The surviving systems are not all alike—astronomers have found evidence for a giant planet on a wide orbit and studied another giant planet on an extremely close orbit that likely moved inward later. The difference is therefore less a single planet type than a different history of survival, migration and detection.
What changes when a Sun-like star becomes a white dwarf?
A Sun-like star spends most of its life fusing hydrogen in its core. Late in its life, it swells into a red giant, sheds its outer layers and leaves behind a dense, hot remnant: a white dwarf. The remnant no longer sustains ordinary core fusion and gradually cools. NASA describes this stellar life cycle and its consequences for planetary systems in Chapter 7: Death and New Life.

The red-giant phase can engulf and destroy planets in close orbits. Farther out, planets may survive, while their gravity can redirect smaller bodies toward the remnant. Those bodies can be torn apart or accreted, leaving traces in the white dwarf’s surroundings. A planet around a white dwarf may therefore be a survivor of stellar evolution, a body that migrated later, or—if confirmed—a planet whose origin is not yet clear.

Evidence comes in different forms, and debris should not be mistaken for an intact planet. White dwarfs with heavy elements in their atmospheres are interpreted as having recently accreted planetary material, because those elements would otherwise sink. Dusty disks and polluted spectra reveal disrupted material and planetary dynamics; on their own, they do not establish that an intact planet was detected. NASA’s account traces early evidence in the spectrum of van Maanen’s Star and later discoveries of transiting debris.

A giant planet on a wide orbit
A study recorded by NASA’s Technical Reports Server describes MOA-2010-BLG-477Lb: a planet with a mass of 1.4 ± 0.3 Jupiter masses orbiting a white dwarf with a mass of 0.53 ± 0.11 solar masses. Its projected separation is 2.8 ± 0.5 astronomical units (AU); the study notes that the planet’s semi-major axis is larger than that projected separation. The authors treat the system as evidence that a giant planet can survive the star’s red-giant and asymptotic giant phases. See the NASA Technical Reports Server record.
WD 1856 b: a giant planet very close to its white dwarf
NASA reports that WD 1856 b transits its white dwarf every 34 hours, at a separation of less than 3 million kilometers. Webb transit data gave the planet a mass range of four to eleven Jupiter masses and a temperature of about 126°C. It is hotter than the white dwarf’s illumination alone would predict. Webb also detected signatures of small cloud particles and hydrocarbons, most likely methane; NASA describes this as the first atmospheric observation of a planet transiting a dead star. Details are in NASA’s account of Webb’s observations.

Two other objects remain candidates
A 2024 JWST preprint reported two giant-planet candidates around metal-polluted white dwarfs, at projected separations of 11.47 and 34.62 AU, with estimated masses of roughly one to seven Jupiter masses. The authors called them candidates and said future observations were needed for confirmation. They should not be counted as confirmed planets on the basis of that report. See Mullally et al.’s preprint.

Why can a planet orbit so close to a white dwarf?
If WD 1856 b had always been at its current distance, it would have been destroyed during the red-giant stage. NASA’s explanation draws on the planet’s residual heat and cooling models: it likely began farther out and moved inward much later. That is a model-based account for this system, not a demonstrated route shared by every planet around a white dwarf. The history of WD 1856 b is discussed in NASA’s Webb report.

The wide-orbit microlensing result and the close-in transiting planet illustrate different possible configurations, not a typical white-dwarf system. The sample of intact planets is small, and detection methods select for different kinds of objects: microlensing can reveal a distant planet, while a transit is detectable when an orbit happens to cross our line of sight. Current observations do not justify one standard layout for planetary systems around white dwarfs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could a planet around a white dwarf support life?
It is a theoretical possibility, not an observed result. Because a white dwarf is faint, its habitable zone—the range of distances where surface temperatures could allow liquid water—is very close to the star and shifts as the remnant cools. NASA emphasizes that being in a habitable zone does not guarantee a habitable world or life (NASA’s habitable-zone explanation).

A 2024 preprint modeled a hypothetical Earth-like planet around a typical 0.6-solar-mass white dwarf at about 0.012 AU. The authors estimated that it could spend nearly seven billion years in the evolving habitable zone and examined light conditions relevant to photosynthesis and prebiotic chemistry. These are model results; the study does not establish that such a planet exists or hosts life. Read Whyte et al.’s preprint.
