The cited studies do not provide a universal numerical risk estimate for beach visitors.
Do not touch, break, sweep or mechanically remove suspect fragments, and do not collect a personal sample. A 2025 study in Frontiers in Earth Science on beached asbestos cement waste at Cape Peloro warns that mechanical removal can risk releasing fibers. If a local beach has visible suspect debris or an official notice, follow posted restrictions and contact the responsible local environmental or public-health authority rather than attempting to assess or clean it yourself.

ATSDR advises people concerned about possible exposure to speak with a medical provider. That is general health guidance; a medical conversation does not replace an environmental site assessment, and a site report does not by itself diagnose an individual.

How to assess a concern about a particular beach
A useful evaluation separates what is suspected from what has actually been established. Appearance alone is not a reliable test: a fragment’s shape or color cannot confirm asbestos, and an absence of visible fragments does not establish that sediment is free of contamination. Local history can help identify a possible source, but it is not a substitute for site-specific evidence.
- Check current local notices. Follow closure signs, access restrictions and instructions from the authority responsible for the beach. Do not assume a restriction elsewhere applies locally, or that an old report describes current conditions.
- Report suspect debris without disturbing it. Give the responsible local environmental or public-health authority the location and a description from a safe distance. Do not pick up, break, sweep or transport fragments.
- Look for site-specific findings. Relevant evidence may include local geology, a documented source history, sampling of the material or sediment, and an official site notice. A study from another region is background on possible mechanisms, not proof about the beach in question.
- Keep material and exposure questions separate. Confirmation of asbestos-containing cement is not the same as a measured concentration of airborne fibers. The sampling method, what was sampled and the conditions at the site affect what a result can establish.
- Use qualified assessment for testing or remediation. Do not treat general guidance for industry testing sand in consumer products as a do-it-yourself protocol for beach sampling. Site-specific procedures should be directed by the responsible authority or qualified professionals.
These checks do not determine whether a beach is contaminated; they help readers avoid drawing conclusions from appearance, a distant case study or an unverified fragment. The local authority or qualified site assessor is the appropriate source for findings about a particular location.
What is known about how common beach asbestos is?
The studies cited here document asbestos-related coastal deposits at specific sites in Italy and Illinois, with different source histories and evidence types. They do not provide a representative estimate of how many beaches worldwide contain asbestos, and no population-level prevalence statistic is established by these sources. It would therefore be inaccurate to infer either that beaches are generally contaminated or that contamination is limited to the named locations.

The most defensible general conclusion is narrower: natural geology and human activity can supply asbestos-bearing material; erosion and water movement can carry and redeposit it; and exposure concerns depend on site conditions, especially whether fibers become airborne. Establishing whether any one beach is affected requires evidence from that place.
