Prediction markets trade contracts tied to the outcome of a defined event; traditional futures trade standardized contracts tied to an underlying commodity or financial instrument. Both are derivatives, but their reference points, settlement, risk-management features and trading rules differ. The exact contract matters: an event contract is not automatically a simple probability bet, and a futures contract does not always end in physical delivery.
What does each market trade?
Prediction-market event contracts
An event contract is defined by an event or outcome and the terms used to settle it. Depending on the contract, outcomes may be yes/no, one of several choices, or a range with partial payouts. Examples described by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) include economic indicators, corporate earnings and snowfall. The contract rules identify what event counts and how the outcome is determined. CFTC overview of prediction markets

Traditional futures contracts
A futures contract is a standardized agreement to buy or sell an underlying commodity or financial instrument at a future date under exchange-set specifications. Some futures are settled in cash; others may involve delivery. A futures position is therefore linked to the price and terms of its underlying, rather than simply to whether a separately defined event occurs. CFTC futures basics

How the contracts differ
| Feature | Prediction-market event contract | Traditional futures |
|---|---|---|
| Reference | A specified event, occurrence or outcome. | An underlying commodity or financial instrument, with specifications set by the exchange. |
| Value and payout | May pay according to a binary outcome, a multiple-choice result or a range with partial outcomes. The specific payout is set by the contract. | Value changes with the futures price. The contract may settle in cash or through delivery, according to its terms. |
| Common market purpose | A position on an event outcome; prices may also convey market-implied expectations, but should not be treated as a guaranteed or necessarily reliable forecast. | Can help producers and consumers manage price risk; speculators also trade futures. CFTC explanation of futures’ economic purpose |
| Exiting before settlement | The CFTC says customers may trade out before settlement at the then-current market price. Whether that is practical depends on liquidity and venue rules. | A position may be offset before delivery. The CFTC describes, for example, a farmer buying back a futures contract while selling the crop locally. |
| Margin and clearing | Collateral and other account arrangements are contract- and venue-specific; do not assume a single model applies to all event contracts. | Futures traders post initial margin. Exchange-traded futures are cleared through a clearing house, and accounts are adjusted to current market value. |
| Oversight | In the United States, treatment depends on the product and venue. CFTC materials discuss CFTC-regulated exchanges and designated contract market registration. | In the United States, commodity futures generally trade on regulated exchanges, subject to exceptions and applicable registration rules. |
These are useful categories, not mutually exclusive legal labels in every case. A contract’s legal treatment depends on its terms, venue and jurisdiction.

How event contracts and futures settle
Event contracts
Settlement follows the event definition and payout terms in the contract. Check the rules for the exact outcome being measured, the source used to determine that outcome, and the payment for each possible result. A headline such as “Will X happen?” is not enough to establish how a contract resolves: the contract may define a cutoff, data source or other condition that affects settlement.
Futures
Futures settle according to their specifications, either in cash or through delivery where applicable. Traders may offset positions before delivery, but that is different from the contract’s final settlement method. Read the product specifications rather than assuming every futures contract requires a buyer to take physical possession of an asset.

What a market price does—and does not—tell you
An event-contract price can reflect participants’ views about an outcome, but it is not automatically an objective probability. Liquidity, fees and contract mechanics can affect the price and what a trader can realize. Futures prices likewise refer to the underlying contract and its terms; they are not directly comparable to a yes/no event payout without accounting for those differences.

What to check before trading
- Read the rulebook and contract terms. Identify the settlement conditions, payout, and who or what determines the outcome.
- Understand how you can exit. Trading out before settlement depends on a willing counterparty, market liquidity and venue rules; the ability to close a position is not guaranteed.
- Check margin and account adjustments. Futures use initial margin and account adjustments as prices change. For event contracts, verify the specific venue’s collateral and account rules.
- Confirm the applicable oversight. Product and venue rules vary. In the United States, the CFTC’s April 2026 fact sheet advises readers to review exchange rulebooks and contract terms. CFTC fact sheet, April 2026
- Distinguish a proposal from a rule in force. A CFTC document published in March 2026 is a proposed rule, not settled law. Specific legal treatment should be checked for the contract and jurisdiction at issue. CFTC proposed-rule document, March 2026
